A bullet heaven game is an action game in which you survive enemy crowds while your character attacks largely automatically and upgrades make you stronger over the course of a run. Instead of aiming every shot, you typically focus on movement, positioning and choosing how to build your character. The exact controls and progression vary by game: “bullet heaven” is a genre shorthand, not a fixed rulebook.
How a bullet heaven game works
The defining loop is simple: enemies arrive in groups, your character deals much of its damage automatically, and you try to stay alive while improving your offensive abilities. Upgrades can make attacks more frequent, more powerful or more extensive, producing the screen-filling offense associated with the style.

Because attacks are automated to a significant degree, the moment-to-moment challenge often centers on where you move and which upgrades you choose—not on manually lining up every shot. But automation is a matter of degree. Some games add manual aiming or firing, vehicles, co-op, RPG systems or other mechanics, so check an individual game’s controls and progression rather than assuming they all play alike.
How it differs from bullet hell
The names suggest opposite emphases. In a familiar bullet hell game, the challenge often revolves around avoiding dense patterns of incoming projectiles. In a bullet heaven game, the focus is more likely to be surviving crowds while your character unleashes an increasingly powerful volume of attacks and you manage positioning and upgrades.

That is a broad contrast, not a strict genre boundary. Steam’s Bullet Heaven tag description, quoted by PC Gamer on May 18, 2026, calls it “The opposite of Bullet Hell; Focus on upgrades while automatically attacking hordes of enemies.” The description captures the usual distinction, but it does not establish a checklist every game must meet.
Why the genre has several names
You may see the same broad family described as “survivors-like,” “Survivors-genre,” “auto shooter” or “auto battler.” The Steam curator page for Vampire Survivors Genre Games groups several of those terms together. A December 2025 PC Gamer report also recorded “survivorslikes” and the phrase “auto-attacking wave-based survival games” in a debate about what to call the category.

The labels overlap, but they are not perfect synonyms in every context. “Auto battler,” in particular, can refer to other kinds of games. If you are searching for this style, try “bullet heaven,” “survivors-like,” or “games like Vampire Survivors” as well as “auto shooter.”

Why Vampire Survivors is the reference point
Vampire Survivors is a useful example of the style and helped popularize it, but it should not be described as the first game in the category. GamesRadar+ reported in 2026 that it popularized the genre while noting it was not the first.

What the Steam tag tells you
Steam added a “Bullet Heaven” store tag, according to PC Gamer’s May 18, 2026 report. That gives players a convenient way to discover games on that storefront, but a store tag is a discovery label, not a universal authority on genre boundaries. Platform tags and naming conventions can change.

- Controls: Do you mainly move and position your character, or do you also aim and fire manually?
- Upgrade choices: Do you select upgrades during a run, gain them through another system, or use both?
- Run structure: Is the game built around timed waves, open-ended survival, individual stages or another format?
- Progression: What resets when a run ends, and what—if anything—carries over?
- Extra mechanics: Does it add co-op, RPG systems, vehicles or another major twist?
The Steam curator collection spans varied settings and mechanics, which is a reminder that the label describes a broad family rather than one identical template.
