For property-notification SMS, let the provider report message progress asynchronously, store each update in your application, and have your FastAPI status route return that stored state. Treat polling as a way to check your app’s latest known status—not as proof of delivery. In Twilio’s lifecycle, sent means an upstream carrier accepted the message; delivered means Twilio received delivery confirmation from the upstream carrier and, where available, the destination handset.
Separate the SMS provider’s status from your application’s status
A property event—such as a maintenance update or an appointment reminder—can trigger an outbound message. The SMS provider creates a message resource and reports its progress. Your application can save the provider’s message identifier and latest state, then expose that state through a separate endpoint keyed to your own notification record.

That separation matters: the provider owns the message lifecycle, while your FastAPI service owns the local record and the response it returns to a user or operator. Twilio documents both asynchronous status callbacks and retrieval of a specific message resource by its SID; storing updates and serving them from an application endpoint is an implementation pattern built around those mechanisms. Twilio’s Messages resource documentation describes message statuses and the status callback parameter.
What the outbound statuses mean
For Twilio Programmable Messaging, documented outbound statuses include queued, sending, sent, failed, and delivered. The exact sequence can vary with the messaging channel and sending setup.

queuedorsending: the message is in progress; it has not yet reached a confirmed delivery state.sent: the nearest upstream carrier accepted the message. This is not confirmation that the recipient’s handset received it.delivered: Twilio received delivery confirmation from the upstream carrier and, where available, the destination handset.failed: the provider reports a failed message. Preserve any available error details so the application can distinguish this from a status that has not yet updated.
Use the provider’s status as reported, with its limits made clear. A missing or delayed update is not automatically a failure: show a pending or not-yet-reconciled state until you have a provider result or an explicit application timeout policy.
Choose callbacks, retrieval, or both
Use callbacks to update local state asynchronously
Twilio can send an HTTP POST to a status callback URL as a message changes state. You can configure a message-specific callback or a service-level callback. The callback approach lets your application update its local record without repeatedly asking the provider for every status check. See Twilio’s outbound message status tracking guide.

Retrieve a message when you need an explicit check
If you have the Twilio message SID, the API can retrieve that Message resource and its current status. Retrieval is useful as an explicit check or as a reconciliation path for a local record that may be stale. It complements callbacks rather than replacing the need to maintain your application’s own notification state. Twilio describes retrieval in its Messaging Webhooks documentation.

Build the FastAPI flow
- Create and identify the message. When sending the SMS, provide a status callback URL if you want per-message callbacks, and save the returned provider SID against your property notification record.
- Receive the provider callback. Expose a public FastAPI route that accepts the provider’s form-encoded POST. Validate the request signature using Twilio’s SDK-provided validation methods, then associate the update with the message identifier.
- Persist updates defensively. Store the reported status, receipt time, and error details when present. Make processing idempotent, tolerate added payload fields, and define how your application handles delayed or out-of-order updates.
- Serve a separate polling endpoint. For example, an application route keyed by your notification ID can return the last stored provider status and the time it was updated. Keep message content and recipient phone numbers out of public responses unless the caller is authorized to see them.
- Reconcile selectively. If the local state remains stale or the workflow requires an explicit provider check, retrieve the Message resource using its SID and update your local record according to your chosen state-transition policy.
Twilio’s callback guide notes that callback fields can vary by channel and event, may evolve, and can arrive out of order because of network latency. It recommends using SDK signature-validation methods rather than writing validation from scratch. Treat those provider details as input to your handler; persistence rules, deduplication, and status-transition policy are decisions for your application.

- CABLE INTERNET AND WIFI MADE FOR YOUR HOME: This two-in-one cable modem and WiFi router puts every setting in your hands, from your WiFi names and passwords to how your network runs, so it works the way your household needs.
- APPROVED FOR YOUR PROVIDER AND PLAN: Works with Xfinity internet plans up to 800Mbps and Cox plans up to 500Mbps. Not compatible with Verizon, AT&T, CenturyLink, DirecTV, DISH, or bundled voice plans. ISP activation required after setup.
- GET THE FULL SPEED OF PLANS UP TO 800 MBPS: DOCSIS 3.0 delivers plenty of speed for HD and 4K streaming, online gaming, and video calls across your home. Actual speeds vary by plan and provider.
- AC1900 WIFI COVERAGE FOR THE WHOLE HOME: Stay connected in every room with dual-band AC1900 WiFi covering up to 1,800 sq ft and Beamforming+ for stronger signal to mobile devices. Real-world coverage depends on home size, layout, and building materials.
- WIRED CONNECTIONS FOR YOUR FASTEST DEVICES: Four Gigabit Ethernet ports keep gaming consoles, desktops, and streaming devices hardwired for the lowest latency and the most stable connection in your home.
Twilio describes callback timing this way: “Status callback requests are HTTP requests and are therefore subject to differences in latency caused by changing network conditions.” A callback is an asynchronous update, not a guarantee that your polling endpoint will immediately reflect a new provider state.
What to return to clients and operators
Return a small, clear representation of your notification record, for example its application notification ID, latest provider status, and local update time. Distinguish provider-reported progress from delivery confirmation and from a local timeout. If no callback has arrived, report that the status is pending or not yet reconciled rather than labeling the message failed solely because the local record is unchanged.

The exact response shape, authorization rules, retention period, and timeout behavior are application-specific. Avoid exposing a recipient’s phone number or the message body in a status response unless the caller’s access and use case justify it.

Twilio’s status lifecycle and callback behavior are tied to its messaging product, channel, and sending setup; do not assume every channel follows the same sequence. Amazon SNS documents SMS publishing directly to a phone number or through a topic whose subscribed endpoints receive the message, but its Publish documentation does not establish an equivalent per-message delivery-status polling workflow. Do not infer one from the ability to publish. See Amazon SNS Publish.
