It sets out who can participate, what each side is expected to do, and what resources or commercial benefits may be available.
What is a channel partner program?
The program is the vendor’s rules and operating structure for its partner relationships. A channel partner is the outside organization participating in that relationship; the channel partner program is the framework around it. TechTarget’s 2018 definition describes a partner program as a vendor business strategy for encouraging channel partners to recommend or sell its products and related services (TechTarget, August 16, 2018).

Partners can help a vendor reach customers or deliver work through their existing relationships, local knowledge, or specialist expertise. In return, a program may give partners access to vendor training, product information, support, and commercial opportunities. These are potential benefits, not guaranteed results; their value depends on the program’s terms and execution.

The partner mix depends on the vendor’s offering and route to market. Common examples include:
#1 Best Overall
- Resellers and value-added resellers (VARs): sell products, sometimes alongside integration or other services.
- Distributors: help make products available to other sellers or customers.
- Managed service providers (MSPs): provide ongoing services related to technology offerings.
- Systems integrators (SIs) and consultants: advise on, implement, or connect products with a customer’s systems.
- Independent software vendors (ISVs): develop software that may be sold alongside or integrated with another vendor’s offering.
Not every vendor works with all these partner types. The term “channel partner” refers broadly to an intermediary organization working with a producer to market, sell, or deliver its offering (TechTarget, September 4, 2025).
What does a channel partner program include?
Program details vary. Depending on the vendor, the framework may cover:
Rank #2
- Eligibility and enrollment: who may join and how to apply.
- Expectations and governance: partner and vendor responsibilities, performance expectations, and how the relationship is managed.
- Tiers and qualifications: levels of participation and the criteria for reaching or keeping them, if the vendor uses tiers.
- Commercial support: discounts, incentives, deal registration, or co-selling arrangements, where offered.
- Enablement: training, certifications, product information, and marketing resources.
- Operating tools and communication: partner portals, lead sharing, and processes for coordinating work.
These are possible components, not a universal checklist. A vendor may sell through partners, sell directly as well, or combine both approaches.

A marketplace can be one part of a partner strategy, but the terms are not interchangeable. For example, AWS describes its AWS Marketplace Channel as a way to simplify how AWS Partners work together to sell software (AWS Marketplace Channel). That named program illustrates one model; it does not mean every channel partner program operates through a marketplace.

What should you check before joining or comparing programs?
If you are evaluating vendor programs as a potential partner, look beyond the program name or headline benefits. Check the current official terms for:
- Eligibility, onboarding, and ongoing requirements.
- Tier criteria and what changes between tiers.
- How discounts, margins, and incentives work, including applicable conditions.
- Whether deal registration or lead ownership is offered and how it is handled.
- Available training, certifications, marketing resources, and co-selling support.
- Technical and customer support, plus the responsibilities each party retains.
- Geographic coverage and which partner types the program is designed for.
- How the vendor handles channel conflicts and disputes.
Program benefits and terms are vendor-specific and can change, so confirm details on the vendor’s current program page before making a decision. For vendors administering partner resources and communications, partner relationship management (PRM) software is one possible tool; it is not itself a channel partner program.
