A crypto soft fork is a change to a blockchain’s consensus rules that makes some blocks or transactions valid under the old rules invalid under the new ones. The new set of valid blocks is narrower, so nodes still using the old rules can generally accept blocks that follow the new rules—but they do not necessarily enforce the new restrictions or validate every new feature.
What is a soft fork?
A soft fork changes the consensus rules by tightening them. Anything invalid under the old rules remains invalid, while some things that were previously valid become invalid under the updated rules. In set terms, the new rules’ valid set is a subset of the old rules’ valid set.

The Bitcoin Developer Documentation glossary defines it this way: “A softfork is a change to the bitcoin protocol wherein only previously valid blocks/transactions are made invalid. Since old nodes will recognise the new blocks as valid, a softfork is backward-compatible.” Bitcoin Developer Documentation glossary.

How is a soft fork different from a hard fork?
The key difference is the direction in which the rules change. A soft fork narrows what is valid; a hard fork makes at least some previously invalid blocks or transactions valid. Bitcoin Core describes this valid-set distinction in its Segregated Witness overview, and the Bitcoin Improvement Proposal taxonomy frames it at the consensus layer in BIP 123.

| Question | Soft fork | Hard fork |
|---|---|---|
| What happens to the valid set? | It narrows: some previously valid blocks or transactions become invalid. | It expands in at least one respect: something previously invalid becomes valid. |
| What can a non-upgraded node do? | It can generally accept blocks produced under the tighter rules. | It can reject blocks that rely on the new rules. |
| Does compatibility mean old nodes enforce the change? | No. They may accept the chain without applying the new restrictions. | No. A node that does not adopt the new rules may remain incompatible with the new-rule chain. |
| Can chains diverge? | Possible, depending on adoption and rule enforcement; the definition itself is the tightening of rules. | Possible if nodes follow incompatible rules, potentially producing a persistent split. |
A “fork” can also mean a temporary split in the block chain when competing blocks are found under the same consensus rules. That is not necessarily a protocol-rule change. The Bitcoin developer guide discusses this distinction alongside soft forks.
Do old nodes accept a soft fork?
Usually, old nodes can accept blocks that comply with the new, stricter rules, which is why a soft fork is called backward-compatible. But accepting a block is not the same as independently checking every new rule. An older node does not automatically gain the upgraded software’s understanding of new data or restrictions.

Bitcoin’s Segregated Witness (SegWit) illustrates the limitation. BIP 141 identifies SegWit as a deployed Bitcoin consensus soft fork and explains that witness data is committed through the existing block structure. Non-upgraded nodes do not see or validate that witness data and treat witness programs as anyone-can-spend scripts; upgraded nodes apply the intended rules. In practice, an old node may follow the same chain while offering weaker validation assurances for the feature. See BIP 141.
How are soft forks activated?
Activation is specific to the network and proposal; there is no universal threshold or method. Bitcoin’s developer guide describes two approaches:
