If graphics look blurry, flicker, or leave ghost-like trails after you enable Enhance PSSR Image Quality, switch that optional setting off and compare the same scene again. It applies to PS5 Pro, not the standard PS5, and Sony says results vary by game. If the problem remains with the setting off, check the game update and the HDMI/display connection before treating it as a PSSR issue.
First, confirm which setting and console you’re using
Enhance PSSR Image Quality is an optional system setting for supported PS5 Pro games that use PSSR. It is not the separate “Enhance Image Quality for PS4 Games” compatibility setting. If you have a standard PS5, this PSSR option does not apply.

Sony announced upgraded PSSR support in a system software update on March 16, 2026. The feature can be enabled for supported games through a PS5 Pro system setting, but Sony cautions that results may vary by title. Check Sony’s announcement for the feature context.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTurn off Enhance PSSR Image Quality and compare the same scene
- On PS5 Pro, open Settings and find the system-level Enhance PSSR Image Quality option. Turn it off. Menu wording or placement can vary with system software, so look for that exact setting rather than the PS4-games compatibility option.
- Return to the affected game and revisit the same scene. Compare the same moving objects and fine-detail areas, such as foliage, thin lines, or distant edges.
- Note whether the blur, flicker, or ghosting changes with the option off. If it disappears, the behavior appears linked to the enhanced setting in that game; it does not establish that every game using PSSR will behave the same way.
Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Sid Shuman put the toggle’s purpose plainly: “If it results in any unexpected visual effects, you can turn it off at any time.” That is a reversible check, not a guarantee that turning it off will fix every image problem.

Why does PSSR look blurry or produce flickering or ghosting?
The official guidance establishes that results can differ by title, but it does not diagnose the cause of a particular game’s blur, flicker, or afterimage. A symptom that changes when the optional setting changes is evidence that it may be associated with the enhanced mode in that title—not proof of a console or display fault. A symptom that persists with the setting off may have another cause.
For another useful comparison, test a different supported game. If the effect appears in only one title, focus on that game’s update status and publisher guidance. If it occurs across games or persists regardless of the setting, check the display signal path next.
Check the game’s update and PSSR support
Install any available update for the affected game, then review its publisher’s patch notes or PlayStation’s supported-title information. PSSR support and the enhanced experience are title-dependent, and the supported list can change. Sony’s Canada PS5 Pro page describes Enhance PSSR Image Quality as applying to PS5 Pro games that support PSSR and lists supported titles; check the current page because availability may change.
Remedy Entertainment graphics technical director Tatu Aalto described the upgraded technology in Sony’s announcement this way: “The upgraded PSSR improves image upscaling quality and stability.” That general description does not mean every supported game will look identical or that a particular visual artifact has a known universal fix.

Rule out a general HDMI or display problem
If the issue remains after the setting and game checks, try PlayStation’s standard picture troubleshooting steps. These are general signal/display checks, not PSSR-specific treatments.
- Connect the PS5 Pro directly to the TV or display, bypassing a receiver, HDMI switch, or capture device.
- Confirm the display is set to the HDMI input connected to the console.
- Check for and install available firmware updates for the TV or display.
- Try another HDMI port on the display.
- If available, test with a different HDMI cable. PlayStation recommends this as a general picture check; it does not establish that a cable causes PSSR reconstruction blur.
PlayStation’s PS5 picture and sound troubleshooting page covers these general checks. A replacement cable is worth considering only if testing points to a broader connection problem, not simply because enhanced PSSR looks different.
When to contact PlayStation Support
If the visual problem continues across settings and after the display checks, contact PlayStation Support and describe the PS5 Pro model, affected game, scene, whether the setting changes the symptom, and the display connection you tested. Sony’s support material does not provide a dedicated diagnostic or universal repair for PSSR artifacts; it also does not establish that persistent artifacts require a factory reset, database rebuild, or hardware repair.
