On a new iPhone 18 Pro running iOS 27, the first settings worth reviewing sit in three places: Battery, Camera, and Privacy & Security. Go through them in that order, but treat each toggle as a choice based on how you use the phone, not a default every owner should copy. The one change with a clear trade-off is whether the Camera app records location in your photos, and that is covered in the Privacy & Security section below.
Before you start, confirm you are on iOS 27 by opening Settings > General > Software Update. Menu labels can change between software versions, so if a name below does not match your screen, check the label on your installed version.

1. Battery: see what is using power, then choose a charging style
Open Settings > Battery. Apple’s iOS 27 user guide lists the controls in this area as battery percentage, usage by app, Power Mode, Charge Limit, Optimized Battery Charging, and Clean Energy Charging. Start with usage by app. Use the phone normally for a few days before changing anything, because that list shows which apps actually drain the battery in your routine.
Apple documents these charging and power controls, but it does not name one setting that suits everyone. Use the table below to match each control to your habits.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
| Control | What it does | Consider it if |
|---|---|---|
| Power Mode | Reduces some performance to extend battery life when you need it to. | You regularly run low before the end of the day and can accept slower performance at times. |
| Charge Limit | Caps how far the battery charges. | You rarely need a full charge and want to limit time spent at 100 percent. |
| Optimized Battery Charging | Learns your charging routine and holds the battery near 80 percent until you usually need it to finish charging. | You charge overnight on a predictable schedule. Leave it off if you often need a full charge at unpredictable times. |
| Clean Energy Charging | Adjusts charging toward times when the local grid is cleaner, where that information is available. | You want lower-carbon charging and accept that charging may pause at times. |
Charging and battery figures from Apple
Apple’s published test figures are useful for comparison, but they describe Apple’s test conditions, not what every charger or day of use will produce.
| Claim | Apple’s figure | Conditions stated |
|---|---|---|
| Cable charging | Up to 50 percent in around 15 minutes | Apple test claim using preproduction units and software. Results depend on your charger, cable, and battery condition. |
| Wireless charging | Up to 50 percent in 30 minutes | Apple test claim using preproduction units and software. The test setup used a MagSafe Charger. |
| Video playback, eSIM-only iPhone 18 Pro | Up to 36 hours | Apple claim from its announcement. Not an independent test. |
A MagSafe charger is an optional accessory if you want to charge wirelessly. None of the settings in this guide require one.
2. Camera: check formats, then decide whether to use Pro controls
Open Settings > Camera and review the photo and video format, the resolution, and the grid, which Apple groups with other camera options in its user guide. Format and resolution choices change file size and how quickly storage fills. Grid only changes what you see on screen while framing a shot.
Variable aperture on the 48MP Fusion Main camera
Apple identifies the iPhone 18 Pro’s main camera as a 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture. Apple says the aperture can adjust automatically for depth of field and lighting. If you are happy with how your photos look, leave that automatic behavior in place and skip the rest of this section.

Pro controls in the Camera app
For photographers who want to adjust the image themselves, Apple says the Camera app’s Pro controls allow:
- Manual aperture adjustment
- Shutter speed adjustment
- White balance adjustment
- Histogram viewing
A sensible approach is to leave everything automatic at first, then try manual controls on a few subjects you know well and compare the results. This guidance reflects Apple’s documented feature set. It is not based on hands-on testing.
Apple’s Greg Joswiak, senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, described the camera in its September 9, 2026 announcement this way: “iPhone 18 Pro makes it easy for anyone to capture stunning photos and videos using variable aperture, while providing more versatility for creators and more control for pros.”
3. Privacy & Security: app permissions, location, and tracking
Open Settings > Privacy & Security. Apple’s user guide groups app permissions, Location Services, and tracking here. Review them in that order, because each one covers a different kind of data.
Rank #3
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Remove location from Camera photos (if you want that)
This is the setting to change if you do not want the Camera app to add location information to the photos you take. Apple’s personal safety guide gives this route:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security.
- Tap Location Services.
- Scroll down and tap Camera.
- Select Never.
The trade-off is that photos taken with the Camera app will not include location information. If you rely on Photos to sort pictures by place, or you want location attached when you share an image, keep Camera’s location setting as it is. This setting governs new captures. It does not remove location data from photos already in your library.
App permissions and tracking
Review the apps that have access to your photos, microphone, and other data. Remove access from apps you no longer use. If you do not want apps asking to track your activity across other companies’ apps and websites, open the Tracking section under Privacy & Security and check the request setting, which is labeled Allow Apps to Request to Track on current versions.

Features to check before you rely on them
- Apple Reference Image is opt-in. At launch, capturing reference images is unavailable in the EU and China. Apple says users in the EU can develop and view reference images on supported OS versions.
- SynthID support is planned for a later software update, according to Apple’s announcement.
Because these items depend on region and software release timing, confirm their status on your device before you build a workflow around them.
What this guide does and does not establish
The battery, camera, and privacy controls described here are documented in Apple’s announcement and iOS 27 user guide, as checked in early October 2026. Apple’s documentation lists these options but does not prescribe a required order or a single best configuration. The battery and charging figures are Apple’s own test claims. This guide does not include independent battery or camera measurements, or hands-on testing of the Pro controls.
