First identify the edge type
The right method depends on the blade’s geometry, not simply on the fact that it belongs to a multi-tool. A combination blade has two different sections, so treat each according to its edge type.

These angles are Leatherman’s stated standards, not a measurement of every factory edge or a guarantee that every Leatherman model has an identical bevel.
How to sharpen a plain-edge section
Leatherman says straight-edged blades can be sharpened with standard equipment such as whetstones, rods, and sharpening kits. Work on both sides, keeping to the existing bevel rather than changing the angle unnecessarily. The manufacturer’s standard is 16° per side—32° when both sides are counted together.

How to sharpen a serrated section
Use a sharpening tool or system suited to the curves of the serrations. Work on the beveled side, following the shape of each serration. Do not sharpen the flat back: removing material there wears away the serrations and can reduce the blade’s effectiveness.
What to do with another brand or model
Do not assume Leatherman’s angles apply to another multi-tool. The correct angle and sharpening method depend on that blade and its maker’s guidance. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific model before choosing an angle or sharpening both sides.

Equipment and service options
Sharpening tools
Leatherman describes standard equipment, including whetstones, rods, and kits, as suitable for straight edges. Serrations need a system that accommodates their curvature. Its Blade Sharpener is described as including a carbide sharpener, ceramic hone, and diamond-coated rod, with the rod intended for serrated blades. Manufacturer sharpening service
Leatherman advertises a free sharpening service for tools and knives featuring MagnaCut steel, but it covers only non-serrated portions. Chipped or broken blades are excluded from routine sharpening, and eligibility and handling depend on the current service terms. For non-MagnaCut products, Leatherman’s FAQ directs owners to its maintenance advice and Blade Sharpener.
