What Is a Call Pickup Service?

A call pickup service lets an authorized user answer a call ringing on another phone. Learn how group, designated, and directed pickup differ.

A call pickup service is a telephone-system feature that lets an authorized user answer a call ringing on someone else’s phone. Depending on the system, the user may pick up a call from an assigned group or target a particular phone. This is different from a business answering service, which takes calls on a company’s behalf.

How call pickup works

A call rings on one phone, and another authorized user answers it using the phone system’s pickup feature. The system determines which ringing calls the user is allowed to answer based on its configuration.

Group pickup

With group pickup, a user can answer a call ringing on another phone in the same assigned pickup group. This can be useful when colleagues share responsibility for incoming calls. The feature is limited to the group’s scope.

Designated or directed pickup

Designated pickup lets a user target a specific phone’s ringing call. Some systems use the term “directed pickup” for a form that can reach beyond a pickup group; Comcast, for example, describes directed pickup as extending to an enterprise. The exact terms and reach depend on the provider.

How users answer another phone’s call

The action is system-specific. It may involve selecting a feature key or dialing a feature access code. Comcast’s guide describes going off-hook and dialing an access code to answer a call in the pickup group, but that sequence and code should not be assumed to work on another system.

How pickup groups are configured

An administrator generally assigns users to pickup groups and configures the feature in the phone system. Group rules are not universal: Verizon’s guide, for example, says a user can belong to only one pickup group and that members of a group must be at the same site. Those are Verizon-specific constraints, not general requirements for every provider.

What to check with your phone provider

  • Whether the system supports group pickup, designated pickup, directed pickup, or some combination.
  • Which phones or users a pickup action can reach, including whether directed pickup works outside a group.
  • How to invoke the feature on your phones, such as through a feature key or access code.
  • How administrators assign group membership and whether the provider imposes site or group-count limits.

Feature names, access methods, and configuration limits vary by phone system. Check your provider’s documentation or ask your administrator for the instructions and access code that apply to your setup.
