How LiDAR Mapping Reveals Hidden WWII Battlefield Features

Airborne LiDAR can make subtle battlefield earthworks visible beneath woodland, but terrain models reveal shapes—not their date, purpose, or military history. Discover how archaeologists verify candidate features using records, maps, photographs, and fieldwork.

Airborne LiDAR can reveal subtle battlefield landforms beneath woodland by measuring ground elevation through gaps in the canopy. The resulting terrain model may make trenches, depressions, banks, and other shapes easier to see—but it does not identify their age or purpose. Archaeologists test those interpretations against historic records, maps, photographs, and field observations.

What LiDAR shows beneath trees

Airborne LiDAR—light detection and ranging—measures the time it takes laser pulses sent from an aircraft to return from surfaces below. A sensor records many returns from terrain, vegetation, and other objects. Processing those point measurements into elevation models can separate likely ground returns from vegetation returns, making land relief easier to inspect even where foliage obstructs an ordinary aerial photograph or a view from the ground.

The key distinction is that LiDAR measures surface shape; it is not a camera that sees through solid material. Some pulses can pass through openings in a canopy and reach the ground, but a ground model represents the returns that were captured and classified. The method does not guarantee a clear view under every tree, and it does not detect buried objects directly. Its archaeological value is that small changes in elevation—such as a shallow bank, a depression, or a linear earthwork—may become legible in a model even when vegetation makes them hard to recognize in the field.

Historic England’s overview, updated in 2024, describes airborne systems measuring 20,000 to 100,000 points per second. That is a figure from its general explanation, not a universal specification for every sensor or survey. The same overview discusses airborne models at metre and sub-metre resolution: depending on the survey and processing, these can make features that are difficult to detect by other means recognizable.

From laser returns to an archaeological interpretation

A useful way to understand battlefield LiDAR is as a sequence of evidence-building steps. A terrain image is not the end product of archaeological reasoning; it is a map that helps researchers formulate and check questions about the landscape.

  1. Acquire elevation data. An airborne sensor collects laser returns across a survey area. Coverage and the amount of usable ground information depend on the sensor, flight plan, vegetation, and acquisition conditions.
  2. Process the point cloud. Researchers classify returns and create a terrain model intended to represent the ground surface. Filtering vegetation can help expose relief, but classification is not perfect and does not restore terrain information that the sensor did not capture.
  3. Inspect and map candidate forms. Archaeologists look for shapes and spatial relationships that could be meaningful: a line of depressions, a bank with a possible ditch, or features arranged in a pattern. At this point, these are candidates, not automatically confirmed WWII remains.
  4. Compare independent evidence. Historic maps, wartime records, aerial photographs, military engineering patterns, and other spatial data can help explain when and why a feature may have formed. Researchers may also use GIS to examine how candidate features relate to one another and to the wider landscape.
  5. Check selected features on the ground. Field visits can document a feature’s shape and condition and test whether it is consistent with the proposed interpretation. Access, permits, heritage protections, and preservation can limit what researchers can inspect.

Each step narrows uncertainty, but the evidence may not support a definitive answer for every mapped shape. A terrain model can establish that a form exists; historical and field evidence help establish what it might mean.

What battlefield traces can look like

Trenches are an obvious example, but a WWII landscape can contain many kinds of human-made or altered terrain. Research in the Ardennes and at Seelow Heights reports fighting positions and other earthworks alongside features associated with transport, shelter, storage, and staging. A battlefield is not only the line where combat took place: logistical activity and later changes to the landscape can leave traces too.

Different origins can produce similar-looking shapes. A depression might be a military feature, a natural landform, or the result of later land use. Forestry operations, agriculture, drainage, and construction can alter terrain or create forms that resemble archaeological remains. Even when a feature is plausibly military, its date and function may remain uncertain. Researchers therefore use terms such as “candidate,” “likely,” or “possible” where the evidence does not justify a stronger label.

Nor does a mapped battlefield feature necessarily belong to a particular engagement or unit. In Seelow, the study describes remains from before and after the battle as well as military-related activity. A map of landforms should not be read as a direct record of every combat action.

Two LiDAR case studies, at different scales

Two 2023 studies illustrate how LiDAR can contribute to WWII battlefield research while answering different kinds of questions. Their reported feature counts are not directly comparable: they cover different areas, use different survey approaches, and apply different levels of detail.

Case Survey and evidence Reported findings How to read the results
Battle of the Bulge, forested Ardennes Stichelbaut and colleagues reported drone-mounted LiDAR at 1 m resolution and very-high-resolution SLAM methods in a 2023 article in Antiquity. The study describes fieldwork documenting the battlefield. More than 940 features were revealed. Many were subsequently visited and confirmed. The finding shows how local, high-detail capture can help identify features in forested terrain. “Revealed” does not mean that every feature has the same level of confirmation or that every feature represents the same activity.
Seelow Heights, eastern Brandenburg A 2023 conflict-archaeology study combined airborne laser scanning with archival research, GIS mapping, and limited field reconnaissance. The broad assessment covered about 6,000 km² and found likely military or military-related activity across at least 158 km². Researchers mapped 2,515 individual features in detail. The counts describe that study’s mapped and interpreted evidence, not every surviving feature. The authors note that resolution and landscape change complicate assessments of feature distribution.

The Ardennes: focused survey in a wooded battlefield

The Ardennes project addressed the problem of recognizing battlefield remains in forest. Its combination of drone-mounted 1 m-resolution LiDAR and very-high-resolution SLAM methods was used to document more than 940 features, many of which researchers later visited and confirmed. The work, published by Stichelbaut and colleagues in Antiquity in 2023, frames detection as part of battlefield documentation and heritage management—not simply the production of a striking terrain image.

The case also illustrates why the survey method and its scale matter. Local, detailed collection can help researchers examine small landforms that broad elevation data may not resolve clearly. Confirmation through visits adds another layer of evidence, but it does not make the results interchangeable with counts from a survey covering a much larger region.

Seelow Heights: a broad landscape and a varied record

At Seelow Heights, the researchers considered an approximately 6,000 km² battlefield landscape in eastern Brandenburg. Their broad assessment identified likely military or military-related activity across at least 158 km², then mapped 2,515 individual features in detail. Those features included trenches, field fortifications, shelling or bombing craters, storage areas, vehicle shelters, staging areas, and other traces of activity.

The study joined airborne laser scanning to archival research and GIS. Researchers also conducted two days of field reconnaissance to check a sample of features. Heritage-protection rules and permits constrained that work, so the reconnaissance was limited rather than a ground check of every mapped form. The authors discuss possible functions and units while acknowledging alternatives; the interpretation is stronger where the shape, its location, and historical evidence agree.

Seelow also makes the time-depth of a battlefield landscape clear. The mapped evidence includes activity predating the battle and post-battle remains. Urbanization and agricultural development have affected preservation and visibility, while limits in data resolution make it harder to assess the distribution of some features. The 2,515 mapped features are therefore the outcome of a particular study and method—not a complete census of battlefield archaeology.

How LiDAR fits with other evidence

Historical sources help turn a plausible shape into a more persuasive interpretation. A map or archival record may place military activity in the right area; aerial photographs can show how the land looked at a different time; field inspection can reveal the feature’s form and condition. These sources do not all answer the same question, and they can disagree. A careful interpretation weighs them together rather than treating one image layer as proof.

The Seelow study demonstrates that process through its combination of laser scanning, archives, GIS, and sample field reconnaissance. Historic England likewise cautions that LiDAR records landforms indiscriminately. In managed woodland, forestry processes can produce archaeological lookalikes, making alternative evidence especially important. Fieldwork is not merely a final photo opportunity: it can test an interpretation, identify later disturbance, and document preservation.

LiDAR is most useful as a way to survey extensive terrain and prioritize follow-up work. It can help researchers decide where a field visit or archival search may be most informative. It does not remove the need for those activities, and a lack of a clear feature in a model should not be treated as proof that no archaeological trace survives.

What affects the quality of a woodland survey

Canopy, understorey, and season

Ground returns depend partly on whether laser pulses can reach the surface through gaps in vegetation. Historic England recommends higher-resolution survey for woodland than for open ground and notes that winter capture can be preferable. Dense young regeneration or an unthinned conifer plantation may greatly restrict ground information or make a survey unsuitable. “LiDAR works under trees” is therefore too broad: performance depends on the vegetation and the survey design.

Resolution and ground-return quality

Point density, the quality of ground returns, acquisition conditions, and processing all affect what a terrain model can show. General-purpose elevation data may reveal broad patterns without resolving individual small features confidently. The Seelow authors specifically warn that resolution limitations complicate assessments of feature distribution. A visible pattern should be interpreted at the scale the data can support, rather than treated as equally precise everywhere.

Landscape change and preservation

Land use can erase, modify, or obscure evidence. Agriculture, erosion, forestry, and urban development may damage older traces or make them harder to distinguish. Conversely, later human activity can add new features to the terrain. A present-day model records the surface as surveyed; reconstructing an earlier battlefield requires evidence that helps separate surviving wartime forms from subsequent change.

Normandy’s inventory is a complementary example, not a LiDAR result

A French Ministry of Culture article dated 3 June 2026 reports a regional inventory of WWII remains in Calvados, Manche, and Orne. After ten years of work by DRAC de Normandie, Inrap, and the University of Caen, the inventory recorded 974 sites and 8,082 individual elements. These figures belong to that Normandy program and must not be attributed to LiDAR: the described method combined documentary sources, comparison of current imagery with 1940s–1950s aerial photographs, and pedestrian checks.

The inventory focuses on durable built or human-modified traces and excludes direct combat hazards such as bomb craters and munitions. Its workflow shows how a conflict landscape can be recorded through complementary historical and on-the-ground evidence, including the condition and location of surviving structures. It is distinct from the Ardennes and Seelow LiDAR studies; the Normandy counts are not a LiDAR detection total.

What a LiDAR battlefield map can—and cannot—tell you

  • It can show: surface relief and spatial patterns that may be hard to see under canopy or during ordinary ground inspection.
  • It can help locate: candidate trenches, banks, depressions, craters, shelters, and other terrain forms, depending on data quality and preservation.
  • It cannot establish by shape alone: a feature’s date, military purpose, connection to a specific unit, or relation to a particular moment in a battle.
  • It does not guarantee: that every feature will be visible through dense vegetation, that every visible form is archaeological, or that a mapped feature survives in its original condition.
  • It works best alongside: documentary research, historic maps and photographs, spatial analysis, and carefully planned field checks.

For readers, the safest way to interpret a terrain image is to distinguish what it directly records from what researchers infer. The elevation model shows a surface form. A historical explanation becomes credible when that form fits independent evidence and survives scrutiny on the ground.
