If condensation is on the outside, use the wipers and ease off the A/C instead. First identify which side is fogged; if you cannot see clearly, stop somewhere safe before adjusting controls.
Why car windows fog up in the rain
Fog is moisture that has condensed into tiny droplets on glass. Rainy weather can raise cabin moisture: wet clothes, umbrellas and passengers bring damp air and surfaces into the car. When that moist cabin air meets colder glass, condensation forms on the inside. NHTSA-hosted vehicle guidance describes this process and recommends clean interior glass, fresh air and a warmer defrost setting: NHTSA windshield-defogging guidance.

Fog can also form on the outside. In warm, humid conditions, the A/C may cool the windshield below the dew point of the outdoor air, so moisture condenses on the exterior. The right response depends on the side of the glass: heating and ventilating help interior fog, while reducing cooling can help exterior fog.
Clear fog from the inside
- Select front defrost or windshield defog. This directs air toward the windshield; the exact button or control varies by vehicle.
- Turn recirculation off. Fresh outside air helps carry cabin moisture away rather than repeatedly circulating it.
- Switch on the A/C if available. Air conditioning helps remove moisture from the air. Chevrolet Canada’s instruction is, “If defogging, turn the A/C to On.” Some vehicles manage this automatically.
- Use warm air and raise the fan speed while clearing. Aim airflow at the glass until visibility returns.
- After the glass clears, keep fresh air selected and leave airflow directed toward the windshield and floor at a comfortable warmer temperature.
Controls and automatic systems differ, so follow the owner’s manual if its instructions differ from these general steps. For example, Hyundai’s 2026 owner manual says its automatic defogging system selects A/C, fresh air, windshield defrost and maximum fan when it detects high cabin humidity; it also warns against manually selecting recirculation while that system is operating: Hyundai owner manuals.

Clear fog from the outside
Use the wipers to clear exterior condensation. If it returns, reduce or turn off the A/C and turn recirculation off so the windshield is not kept colder than the humid air outside. Nissan describes this as a warm-weather response; it is different from the steps for fog on the inside: Nissan windshield-defogging guidance.
Reduce recurring fog
- Keep the inside of the glass clean. A clean surface is part of the NHTSA-hosted defogging guidance: NHTSA windshield-defogging guidance.
- Limit cabin moisture. Remove wet umbrellas and other damp items when practical, and avoid leaving soaked clothing in the car.
- Use the rear-window defogger for the rear glass if your vehicle has one. Front defrost airflow may not clear the rear window; controls and equipment vary by vehicle.
- Keep ventilation settings suited to the conditions. For interior fog, use fresh air rather than recirculation and maintain airflow across the windshield.
Should you use an anti-fog product?
An interior car anti-fog treatment is optional; it does not replace the vehicle’s defrost and ventilation system. Rain-X describes its Anti-Fog treatment as an interior-glass product intended to help minimize fogging, including in cold or rainy weather. Follow the product label, and do not use that treatment on tinted windows, acrylic or plastic, according to the manufacturer: Rain-X FAQ.

Do not confuse interior anti-fog with an exterior rain-repellent coating: they are intended for different sides of the glass. Check the product’s surface compatibility and application directions before use. The available guidance does not establish an independent comparative test or guarantee that a treatment will prevent fog.
