A crypto postage stamp is a real, physical postage stamp linked to a blockchain-based digital representation, usually an NFT or “digital twin.” The physical stamp may be valid for mailing under the issuing postal operator’s rules; the NFT is a separate digital collectible and is not, by itself, postage.

Enschedé defines one as “a physical postage stamp paired with a unique NFT on the blockchain, combining traditional philately with digital collecting.” In practical terms, it combines a physical stamp with a digital counterpart that can be collected and, depending on the issue, held or transferred online. That makes a crypto stamp different from an NFT-only image that resembles a stamp: the physical postage stamp is part of the concept. The digital token may be called a digital twin, but the exact link between the physical item and the token depends on the issuer’s design.

In one common arrangement, a digital image and an NFT correspond to a physical stamp. The NFT is a token recorded on a blockchain. A project may allow its owner to keep it in a compatible wallet or transfer it through supported platforms. Ciphers.me describes its own model as recording the token’s origin, authenticity, ownership, and transaction history on-chain; that description should not be assumed to apply identically to every stamp project. There is no single technical standard. An issue may use a wallet-held NFT, a QR code, an app, or a combination. For example, Liechtenstein’s official philatelic history describes its 2021 “Stamp 4.0” as having a secure QR code that can be scanned by smartphone, with an app for verification and assigning an owner through blockchain technology. Philately Liechtenstein’s history documents that issue.
Belgium’s bpost described its 2025 stamp as a physical stamp with holographic film and a unique NFT registered on Polygon. The digital twin could be kept, exchanged, or resold on dedicated platforms after transfer to a compatible wallet, according to the announcement. Can you use a crypto postage stamp to mail a letter?
Sometimes. Postal validity comes from the physical stamp and the terms set by the postal administration that issued it—not from the NFT alone. bpost described its 2025 issue as a classic postage stamp “used to frank your mail.” Gibraltar’s Philatelic Bureau described its 2021 cryptocurrency issue as a commemorative postage stamp with an NFT counterpart. These examples show that some crypto stamps are intended to serve as postage, but they do not establish postal validity for every NFT stamp project.

Before mailing an item, check the issuing operator’s instructions for the particular stamp. Confirm its denomination, territory, validity period, and any activation or redemption steps. Do not rely on a digital token or a project’s collectible description as proof that a physical item will be accepted as postage.

What should you check before buying or collecting one?
- Postal terms: Identify the issuing postal operator, denomination, territory, and validity rules. Confirm that the item is a postage stamp, rather than a digital collectible or presentation item without postal validity.
- Physical item: Check what is included and note any printing or security features, such as holographic film. A product listing may describe a pack or collectible rather than a stamp intended for use on mail.
- Digital setup: Find out whether the issue uses an NFT, QR code, app, or other method; which blockchain and wallet are required; and how the physical stamp is associated with its digital counterpart.
- Transfer support: Check whether the token can be transferred and which wallets or platforms support it. A blockchain record does not guarantee perpetual access to a particular app or marketplace.
- Edition and availability: Review the print run, rarity labels, claim deadlines, and whether the physical and digital parts can be separated. Confirm current stock and price with the seller or postal bureau; old launch announcements are not current offers.
For context, bpost announced that its 2025 crypto stamp went on sale on 18 September through its eShop and philatelic channels, with a print run of 17,000. Its announced launch price was €9.36 each, or €9 per stamp when buying two or more. Those are historical launch details, not confirmation of present availability or pricing. They can appeal to both traditional stamp collectors and digital collectibles collectors. A limited print run or rarity category describes an issue’s collecting characteristics; it does not establish future resale value or investment returns. Blockchain records can document token activity, but they do not guarantee the physical stamp’s condition, its postal validity, or continued access to a wallet-compatible service.

Examples of official crypto stamp issues
- Austria: The official Crypto stamp site calls its issue the world’s first postage stamp with a digital twin on blockchain. That is the issuer’s own claim. The official site describes its collections.
- Belgium and partner postal operators: bpost’s 2025 announcement describes a physical stamp with holographic film and a unique Polygon NFT, alongside Österreichische Post, PostNL, POST Luxembourg, and Portugal’s CTT. See the announcement for details specific to that release.
- Gibraltar: The Philatelic Bureau’s 2021 commemorative issue paired a physical cryptocurrency postage stamp with an NFT collectible. It announced a 50,000-stamp series and a separate NFT release arrangement. The bureau’s issue page describes that release.
