A compatible wallet can read it and fill in payment details, but the code does not prove who controls the destination or whether a payment request is legitimate. Check the asset, network, recipient and amount in your wallet before approving a transaction.
What information does a crypto QR code contain?
At its simplest, a QR code contains a wallet address. Scanning it with a compatible wallet can populate the recipient field so you do not have to type a long string of characters. The FBI describes QR codes as square barcodes that a smartphone camera can scan and read; in crypto-payment scams, a code can also direct a payment to an unintended recipient. Some codes encode a payment URI rather than just an address. Bitcoin’s BIP 321 describes a URI format that can include an address and optional information such as an amount, label or message. That is a Bitcoin-specific example, not a universal format: payloads and supported fields vary by asset and wallet. Bitcoin BIP 321
How does scanning one work?
- The recipient displays a receive code. A wallet or exchange may show a QR code associated with a receiving address. For example, Coinbase’s documented flow asks the user to select an asset and, where applicable, a network before displaying the receive address and QR code. Its interface is one provider’s example, not a standard for every wallet. Coinbase Help
- The sender scans it in a compatible wallet. The wallet reads the encoded data and may fill in a recipient address and any supported payment fields. Bitcoin.org describes displaying a wallet’s receive QR code for another person to scan; Bitcoin developer documentation likewise describes QR scanning as a way to pre-fill mobile Bitcoin payment screens. - The sender checks the payment screen. Review the recipient, asset, network and amount shown in the wallet, then approve only if they match the intended payment. Scanning supplies data; it does not authenticate the person or organization that provided the code.
What should you check before sending?
- Asset and network: Make sure the selected cryptocurrency and network match the recipient’s instructions. A provider may offer multiple addresses or network choices for an asset; Coinbase’s receive flow illustrates why selecting the right one matters. Coinbase Help
- Recipient and amount: Check the details that the wallet populated before confirming. If anything differs from what you intended, stop and verify through a trusted channel.
- Who supplied the code: A QR code is a data carrier, not proof that a payment demand is genuine. Do not scan and pay just because a message, call or webpage creates urgency.
- Whether the code is reusable: Bitcoin’s BIP 321 discusses on-chain address instructions as one-time payment instructions and says best practice is to use a unique address for each on-chain transaction. Other payment instructions may behave differently, and other cryptocurrencies need not use Bitcoin’s URI format. Follow the wallet’s current guidance for the specific asset. Bitcoin BIP 321
When is a crypto QR code a scam warning?
Be suspicious of an unexpected request to buy cryptocurrency and scan a supplied code to pay a supposed government agency, business or other authority. The US Federal Trade Commission warns that legitimate businesses and government agencies do not demand cryptocurrency payment through email, text or social-media messages. FTC Consumer Advice

The FBI also cautions against following instructions from a stranger to scan a QR code and send cryptocurrency at a physical crypto ATM. Treat pressure, secrecy or a demand to act immediately as reasons to pause and verify independently. FBI IC3
Is a crypto QR code the same as a private key?
No. In the payment flows described here, a code carries an address or payment information so a wallet can prepare a transaction. It should not be treated as a private key or recovery phrase. The precise contents depend on the wallet and the code, so follow the wallet provider’s instructions and never assume that every crypto-related QR code is safe to share or scan.

What varies between wallets and cryptocurrencies?
QR behavior is not identical across all assets. The payload format, network choices, supported payment fields and the details shown for confirmation depend on the cryptocurrency and wallet. Bitcoin BIP 321 explains Bitcoin-specific URI behavior, while Coinbase’s receive instructions show one provider’s asset-and-network selection flow. For a particular transaction, use the wallet’s current documentation rather than assuming another asset or wallet works the same way.
