What Is a Bluetooth Audio Receiver? Definition and How It Works

A Bluetooth audio receiver accepts wireless audio from a source such as a phone and plays it or sends it to connected audio equipment. Here’s how receivers, adapters, and transmitters differ.

A Bluetooth audio receiver accepts audio sent wirelessly from a Bluetooth device, such as a phone, and either plays it through its own speakers or sends it to connected audio equipment. It is the listening end of the link; a Bluetooth transmitter sends audio.

How a Bluetooth audio receiver works

A phone, tablet, or computer acts as the source and sends an audio stream. The receiver accepts that stream and renders it through its built-in speakers or passes it to headphones, a stereo, or another connected audio system.

For common Bluetooth Classic stereo streaming, the relevant profile is A2DP, short for Advanced Audio Distribution Profile. Bluetooth SIG describes its purpose this way: “This profile defines the requirements for Bluetooth devices necessary for support of the high quality audio distribution.” A2DP 1.3.2 specification

A2DP describes stereo audio distribution; it does not mean that every feature works whenever two devices pair. The devices must support the profiles needed for the intended use. Codec, microphone, playback-control, and other capabilities depend on the specific devices and their specifications. Philips’ Bluetooth profile explanation

Where you’ll find a Bluetooth receiver

Built into audio equipment

Headphones, earbuds, and speakers can contain a Bluetooth receiver. Pair a compatible source, and the audio plays through that device without a separate adapter.

In a standalone receiver adapter

A receiver adapter adds wireless audio reception to equipment that has a compatible wired audio input but no Bluetooth receiver. The adapter receives audio from the phone and connects to the stereo or speaker by cable. For example, TP-Link’s HA100 documentation lists 3.5 mm and RCA connections for streaming to a stereo or standalone speaker. The manufacturer marks that model end of life, so it illustrates the category rather than a current buying recommendation. TP-Link HA100 product page

Receiver vs. transmitter

A receiver takes in a Bluetooth audio stream; a transmitter sends one. For instance, to play phone audio through a wired stereo, you need a receiver connected to the stereo’s audio input. To send audio from a TV to Bluetooth headphones, the sending device needs transmitter functionality. Some adapters offer both modes, but confirm the exact operating mode and ports rather than relying on the word “Bluetooth” in a product name.

How to check whether a receiver adapter will work

  1. Check the audio equipment’s input. Look for a compatible connection such as 3.5 mm AUX or RCA. The HA100 documentation is one example of an adapter listing both types; other models may differ.
  2. Match the receiver’s output to that input. Confirm that the adapter includes the right connector or that a suitable cable is specified.
  3. Check the Bluetooth profiles. A2DP is the common Classic Bluetooth profile for stereo music streaming. Verify that the source and receiver support the profiles needed for your intended use.
  4. Confirm the mode. Make sure the device can receive audio. If you need to send audio to headphones, check for transmitter mode instead.
  5. Verify any extra requirements on both devices. Check the specifications for a particular codec, microphone function, playback controls, latency, or connection to multiple devices. Support for these features is not universal.

How A2DP receivers differ from LE Audio broadcasts

A typical A2DP receiver adapter is for a Bluetooth Classic audio link. LE Audio and Auracast introduce different capabilities and use cases: Auracast, for example, allows one transmitter to broadcast audio to multiple receivers. Android documents audio sharing and broadcast audio as LE Audio use cases, with LC3 as the default codec in its documented Android context. Android Developers: Bluetooth Low Energy Audio
