What Is a Cloud Identity Platform? SSO, MFA, and Lifecycle Management Explained

A cloud identity platform centralizes authentication and access management. Learn how SSO, MFA, and lifecycle provisioning work together—and where they differ.

A cloud identity platform is a cloud service that helps an organization manage digital identities and control access to connected applications. It can authenticate users as an identity provider (IdP), apply sign-in policies, and coordinate identity records across systems. Its key functions are related but distinct: single sign-on (SSO) handles sign-in to configured apps, multi-factor authentication (MFA) strengthens the proof a user presents, and lifecycle management creates, updates, or removes accounts as people and roles change.

How a cloud identity platform fits into an organization

A typical setup starts with an authoritative source of identity information, such as an HR system or directory. The platform uses that information to authenticate a person and apply access policies. It can connect cloud-only environments as well as hybrid environments that include on-premises systems; Microsoft documents both deployment patterns in its identity deployment guidance.

When an application is configured to trust the identity provider, the platform can handle sign-in for that app. Separately, provisioning sends account information—such as a username, email address, or group membership—to the application. That distinction matters: a person can have an account provisioned in an app without SSO being configured, and SSO by itself does not necessarily create or remove the app’s local account.

How SSO works

Single sign-on lets a user authenticate through an identity provider and then access applications configured to trust it, without entering separate credentials for each app during that sign-in experience. The provider authenticates the user; the application accepts a configured sign-in response or assertion from that provider.

SSO can reduce sign-in friction and gives administrators a central place to apply authentication policies. It does not automatically cover every application: each app needs a supported integration path and correct configuration. SAML is one federation approach used in real deployments. Other protocols may also be available, but support depends on the provider and application.

For a concrete example, Google’s guide to connecting Microsoft Entra with Google Cloud Identity or Google Workspace treats user provisioning and SAML sign-in as separate tasks: administrators provision accounts, then configure a SAML profile and an Entra enterprise application for SSO. The guide was last reviewed on 2026-03-06 and describes that specific integration, not a universal setup recipe: Google Cloud Architecture Center guide.

What MFA adds

Multi-factor authentication requires more than one authentication factor for a sign-in. The aim is to make a stolen or guessed password alone insufficient. Which methods to require is a policy decision shaped by risk, user needs, and the platform’s capabilities.

Microsoft’s identity maturity guidance recommends phishing-resistant methods, including FIDO2 passkeys, physical security keys, and certificate-based authentication. A FIDO2 security key is an optional device, not a universal requirement. Its use depends on provider support, account configuration, user needs, and organizational policy. Check compatibility before selecting a key or setting a policy: Microsoft identity maturity guidance.

Identity lifecycle management and SCIM provisioning

Identity lifecycle management keeps user accounts and related access aligned with changes in a person’s status or role. It includes creating identities, maintaining them as attributes or roles change, and removing them when access is no longer appropriate. Automating those steps can reduce manual account work, but the organization still needs to decide which identity source and rules are authoritative.

SCIM, or System for Cross-domain Identity Management, is an open standard for exchanging identity information between domains and IT systems. Microsoft describes common /Users and /Groups endpoints, REST operations for creating, updating, and deleting objects, and commonly used fields such as usernames, names, email addresses, and group names. Microsoft Entra uses SCIM 2.0 for supported integrations to provision or deprovision users and groups.

SCIM reduces the need for a proprietary account-management integration when both sides support it, but it does not guarantee plug-and-play compatibility. The target app needs a supported endpoint or connector; administrators must supply valid authorization credentials and configure attribute mappings and provisioning scope. For some legacy systems, Microsoft documents an on-premises agent that can translate operations for other systems and connectors. See Microsoft’s automatic provisioning overview and SCIM synchronization with Microsoft Entra ID.

What to compare when evaluating platforms

Compare providers against the identity environment and applications you actually need to support. Capabilities, connectors, and licensing can vary by product and plan; verify current details with the vendor.

Evaluation area Questions to ask
Identity source and directory fit Can it work with your HR system, cloud directory, on-premises directory, or hybrid arrangement? Microsoft’s deployment guidance describes cloud-only and hybrid patterns.
Application coverage and federation Are the required applications supported through suitable connectors and sign-in protocols? Confirm each app’s integration and configuration requirements. Google’s specific Entra and Google integration example illustrates that SAML setup is distinct from provisioning.
MFA methods and policy Does the platform support and let administrators enforce the methods the organization requires, particularly phishing-resistant options? Microsoft’s identity guidance names FIDO2 passkeys, security keys, and certificate-based authentication.
Lifecycle automation Does the app support provisioning through SCIM or another suitable connector? Check group provisioning, attribute mappings, scope rules, and what happens when an account is deprovisioned. Microsoft’s provisioning overview and SCIM documentation describe these integration considerations.
Administration and operations What service credentials, delegated privileges, agents, attribute mappings, and operational ownership are required? Google’s integration guide calls out identity, group, and domain mapping decisions as well as provisioning-account privileges.
Licensing and deployment effort Confirm which application licenses and product plans are needed, and account for per-application provisioning setup. Microsoft notes that appropriate application licenses are required in its deployment guidance. Fees and entitlements vary; no universal price comparison applies.
