Buy now if you have a game you want to play, a library or friend group that favors one platform, or a genuine local discount. Wait if your current console works, you have no immediate must-play title, and you are comfortable with an open-ended timeline. Microsoft has announced Project Helix and says developer alpha hardware is planned to ship beginning in 2027, but it has not announced a consumer launch date or price. Sony has not provided a cited PS6 date or price. That makes “wait for next generation” a decision under uncertainty rather than a short countdown.

The practical choice in 2026 is therefore between the games, library support, media format and price you can use now, versus preserving your money until Microsoft publishes consumer details. The sections below give you a way to make that choice without assuming that one console is universally better.

The short decision

Your situation Best course Why
Your current console is broken or cannot run a game you want now Buy the platform that supports that game and your preferred way to play Project Helix has no consumer date or price, so waiting has no defined end point.
You have a working console and no specific near-term game Wait, or buy only if a substantial local discount appears You can keep playing while Microsoft reveals more about Project Helix and Sony’s next-generation plans.
You own many PS4 games Favor PS5, after checking the individual titles Sony says PS5 supports more than 8,500 PS4 games, although compatibility is title-specific.
You rely on Xbox purchases, Xbox Play Anywhere or a four-generation library Favor Xbox, after verifying each entitlement Microsoft says Project Helix is intended to play Xbox console and PC games and that it is committed to keeping four Xbox generations playable for years.
You need physical games, lending or resale Assess a PS5 with a disc drive carefully Sony says newly released PlayStation games will be digital-only from January 2028; discs for games released before then remain playable on the disc-drive console.

Do not treat the table as a permanent ranking. Confirm the platform and release status of the particular games you care about, then compare delivered prices in your country.

What “wait for the next generation” actually means

Project Helix has a developer milestone, not a retail launch

In a March 2026 Xbox Wire announcement summarizing a March 11 GDC keynote, Microsoft said, “we plan to ship alpha versions of the hardware to developers beginning in 2027.” “Alpha” and “to developers” are the important qualifications. The statement does not announce a consumer model, retail launch window, final specifications, price or preorder date.

#1 Best Overall
PlayStation®5 Digital Edition (slim)
  • Model Number CFI-2000
  • Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
  • Vertical Stand sold seperately

Developer hardware can be revised, delayed or followed by a long certification and software period. It is not evidence that a consumer Xbox successor will be available in 2027, and it should not be used to predict a holiday launch. If you wait, you are waiting for additional announcements rather than for a known date.

There is no comparable PS6 timetable in the cited information

Sony has not supplied a PS6 release date or price in the information available for this decision. A rumor, analyst estimate or retailer placeholder is not a purchasing schedule. You can monitor official announcements, but do not value a current PS5 on the assumption that a PS6 is arriving soon.

What waiting costs you

  • You postpone access to current games and any friends who already play on a platform.
  • Your existing television, storage, controller and subscription plans may sit unused or continue costing money.
  • Retail prices can rise, fall or change by region while you wait.
  • A future console may launch at a premium, have limited stock or require new accessories.

Waiting is most rational when the opportunity cost is low: your current system works, your backlog is large and no announced game is a personal priority.

Current 2026 prices change the buy-now calculation

Launch-era comparisons are stale. The following are U.S. figures and have different evidentiary status; local prices, taxes, bundles and promotions can differ.

Model Price and effective date How to interpret it
PS5 with disc drive $649.99 recommended retail price, effective April 2, 2026 Sony Interactive Entertainment’s U.S. recommended price; retailer pricing may differ.
PS5 Digital Edition $599.99 recommended retail price, effective April 2, 2026 Lower than the disc model by $50 at the stated recommendation, but it cannot use game discs.
PS5 Pro $899.99 recommended retail price, effective April 2, 2026 A premium PS5 configuration; compare its actual benefits for your display and games rather than treating it as the standard PS5.
Xbox Series X disc model $799.99, effective August 1, 2026 Windows Central reported this U.S. price change; verify current retailer prices because the figure is secondary reporting.
Xbox Series X Digital $749.99, effective August 1, 2026 Also reported by Windows Central; confirm whether the listing, stock and included accessories match the advertised model.

These prices put the standard Xbox Series X above the recommended PS5 prices in the cited U.S. figures, but the comparison is not automatically fair. A disc drive, bundled game, controller, storage capacity, warranty and retailer discount can change the delivered total. Check live local listings on the day you buy rather than relying on a launch price or an old comparison article.

Choose based on the games you will actually play

Start with a confirmed-platform list

  1. Write down the three to five games you expect to play in the next 12 months.
  2. For each title, check the publisher’s current platform list and release status in your region.
  3. Mark whether you need a specific edition, early-access period, cross-save feature or online multiplayer service.
  4. Remove games that are only rumors or have no confirmed date.

Microsoft’s January 2026 announcement demonstrates why the last step matters. It lists Fable for Xbox Series X|S and PS5, among other platforms, and says Forza Horizon 6 is coming to Xbox with a PS5 release planned later. An Xbox-associated game is not automatically an Xbox exclusive. Availability can also vary by launch date, region and edition, so verify the current store page before paying.

Account for friends and multiplayer

If your regular group already plays on one network, that can outweigh a modest hardware-price difference. Confirm cross-play for the exact game; “cross-platform” is not universal across every mode or generation. Sony says a paid PlayStation Plus plan is required for online multiplayer on PS5. Microsoft’s cited game announcement names Game Pass Ultimate as a day-one option for certain announced titles, but subscription prices and terms change and are not included in the hardware figures above.

Library continuity can be worth more than a new-console specification

PS4 owners: check the title, not just the headline number

Sony’s current product information says PS5 supports more than 8,500 PS4 games. That is a substantial reason to stay with PlayStation if you have purchased PS4 games, but it is not a guarantee for every title. Check the individual game’s compatibility notice, save-transfer process, upgrade fee and whether your add-ons carry over. A physical PS4 copy generally requires a PS5 with a disc drive; a digital entitlement requires access to the account that bought it.

Xbox owners: verify entitlements and generation support

Microsoft describes Project Helix as intended to play Xbox console and PC games and says it is committed to keeping four Xbox generations playable for years. That is a continuity goal, not a promise that every game, accessory, save or disc will work in every future configuration. Confirm the exact title’s backward-compatibility status, whether your purchase is tied to your Microsoft account, and whether a disc license is needed.

Microsoft also reported more than 1,500 games in the Xbox Play Anywhere catalog in March 2026. That number refers only to Play Anywhere games, not the entire Xbox catalog. For a qualifying purchase, Play Anywhere can be useful when you move between a compatible Xbox console and Windows PC, but check the game’s listing rather than assuming every Xbox title qualifies.

Do not abandon a library without pricing its replacement

List the games you would have to repurchase, the value of add-ons and the time invested in saves or achievements. Then compare that cost with any hardware saving. A nominally cheaper console can be more expensive if it forces you to rebuild a large library.

Disc or digital: an important PS5 distinction

What Sony’s January 2028 policy says

In a July 1, 2026 announcement, Sony Interactive Entertainment Content Communications senior director Sid Shuman wrote that “physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028.” The stated policy concerns newly released games. Sony also says discs for games released before January 2028 remain playable on the cited disc-drive PS5.

That does not mean existing discs suddenly stop working in 2028. It does mean a disc-drive PS5’s future value is different from its current resale advantages: it can play your existing and pre-January-2028 purchases, while new PlayStation releases after that point are expected to be digital-only under the announcement.

How the policy affects different buyers

  • Collectors: Buy a disc-drive model if preserving access to your existing collection matters, while recognizing that future new releases may not have a physical edition.
  • Borrowers and resellers: Physical discs released before the cutoff can still be lent or resold, subject to each game’s account and online requirements. Digital purchases generally cannot be transferred the same way.
  • Digital-only players: The PS5 Digital Edition may fit your habits, but compare the $50 stated U.S. difference with the option value of a drive.
  • PS4 disc owners: A digital-only PS5 cannot read your discs. Choose the disc-drive model if you want to continue using them.

Microsoft’s cited material does not establish an equivalent Xbox physical-release cutoff. Do not assume that one company’s policy automatically applies to the other.

Calculate the total cost of playing

Hardware is only the first line

For each candidate, add the console, tax and delivery, an extra controller if needed, a headset or other required accessory, games not covered by a subscription, and any storage expansion. A 1 TB PS5 disc-drive model is the configuration described on Sony’s cited product page. Xbox Series X|S storage expansion cards are plug-and-play according to Windows Central, but the current model, price, compatibility and stock must be verified before purchase.

Subscriptions and online play

Include at least 12 months of the online service you realistically need. Sony states that paid PlayStation Plus is required for PS5 online multiplayer. Microsoft lists Game Pass Ultimate as a day-one option for certain announced games; that does not establish a universal requirement or a current subscription price. Check the live terms, catalog rotation, cloud features and cancellation rules in your region.

Use a simple two-year comparison

  1. Record the cheapest legitimate delivered price for each console model you would actually buy.
  2. Add two years of the subscription tier required for your multiplayer and game-access plans.
  3. Add the price of storage only if your expected library will exceed the internal space.
  4. Add the replacement cost of any physical games you would lose access to by choosing a digital model or a different platform.
  5. Subtract the realistic value of bundled games or a trade-in; do not count an advertised bundle if you would not play the included titles.

This produces a personal cost rather than a misleading console-only ranking.

A step-by-step buy-now-or-wait method

  1. Test your current console. If it runs the games you want, connects reliably and has acceptable storage, waiting is feasible. If it is failing, include repair and downtime in the comparison.
  2. Set a deadline for waiting. Choose a date, such as the next major game you care about or a planned sale. Do not wait indefinitely based on a developer-only 2027 milestone.
  3. Make the game list. Confirm platforms, launch dates, multiplayer requirements and cross-save behavior from current publisher or store information.
  4. Audit your library. Check PS4 compatibility or Xbox backward compatibility title by title, including discs, digital licenses, saves and add-ons.
  5. Choose your media format. Decide whether lending, collecting and reselling justify a disc drive despite Sony’s announced shift for new releases after January 2028.
  6. Price the complete setup locally. Compare the exact model, controller count, storage, warranty, taxes, delivery and subscription—not just the headline console price.
  7. Check your friends’ platform. Verify cross-play for the games you actually play together.
  8. Buy only when the result is clear. If both platforms meet your needs and no game is urgent, retain your current system and wait for more official next-generation information.

When a PS5 is the better purchase

  • You own a large PS4 library and the specific games you care about are compatible.
  • You want Sony’s first-party releases that are confirmed for PS5 and not available on your current hardware.
  • You need a disc drive for existing PS4 or PS5 discs, lending or resale before the January 2028 policy takes effect.
  • Your friends use PlayStation and the games you play support the required online plan.
  • A local PS5 offer makes the total cost materially lower than the Xbox configuration you would otherwise buy.

The PS5 with disc drive is the more flexible physical-media choice among the cited PS5 models, but its value depends on how many discs you will actually use. The PS5 Digital Edition saves space and money only if your library and future buying habits are digital.

When an Xbox Series X is the better purchase

  • Your must-play list is strongest on Xbox, or you want Xbox and Windows continuity for qualifying Play Anywhere games.
  • Your purchased Xbox library, saves and achievements are more valuable to you than starting over elsewhere.
  • Your regular multiplayer group is on Xbox and the relevant games support your preferred cross-play arrangement.
  • You can buy the exact Series X model at a genuine local discount that offsets its higher cited U.S. price.
  • You want to play current Xbox games now and do not want to wait for an unpriced, undated consumer successor.

Do not buy on the assumption that every Microsoft-associated title is exclusive. Confirm each game’s current platforms and release timing.

Buying used or discounted hardware

A used or open-box console can change the arithmetic, but no general used-market price proves that it is a better deal. Evaluate the individual listing:

  • Compare the total delivered price with a new unit, including tax and shipping.
  • Check the exact model: disc or digital, storage size and regional variant.
  • Ask for the purchase date, remaining warranty and proof that the console is not account- or network-banned.
  • Confirm that the controller, power cable, stand and any advertised accessories are included.
  • Inspect the disc drive, ports, ventilation, fan noise and signs of liquid damage.
  • Prefer a return window or buyer protection long enough to test downloads, discs, Wi-Fi and controller drift.

Do not count an unusually cheap listing until you know its condition and warranty. A reliable discounted new console may be safer than a slightly cheaper unit with no return rights.

How to monitor the next-generation situation without overreacting

Follow official Xbox and PlayStation announcements for a consumer product name, launch region, price, backward-compatibility policy and required accessories. Treat developer alpha hardware as a development step. A future announcement may also introduce multiple models rather than a single replacement, so wait for the configuration that matches your display, disc habits and library.

Until those details exist, keep a current-console purchase tied to a present benefit: a game you will play, a library you can carry forward, a friend group you can join or a price you can verify. Do not pay a premium today merely to avoid missing an unspecified launch.

Final decision checklist

  • Can your current console comfortably cover the next game you care about?
  • Have you verified every must-play game’s platform and current release date?
  • Have you checked your purchased PS4 or Xbox titles individually?
  • Do you need a disc drive for existing games, lending or resale?
  • Have you included subscriptions, storage, tax, delivery and accessories?
  • Are you comparing current local prices rather than old launch prices?
  • Are you comfortable with an open-ended wait, since Project Helix has no consumer date or price?

If you answer “no” to the first question and “yes” to a specific platform after the remaining checks, buy that platform now. If your current console works and none of the games or library considerations is urgent, waiting is sensible—but set a personal review date instead of assuming a next-generation launch is imminent.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
