A card autobattler is a strategy game in which you assemble a team—often by choosing unit cards or minions—then watch it fight automatically. Your main decisions happen before and between battles: what to recruit, how to spend resources, which combinations to pursue, and where to place units. The label describes a broad style of game, not one fixed set of rules.
How turns work in a card autobattler
A typical round alternates between preparation and combat. You make choices while assembling or adjusting your team; the game then resolves the fight without requiring you to direct each unit’s actions. The result gives you information to use in a later preparation phase.

- Choose units: Draft from a shared pool, recruit from a shop, or select from another game-specific roster.
- Spend resources: Decide whether to recruit, improve your team, or save resources, according to that game’s economy.
- Build combinations: Consider unit traits, abilities, and items that may work well together.
- Position the team: Arrange units to shape how your formation meets the opponent’s.
- Watch combat resolve: Units fight automatically; you generally make your next strategic choices before or after the battle rather than issuing moment-to-moment commands.
- Adapt: Use the outcome and the choices available in later rounds to revise your plan.
This is a useful outline, not a universal ruleset. Games differ in how they handle resources, rounds, health, unit selection, and combat.
What strategy do you control if combat is automatic?
Automation shifts the focus of play; it does not remove decision-making. You shape the fight by choosing the team that enters it and arranging that team. A strong plan balances the units and combinations you can actually obtain against the resources you have and the formation you expect to face.

How Teamfight Tactics and Hearthstone Battlegrounds illustrate the genre
Riot Games’ Teamfight Tactics explainer, credited to Riot Beernana and dated May 1, 2021 in the page’s UK locale, describes TFT as a round-based PvP game in which you draft a team that battles automatically. It names shared-pool drafting, team building, economy management, items, and positioning as parts of the strategy.
Blizzard’s Battlegrounds announcement presents Hearthstone Battlegrounds as an eight-player auto-battling mode. Players recruit minions, build a board, and face a series of duels; they can place minions and change their positions between combat phases.

| Example | What the official source establishes | How it helps explain the game |
|---|---|---|
| Teamfight Tactics | Round-based PvP; a drafted team fights automatically; strategy includes shared-pool drafting, team building, economy, items, and positioning. | Shows how composition and resource decisions can sit alongside automatic combat. |
| Hearthstone Battlegrounds | Hearthstone auto-battling mode; recruit minions, form a board, duel, and reposition minions between combat phases. | Shows a minion-card board-building presentation with between-fight adjustments. |
These examples share a preparation-to-combat rhythm, but their rules are not interchangeable. To compare particular games, check what players draft or buy, how resources work, whether and when units can be moved, how synergies and items function, how combat resolves, and whether opponents are fought synchronously or asynchronously. The official descriptions above do not establish every one of those details for every game.

Not necessarily. “Card autobattler” is a descriptive umbrella: cards may represent units or provide the interface for choosing them, but the label alone does not tell you whether a game has collectible decks, how its roster is acquired, or how its turns and economy work. Check the individual game’s rules instead of inferring them from the genre name.
