A 3D laser printer is a machine that uses a laser to build an object from a digital design, usually by selectively fusing or curing material in layers. It is a broad description, not one specific printing technology: it can refer to powder-based processes such as polymer selective laser sintering (SLS) or metal laser powder-bed fusion (LPBF), resin-based stereolithography (SLA), or laser-directed deposition.
How a laser 3D printer works
In a powder-bed printer, a recoater spreads a thin layer of powder across the build area. A laser scans the locations belonging to that layer’s cross-section, fusing or sintering the material there. The build platform advances, another layer of powder is spread, and the laser scans the next cross-section. Repeating those steps builds the part layer by layer.

What the term can mean
Polymer SLS
Selective laser sintering (SLS) typically uses polymer powder. The laser sinters selected regions in successive powder layers to form a part. SLS is one type of laser 3D printing, not a synonym for all of it. A manufacturer describes polymer SLS applications in areas including medical, automotive, consumer electronics, education, and printing services; these are examples, not a complete survey of the market.

Metal LPBF
Laser powder-bed fusion (LPBF) is a broad label for metal additive manufacturing that fuses metal powder in layers with a laser. Terminology varies among technical contexts: terms such as selective laser melting and selective laser sintering are used for different powder-fusion cases, so the acronyms should not be treated as perfectly interchangeable. When identifying a machine or process, use its stated process name and material rather than relying on the phrase “3D laser printer.”
Laser stereolithography
Stereolithography (SLA) is a vat photopolymerization process. A laser selectively cures photosensitive liquid resin as the part is formed. It is laser-based, but it does not use a powder bed.

Laser-directed deposition
In laser-directed deposition, also associated with LENS equipment, powder is fed into a laser-created melt region. The process can deposit material onto a substrate or existing component, including to add a section or repair a part. It differs from building a part within a bed of powder.

- Polymer powder spread in layers: typically SLS.
- Metal powder fused in a bed: a metal powder-bed process such as LPBF; check the specific process terminology.
- Liquid photosensitive resin cured in a vat: SLA.
- Powder fed into a laser melt region: laser-directed deposition, which can add material to or repair an existing part.
An ordinary filament-extrusion printer is not a laser printer just because a laser is used in an unrelated accessory or measurement system. Describe the actual build process when it is known.

The phrase alone does not establish a printer’s material, suitable applications, cost, speed, strength, accuracy, or safety and facility requirements. Those depend on the particular process, machine, and job. For a machine comparison, first identify the process and feedstock; then assess part geometry, mechanical and surface requirements, throughput, cost, safety, facility needs, and post-processing. The process descriptions and application examples do not support a universal ranking of laser methods as cheaper, stronger, faster, or more accurate than one another.
