The first changes how you access the same on-chain accounts; the second is a true key rotation that requires transactions and fees. You usually need key rotation only when your old recovery method may be exposed, unauthorized activity appears, or you deliberately want new keys.
What “wallet migration” actually means
A crypto wallet is primarily a key-management tool. Your coins, tokens and NFTs remain recorded on blockchains; the wallet app stores or accesses the keys that authorize transactions. That is why changing phones or reinstalling an app does not automatically move anything on-chain.

In practice, “migration” describes two separate operations:
| Operation | What changes | What happens on-chain | Typical reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| Restore or import existing keys | The app or interface used to reach your accounts | Nothing moves and addresses remain the same | New phone, reinstall, or switching to a compatible wallet interface |
| Move assets to fresh keys | The controlling recovery phrase, private keys and destination addresses | Assets are sent in blockchain transactions | Suspected exposure, unauthorized transactions, or intentional key rotation |
Confusing these operations causes avoidable risk. Importing a recovery phrase into another wallet does not make the phrase safer; it only gives another interface access to the same accounts. Conversely, creating a new wallet without transferring every relevant holding leaves assets and permissions under the old keys.

When you do not need new keys
A new phone or a reinstalled app
If your recovery phrase or other approved recovery method is still private and usable, install the wallet software from its legitimate source and restore the existing wallet. The same accounts should reappear when the software uses the same account standard and derivation path. Your phone has changed, but the blockchain addresses have not.
A device change alone is not evidence that the keys were compromised. Do not “migrate” to fresh addresses merely because a handset was lost if the recovery phrase was never stored on that handset or exposed to anyone else. Instead, restore the wallet on a trusted device and review account activity.
Changing wallet applications
A different app can often import the same phrase, but compatibility is not automatic. Check support for the chains you use, the account type, and the derivation paths that generated your addresses. MetaMask’s documentation, for example, describes phrase import using the default BIP-44 path; accounts created with another path may not appear until the correct path or account is added.
One phrase also does not guarantee that every account will be displayed immediately. Separately imported private-key accounts, hardware-wallet accounts and accounts restored from another phrase may need to be added again from the new interface. Record those accounts before abandoning the old app.
When a fresh-key migration is necessary
Your recovery phrase or private key may have been exposed
Exposure includes typing a phrase into a website, storing it in a cloud-synced note, sending it by email or support chat, photographing it, or entering it after following an unsolicited “support” instruction. Treat any request for a recovery phrase as a theft attempt. MetaMask’s official warning states: “Never share your SRP or private keys with anyone — not even the MetaMask team, even though we will never ask you for this information.” Ethereum.org is equally direct: “Never, for any reason, share your recovery phrase or private keys!”
If exposure is plausible, restoring the old phrase in another app does not solve the problem. An attacker who has the phrase can use it independently. Create a new wallet with an unrelated recovery method and transfer holdings to addresses from that wallet.
Unauthorized transactions appear
An outgoing transaction you did not approve is a practical sign that the old key, a connected account or a contract permission may no longer be trustworthy. Preserve the transaction details, stop using the affected account for new deposits, and prioritize moving assets that can still be transferred. Fresh keys are required for a true change of control; reinstalling the old wallet software is not.

You intentionally want key rotation
Some owners rotate keys as part of an internal security policy, after a change in custody arrangements, or when separating personal and organizational holdings. The reason can be legitimate even when there is no known compromise. The operational work is the same: establish independent fresh keys, inventory every holding and permission, then transfer or otherwise migrate each item that can be moved.
Decision guide: choose the right operation
| Your situation | Correct action | On-chain transfer required? | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| New phone, phrase securely backed up | Restore the existing wallet | No | Use the official app and keep the phrase private |
| New wallet interface, same secure phrase | Import the phrase and re-add missing accounts | No | Check chains and derivation paths |
| Phrase entered on a suspicious site or shared | Create fresh keys and transfer assets | Yes | Never enter the old phrase again |
| Unauthorized outgoing transaction | Contain the account and rotate keys | Yes, for transferable holdings | Move priority assets before investigating less urgent items |
| Cannot log in to an exchange | Use the exchange’s official account-recovery channel | Not necessarily | Custodial recovery is different from self-custody recovery |
Restoring the same wallet on a new device or app
This procedure changes access software, not the addresses that own your assets.
- Obtain the software safely. Use the wallet provider’s verified distribution channel. Avoid links delivered in unsolicited messages, pop-ups or search advertisements that imitate support.
- Choose restore or import. Select the option for an existing recovery phrase or provider-supported recovery method. Do not create a new wallet if your goal is to see the old addresses.
- Enter credentials only in the trusted wallet application. Never paste the phrase into a browser form, online “synchronization” page, email or chat. A legitimate support representative does not need it.
- Check the first account address. Compare it with a known address from your records. A different address usually indicates a different phrase, account type or derivation path rather than a missing blockchain balance.
- Re-add networks and accounts. Select the relevant networks, then manually add separately imported private-key accounts and hardware accounts if the interface does not show them automatically.
- Verify balances and history. Use the correct network and account view. Assets may appear absent simply because the app has not selected the chain or account where they reside.
If expected accounts remain missing, stop guessing phrases. Confirm which derivation path and account standard the original wallet used, and check whether the new wallet supports that path. Some smart-contract wallet designs have narrower recovery and network support than ordinary externally controlled accounts.
How to migrate to fresh keys safely
1. Create the destination wallet independently
Use a separate, trusted installation and generate a new recovery method. Write the recovery phrase on a durable offline medium and store it where unauthorized people and fire or water damage are unlikely to reach it. Do not put it in a cloud drive, password-sharing service, email, screenshot or support conversation. Verify the destination address through a trusted channel before sending anything.
2. Build a complete inventory
Visible token balances are only part of the job. List holdings on every relevant chain, including:
- Native coins needed for transaction fees
- Fungible tokens and stablecoins
- NFTs and other collectibles
- Liquidity-provider or other decentralized-finance positions
- Smart-contract ownership, administrator roles and permissioned accounts
- Locked, vested or time-delayed positions
Some positions cannot be sent with a normal token transfer. A liquidity position may need to be exited first; a lockup may prevent movement until its release condition; a contract role may require a specific ownership-transfer function. Identify those rules before treating the inventory as complete.
3. Confirm network and asset compatibility
A recovery phrase does not make all networks interchangeable. Bitcoin uses separate network rules and address formats from Ethereum-style networks. EVM-compatible chains can often use the same account keys in appropriate wallet software, but that does not mean every app supports every chain or asset. Smart-contract wallets can have a narrower supported scope.

For each holding, confirm the destination wallet supports the exact network and asset type. Sending an asset through the wrong network can make recovery difficult or impossible. When support is unclear, consult the current wallet documentation and perform no transfer until the destination format is confirmed.

4. Plan fees and transaction order
Every blockchain transfer consumes fees, and moving many assets can produce many separate charges. Reserve the network’s native coin in the old account for required transactions, and prioritize high-value or time-sensitive holdings. Do not assume that a token balance alone can pay its own transfer fee.
5. Verify, test and transfer
Copying an address is not enough. Compare the destination address on the sending screen with the address displayed by the trusted destination wallet. When practical, send a small test amount first, confirm it arrived on the intended network and account, then continue with the remaining transfers. This is a cautious operating practice, not a guarantee against every contract or network error.
Transfer ordinary tokens, NFTs and other movable assets in an order that preserves enough fee currency for later transactions. Handle locked positions and contract ownership according to their specific rules rather than sending a transaction that the contract cannot accept.
6. Confirm the destination and keep records
After each transaction confirms, check the destination account and network. Record transaction identifiers, amounts, source addresses and destination addresses. Reconcile the inventory only after balances, NFTs, positions and contract roles are visible at the new wallet. Imported private-key accounts and separate hardware accounts may still require manual addition in the interface.
Hardware wallets and migration
A hardware wallet is a physical option for keeping private keys offline. It can be useful when you want fresh keys with an offline signing device, but it is not itself a migration. The keys become new only when the device generates a new recovery method and you send assets to its new addresses.
Moving an existing phrase into a hardware device may preserve the same keys rather than rotate them, and importing an old compromised phrase would preserve the compromise. For a suspected exposure, generate a new recovery method on the trusted device and transfer assets to the resulting addresses.

Before choosing any hardware product, check current support for your chains, assets, account types, recovery process and transaction workflow. No device should be assumed to support every asset in a portfolio without verifying those details.
Common failure modes and fixes
“My balance disappeared after importing the phrase.”
First select the correct network and account. Then check whether the original account used a non-default derivation path or was separately imported by private key. Add that account manually if the new app supports it. A phrase import can succeed while displaying only the first default account.

“The new wallet shows the address but not my NFT or position.”
Confirm that the wallet supports the relevant chain and asset type. Some smart-contract positions are not represented as ordinary token balances and may require the originating application or a contract-specific view. A locked position may still be present but not transferable.
“I sent funds but they are not visible.”
Check the transaction status, destination address and network separately. Sending on a network the destination wallet does not support can prevent normal display even when the transaction confirmed. Do not send a second payment until the first transaction’s network and recipient have been verified.
“Support asked for my phrase to complete the migration.”
Stop the conversation. Do not disclose the phrase or private key. Use only the provider’s official support route, and describe the problem without revealing secrets. A support process that requires your recovery phrase is not a safe recovery process.
Self-custody migration versus exchange account recovery
With a self-custody wallet, whoever controls the recovery phrase controls the signing keys. With a custodial exchange, the platform controls the wallets and you authenticate to an account. A forgotten exchange password, identity check or suspended login must be handled through that exchange’s official recovery channel; importing a self-custody phrase will not restore an exchange balance.
Quick Recap
A practical final checklist
- Have you identified whether you are restoring the same keys or rotating to fresh keys?
- Is the recovery method private, offline and backed up before you begin?
- Have you listed every chain, token, NFT, liquidity position, lockup and contract role?
- Does the destination support each exact network and asset?
- Have you reserved enough native currency for fees?
- Did you verify the destination address through a trusted channel?
- Did you record transaction identifiers and confirm each destination balance?
- Have you manually re-added separately imported and hardware accounts?
- If an exchange login is the problem, are you using the exchange’s official recovery process instead of a wallet import?
