A Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) is a cybersecurity professional credential issued by EC-Council. It recognizes knowledge of how attackers find weaknesses in computer systems, applied lawfully and with permission to assess security. Testing without authorization is not ethical hacking.

What is the definition of a Certified Ethical Hacker?

EC-Council’s CEH Candidate Handbook v4.0 defines a Certified Ethical Hacker as “a skilled professional who understands and knows how to look for weaknesses and vulnerabilities in target systems and uses the same knowledge and tools as a malicious hacker but in a lawful and legitimate manner to assess the security posture of a target system(s).”

In practical terms, a CEH applies attacker techniques to help an organization identify security weaknesses before they are exploited. The defining condition is authorization: a tester should assess only systems they own or have explicit permission to test. The handbook describes ethical hacking as testing one’s own computers or computers for which official permission has been granted, then taking preventive, corrective and protective measures before a real compromise occurs.

What does a Certified Ethical Hacker do?

A CEH uses knowledge of common attack methods to look for vulnerabilities and help evaluate a system’s security. The work is not simply using hacking tools; it takes place within an agreed legal scope and is intended to support security assessment and improvement. The specific tasks depend on the engagement and the authorization granted.

What does CEH training cover?

EC-Council currently presents its program as CEH v13. Its program page lists 20 learning modules, 221 hands-on labs and 550 attack techniques. These are issuer-reported program details, not independent measures of course quality or job outcomes. EC-Council frames the material as learning attacker methods from a defensive and ethical perspective.

Hands-on practice is relevant because the credential concerns applying security knowledge, not just knowing terminology. The listed lab count does not by itself establish how much practice an individual learner will complete or how prepared they will be for a particular job.

What are the CEH exams?

The CEH knowledge exam is the exam associated with the underlying credential. EC-Council describes it as 125 multiple-choice questions over four hours. A separate practical exam is an additional pathway associated with the CEH Master designation, not a replacement for the knowledge exam: EC-Council describes that practical exam as 20 challenges over six hours. See EC-Council’s About the CEH Exam page for its current exam information.

Who is eligible to take the CEH exam?

EC-Council describes two eligibility routes. A candidate can complete official training, or apply based on prior information-security experience.

  • Official training: Complete training through EC-Council’s online program, an Authorized Training Center or an official academic partner.
  • Experience-based application: EC-Council’s CEH certification requirements specify at least two years of information-security experience for this route. Applicants must provide evidence and receive approval.

Check the issuer’s current requirements before applying: eligibility depends on the route, and the experience path requires review rather than being automatic.

How should you decide whether CEH is a fit?

Compare the credential’s requirements and learning approach with your goals before enrolling or scheduling an exam.

  • Eligibility: Determine whether you will qualify through official training or whether you can document at least two years of information-security experience and apply for approval.
  • Exam format: Distinguish the four-hour knowledge exam for CEH from the additional practical exam associated with CEH Master.
  • Blueprint and practice: Review the current exam information and decide whether the program’s topics and hands-on work match the skills you want to develop.
  • Provider and delivery: If choosing training, verify that the provider is an EC-Council Authorized Training Center or official academic partner, and confirm the current delivery format and local availability.
  • Cost: Ask the issuer or provider for current costs for your location and route. Prices and availability are not established here, so compare them directly before committing.

CEH is a credential, not a guarantee of employment, practical proficiency or permission to test a particular system. Its value to an individual depends on their goals, experience, preparation and the requirements of the roles they seek.
