A branded blimp is a lighter-than-air aircraft whose envelope carries a company’s name, logo or other identity. Helium gives it lift; engines and propellers move it; tail surfaces steer it. The large, visible aircraft can promote a brand at public events and, in some cases, provide aerial footage. Although “blimp” is commonly used for these craft, the modern Goodyear airships described in the company’s materials are technically semi-rigid airships, not strict blimps.
What is a branded blimp?
It is an airship used in part as a moving promotional display. Its envelope—the large outer surface of the aircraft—makes the company identity visible from the ground. Unlike a static billboard, an airship can travel to public appearances, including major sporting and entertainment events. Goodyear also describes aerial event footage as part of the modern role of its branded airships.

The visibility of the aircraft gives a company an opportunity to put its name in the setting where an event is taking place. That is a description of how the display is used, not a measured claim about advertising effectiveness: the sources cited here do not establish a specific return on investment or quantify how much brand recognition a blimp generates.

How does a blimp stay in the air?
Helium supplies the lift. The gas inside the envelope is lighter than the surrounding air, so the aircraft experiences buoyant lift. The envelope contains the lifting gas, while pressure and, depending on the airship’s design, structural elements help preserve the craft’s shape.
It helps to separate two jobs that can be easy to confuse: staying aloft and moving forward. The helium-filled envelope creates lift, while engines and propellers provide thrust. The aircraft’s frame or internal pressure helps it retain its shape; neither is the source of its forward motion. This distinction is why an airship can be buoyant without being propelled like an airplane.
That structural detail matters because “blimp” has a stricter technical meaning than everyday conversation suggests. A strict blimp is non-rigid: it has no internal frame holding its shape, and its form depends on pressure from the lifting gas and air-filled ballonets. A semi-rigid airship combines a pressurized envelope with an internal frame. A rigid airship uses an internal frame to hold its shape.
| Airship type | How its shape is maintained | Key distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Non-rigid airship (strict blimp) | Lifting-gas pressure and air-filled ballonets | No internal frame holds the shape |
| Semi-rigid airship | A pressurized envelope and an internal frame | Combines envelope pressure with structural support |
| Rigid airship | An internal frame | The frame holds the form |
Ballonets are air-filled compartments that help a non-rigid airship maintain its shape as conditions change; they are part of the pressure-based arrangement, not the same thing as a rigid frame. The comparison is about how the envelope is supported, rather than three different kinds of gas or propulsion.
Goodyear’s technical explainer describes its Wingfoot NT as a semi-rigid airship with an upper frame. Its company history likewise identifies the modern Goodyear-branded Zeppelin NT craft as semi-rigid. So it is understandable to call one a blimp in ordinary speech, but “semi-rigid airship” is the more precise description for the craft covered by those official materials. Goodyear’s airship science explainer describes the structural categories and the Wingfoot NT; its corporate history identifies the modern craft’s type.
What is inside a modern Goodyear airship?
The broad answer is helium, an envelope, structural support and propulsion equipment. More precise material and size details are available for specific models and dates; they should not be treated as specifications for every branded airship.

In a March 14, 2014 release about its then-new airship, Goodyear described a helium-filled craft with a polyester envelope and DuPont Tedlar film surrounding a semi-rigid internal structure. The release gave that airship’s length as 246 feet and its capacity as up to 12 passengers. Those figures belong to the model described in the 2014 announcement; they are not a universal blimp length or passenger limit. Goodyear’s 2014 announcement gives those construction and capacity details.
A separate figure appears in Goodyear Europe’s 2020 corporate article: it lists a total volume of 8,425 cubic metres for the European Zeppelin NT. That volume describes that model, not the 2014 airship’s length or the volume of every Goodyear airship. Comparing specifications is useful only when the model and source are kept attached to each figure.
These numbers describe different properties. Length measures the aircraft from end to end, passenger capacity is a reported maximum for the announced model, and cubic metres describe volume. They cannot be substituted for one another or combined into a single fleet specification. The dates matter too: the 2014 announcement describes an airship introduced then, while the European volume figure comes from a 2020 article.
How does a blimp move and turn?
Buoyant lift does not propel the aircraft forward. Engines turn propellers to provide thrust, while control surfaces at the tail steer the craft. On the Wingfoot NT, Goodyear’s technical page describes three four-cylinder engines rated at 200 horsepower each, mounted on the sides and tail. It says the engines can propel the airship at up to 73 miles per hour. Those are Wingfoot NT specifications, not a general speed or engine arrangement for all airships.
The same technical page says the Wingfoot NT’s tail fins work together as ruddervators. Electrical fly-by-wire controls operate them, and a side-stick steers the aircraft left or right and up or down through those tail surfaces. The arrangement makes the division of work clear: helium provides buoyancy, engines and propellers provide movement, and controlled tail surfaces guide direction.
In other words, steering is not simply a matter of pointing the nose or changing the amount of helium. The cited Wingfoot NT description assigns directional control to coordinated tail surfaces, operated electrically from the side-stick. The engines supply thrust, while the tail fins guide the aircraft’s direction. These details apply to that model and should not be assumed for every airship design.

Goodyear’s 2014 release also describes computer-controlled avionics coordinating engine thrust and movement. It reported a top speed of 73 miles per hour for the new airship and contrasted that with about 50 miles per hour for the previous generation at the time. This is a dated comparison in a company announcement, not evidence that every older airship had that speed or that the figure describes a current fleet-wide comparison. The model-specific engine and steering details are on Goodyear’s technical page; the historical speed comparison is in the 2014 release.
What is a branded blimp used for?
Public appearances and brand display
The most visible use is carrying a company identity through the sky above an event or other public setting. The scale and elevated position of the envelope give the branding a broad line of sight for people on the ground. Goodyear’s corporate history describes brand awareness as one aim of its 1930s airship program, while its modern history covers the aircraft’s continuing public profile.
Aerial event footage
The aircraft can also serve as a platform for aerial video at major sports and entertainment events. This is a separate use from displaying a logo: the airship is both a visible promotional presence and, when used for coverage, a vantage point for footage. The available sources establish that role, but do not provide a universal list of events, video equipment specifications or a claim that every appearance includes filming.

Those uses explain why a branded airship may be seen at an event even when its primary visible feature is the logo: the appearance itself provides a public display, and some event operations also make use of the elevated view for footage. The two functions can overlap, but one does not prove the other is happening at every flight.
How should you interpret the published specifications?
Airship numbers are meaningful only alongside the model, source and date. The following published figures illustrate why a single “blimp specification” would be misleading.
| Figure | What it describes | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 246 feet long | The new Goodyear airship described in 2014 | Goodyear company release, March 14, 2014 |
| Up to 12 passengers | The same airship in the 2014 announcement | Goodyear company release, March 14, 2014 |
| Three four-cylinder, 200-horsepower engines | Wingfoot NT configuration | Goodyear Blimp technical page, accessed in 2026 |
| Up to 73 miles per hour | Wingfoot NT capability stated on the technical page | Goodyear Blimp technical page, accessed in 2026 |
| 8,425 cubic metres total volume | European Zeppelin NT | Goodyear Europe corporate article, 2020 |
The 73-miles-per-hour figure also appeared in the 2014 release for its new airship, which compared it with approximately 50 miles per hour for the prior generation at that time. Because the technical page and release refer to different contexts and dates, the values should not be generalized into a current speed for all branded airships.

A useful rule when reading an airship specification is to ask three questions: which model is being described, what quantity is being measured, and when was the figure published? That prevents a passenger capacity from being mistaken for a general limit, a European model’s volume from being assigned to a different craft, or a historical speed comparison from being presented as a current fleet-wide fact.

Schedules and locations change, so an old event listing should not be treated as current. Goodyear maintains a schedule and location page for appearances. Check that destination close to the date you plan to attend; a listing can change as the schedule is updated.
For a basic visual explanation of the aircraft, an airship model or toy can help make the envelope and tail shape easier to picture, but it is not needed to understand the principles. The sources cited here do not verify a particular blimp model’s availability or licensing status.
Why the name still matters
The word “blimp” remains familiar because it is used broadly for large, helium-filled advertising airships. Technical classification, however, follows construction: non-rigid, semi-rigid or rigid. The distinction is not just terminology; it describes whether pressure, a frame or both preserve the aircraft’s form.
The history also extends beyond one modern model. In 2025, the Associated Press marked 100 years since the first flight of Pilgrim, which took place on June 3, 1925. That milestone concerns the historical airship and is distinct from the 1912 date Goodyear gives for the start of its own lighter-than-air work. The Associated Press account reports the Pilgrim anniversary and a commemorative flight over Ohio.

How does a blimp stay up?
Helium inside the envelope is lighter than the surrounding air, creating buoyant lift. The envelope’s pressure and, in some designs, an internal frame help maintain the airship’s shape.

Is the Goodyear Blimp really a blimp?
In everyday speech, people commonly use “blimp” for Goodyear’s branded airships. Goodyear’s corporate history identifies its modern Zeppelin NT craft as semi-rigid, so that is the more technically precise classification.
How does a blimp move and turn?
Engines turn propellers to provide thrust, and tail control surfaces steer the aircraft. Goodyear says the Wingfoot NT’s three engines can propel it up to 73 mph, while its ruddervators are operated by electrical fly-by-wire controls.
What is a branded blimp used for?
It carries a company identity above public events as a visible promotional display. Goodyear also describes aerial event footage as a role for its modern airships, though not every appearance is stated to include filming.
How fast is the Goodyear Blimp?
Goodyear’s technical page gives up to 73 mph for the Wingfoot NT. A 2014 company release gave the same top speed for its then-new airship and compared it with about 50 mph for the previous generation at that time; these are model- and date-specific figures.
The Bottom Line
A branded blimp pairs a visible company identity with lighter-than-air flight: helium provides lift, engines and propellers provide thrust, and tail surfaces steer. “Blimp” is often used broadly, but Goodyear describes its modern Zeppelin NT craft as semi-rigid airships. Keep published size, passenger, speed and volume figures tied to the model and date that reported them.
