A crypto gaming chain is a blockchain network or scaling layer designed, positioned, or used to support blockchain games. It describes the infrastructure a game uses—not how much of that game runs on-chain. The phrase is informal, not a defined technical standard.
What does “crypto gaming chain” mean?
The term refers to blockchain infrastructure intended to support games. Depending on the network, that can mean focusing on transaction fees, confirmation speed, game-related activity, digital-asset settlement, or tools for developers. Those are possible design goals, not guaranteed features of every gaming chain.

Ethereum.org explains that layer 2 networks can offer faster confirmations and lower fees than the base network. Immutable, for example, describes its chain as a layer 2 built for games and lists game-engine SDKs and gas-free transactions for players. Those are project descriptions, not a universal definition or independent performance assessment.

Is a blockchain game the same as a fully on-chain game?
No. A blockchain game may use blockchain for selected features—such as assets or currencies—while keeping gameplay and other systems on conventional servers. Chainlink uses “blockchain game” broadly for games that use blockchain technology to enhance or rework traditional video games.

A fully on-chain game is a narrower category: its game logic and state are stored on-chain. Ethereum.org describes a spectrum from games that use blockchain for specific features to games whose entire world lives on-chain. A game can use a gaming-focused chain without putting its core gameplay on-chain.
What might a gaming-focused chain provide?
- Transaction capacity or speed: A network may aim to handle frequent game actions or provide faster confirmations. Check which network or layer does the execution and settlement.
- Lower or simpler fees: Some designs aim to reduce transaction costs, or a game may sponsor fees so players do not pay them directly. Verify the details for the specific game and chain.
- Asset settlement: Blockchain transactions can record ownership or transfers of digital assets, although the game’s rules and other state may remain off-chain.
- Developer tooling: SDKs, frameworks, and game-engine integrations can help developers connect games to blockchain infrastructure.
For example, Immutable lists Unity and Unreal SDKs and gas-free player transactions. Sonic describes its network as an SVM chain designed for game economies and says its HyperGrid framework lets games operate in dedicated grids. These are vendor descriptions; Sonic’s performance statements have not been independently verified here.

Examples of networks described for gaming
- Immutable Chain: Immutable describes it as a layer-2 blockchain purpose-built for games. Its listed features include Unity and Unreal SDKs and gas-free transactions for players.
- Ronin: Ronin’s documentation describes it as an Ethereum layer 2 for gamified experiences and real-world crypto adoption. The documentation says RON is used for staking and gas fees.
- Sonic: Sonic’s documentation describes an SVM chain designed for game economies and a HyperGrid framework for dedicated game grids. Its performance claims are the project’s own, rather than independent measurements.
These examples use different architectures and product designs. Their descriptions do not establish a ranking, nor do they amount to an independent assessment of security, uptime, decentralization, or adoption.
How to evaluate a crypto gaming chain
When deciding what a chain means for a particular game, look beyond its “gaming” label and check:

- POWERHOUSE 8-CORE GAMING PERFORMANCE — Driven by the AMD Ryzen 7 8700F with 8 cores and 16 threads, boosting up to 5.0 GHz for smooth, responsive gameplay and the ability to handle AAA titles, streaming, and background tasks all at once
- NEXT-GEN BLACKWELL ARCHITECTURE — The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 is powered by NVIDIA's cutting-edge Blackwell GPU architecture, delivering a massive generational leap in rasterization and ray tracing performance so you can experience your games the way they were meant to be played.
- Simplistic Design: Enjoy the latest generation of Windows 11 Home for your everyday needs. *MSI recommends Windows 11 Pro for business use.
- Cool While Gaming: In conjunction with an ARGB fan Air Cooler, the Codex R2 features four system cooling fans; three in the front and one in the rear to pull in cool air and push heat out of the PC.
- Turn on the Bright Lights: With the built-in RGB lighting, take your gaming experience to the next level by pressing the MSI LED button to cycle through lighting options. Customize lighting even further with MSI Center software.
- What is on-chain? Find out whether the chain records assets only, selected game actions and state, or the core rules and state of the game.
- How does it execute and settle transactions? Identify whether the network is a layer 1, layer 2, sidechain, or application-specific environment, and what underlying network it depends on.
- What does the player experience involve? Check transaction fees, confirmation behavior, wallet requirements, and how much blockchain activity players encounter.
- What tools do developers get? Look for game-engine SDKs, frameworks, and deployment or integration tooling relevant to the game.
- Who is making performance claims? Treat official feature descriptions as claims by the project. Look for independent, clearly dated measurements before relying on speed or scale comparisons.
Do you need a crypto wallet to play?
It depends on the game. Some games require a wallet for asset ownership or login; others may hide or simplify blockchain interactions. A wallet requirement does not mean you need a physical hardware wallet. Check the game’s own setup instructions before connecting a wallet or signing transactions.
