48V phantom power, or P48, is DC power sent through a balanced microphone cable, usually from an audio interface, mixer or preamp. Condenser microphones commonly use it to run their internal electronics; a correctly wired balanced dynamic microphone generally tolerates it. Passive ribbon microphones need more caution: check the model’s manual and leave P48 off unless its manufacturer permits it.
How 48V phantom power works
“Phantom” means the power travels on the same cable conductors as the audio rather than through a separate power lead. With a typical balanced XLR connection, the same DC voltage is applied to pins 2 and 3 relative to pin 1. Because the two signal conductors carry equal voltage, the balanced audio signal can still travel between them. Shure explains the pin arrangement, while Schoeps describes P48 as one of the phantom-power types defined under IEC 61938 and the most widely used today: Shure’s phantom-power explanation and Schoeps’ technical overview.

The label “phantom power” alone does not guarantee that every input supplies the same voltage or current under load. Portable and wireless equipment may not meet full standard voltage and current requirements in every circumstance, according to Schoeps. Check the microphone’s required voltage and current against the power source’s specifications.

Which microphones need or tolerate P48?
| Microphone type | Does it need P48? | Practical guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Condenser | Many models need phantom power for internal electronics; some designs also use it to polarize the capsule. | Check the model’s manual for its required voltage and current. Do not assume every condenser requires exactly 48 V. PreSonus and Shure describe common uses. |
| Balanced moving-coil dynamic | Usually no. | A correctly wired, intact balanced microphone is generally compatible because equal DC on its signal conductors creates no voltage difference across its output. Shure and beyerdynamic qualify this guidance by the wiring and condition of the microphone. |
| Unbalanced or incorrectly wired connection | Compatibility cannot be assumed. | Do not rely on the balanced-microphone rule. QSC warns that a dynamic microphone connected unbalanced to a phantom-powered input may be destroyed. QSC’s guidance explains the risk. |
| Passive ribbon | Usually no. | Keep P48 off unless the manufacturer permits it. Faulty wiring, hot-plugging and some vintage designs can make the connection risky. Neumann and Focusrite advise caution. |
| Active ribbon | Some models require phantom power for their electronics. | Do not apply the passive-ribbon rule to an active model. Follow that microphone’s manual; Neumann identifies active ribbons as an exception. Neumann’s connection guidance |
Specifications are model-specific. For example, HARMAN states that its C314 operates on standard 48 V ±4 V phantom power in accordance with IEC 61938; that specification applies to the C314, not to microphones generally. HARMAN’s C314 requirement

How to connect and switch phantom power safely
- Check the microphone manual for its power requirements and whether it permits phantom power. Confirm that the input or external supply provides compatible voltage and current.
- Turn phantom power off, then connect the microphone to the input with the appropriate balanced cable.
- Check whether the P48 control applies to one channel, a group of channels or all inputs. If it is grouped or global, account for every microphone connected to those inputs.
- Turn P48 on only after the microphones are connected. Allow the equipment to settle before recording.
- Before unplugging or changing a microphone, switch P48 off and disconnect only after it has been disabled.
These steps reduce the risk of noise or damage from connection faults and hot-plugging. Neumann and Focusrite both recommend connecting before enabling power and disabling it before disconnecting; Focusrite also notes that some interfaces apply power across multiple inputs. Use the interface, mixer or preamp’s built-in phantom power if it meets the microphone’s requirements. A separate unit is useful when the existing microphone input lacks compatible phantom power. Before choosing one, verify its output voltage and current, the number of channels it can power, and compatibility with the microphone. The Palmer PAN48 is one manufacturer-documented example of a two-channel P48 supply; it is an option, not a requirement when your existing equipment already provides suitable power.
