For most online multiplayer games, a stable connection matters more than a very high download speed. A broad consumer benchmark from HP is 5–10 Mbps download with ping under 50 ms for many games, but that is guidance—not a universal requirement. Prioritize low, steady latency, minimal packet loss, and enough capacity for everyone sharing your connection. Cloud gaming and livestreaming are important exceptions because they need more bandwidth, especially download capacity for cloud play and upload capacity for broadcasting.
How much internet speed do you need for online gaming?
For a single person playing a locally rendered multiplayer game, HP’s broad guide suggests 5–10 Mbps download and ping below 50 ms as a useful baseline. It is not a platform-wide guarantee or an independent industry standard: requirements vary by game, connection conditions, and what else is happening on your network.

Active gameplay often transfers relatively little data compared with video streaming or downloading a game. HP says most games use less than 1 Mbps during play. For a game-specific example, Bungie says Destiny may request up to 1 Mbps in both directions, while noting average use is considerably lower. Neither figure should be treated as a universal limit for every game.
Your household may need a faster plan if people are streaming video, joining calls, downloading updates, or backing up files while you play. Those activities compete for the connection’s capacity and can contribute to lag when the network is congested. A larger download tier can help with simultaneous use and shorten downloads; it does not automatically improve the route to a game server or reduce ping.

Which connection measurements matter?
| Measurement | What it tells you | Why it matters for gaming |
|---|---|---|
| Download speed | How quickly data arrives, usually measured in Mbps. | Helps with game and patch downloads, video streams, and household demand. A higher figure alone does not mean lower latency. |
| Upload speed | How quickly data leaves your home, usually measured in Mbps. | Supports sending game data and becomes especially important when livestreaming gameplay. |
| Ping or latency | Round-trip delay to a server, usually measured in milliseconds (ms). | Lower, more consistent delay generally makes real-time games feel more responsive. |
| Jitter | How much latency varies over time. | Repeated delay spikes can make play feel erratic, even if average ping looks good. |
| Packet loss | The share of data packets that fail to reach their destination. | Lost packets can interrupt or disrupt play. Wi-Fi interference and congestion are among the possible causes Bungie identifies for Destiny. |
HP’s guide describes under 50 ms as a general target for many games and under 30 ms as a competitive-play target. Treat these as orientation, not pass/fail cutoffs: the route to a particular server and consistency over time also matter. A speed test showing high Mbps does not by itself establish that a game connection is responsive.
Choose priorities for the way you play
| Use case | Prioritize | Guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Standard multiplayer on your own device | Stable ping and enough capacity for simultaneous household use. | HP’s 5–10 Mbps download benchmark can orient you, but actual needs depend on the game and other network activity. |
| Competitive shooter or fighting game | Low, consistent latency and minimal packet loss. | HP’s under-30-ms competitive target is a useful aim, not a universal boundary or a guarantee of better results. |
| Cloud gaming | Sustained download capacity and stability at your selected stream quality. | Check the chosen service’s current requirements. Openreach’s 2024 UK-facing guide gives a broad 10–45 Mbps range depending on service and quality; HP separately lists 15 Mbps minimum and 35–50 Mbps recommended. These secondary-source ranges differ, so they are not interchangeable service requirements. |
| Several people using the connection | Total simultaneous activity, including video, calls, backups, and downloads. | Estimate concurrent demand and leave headroom; one player’s game traffic does not represent the household’s full load. |
| Gameplay livestreaming | Upload capacity as well as latency. | Use the streaming platform’s current encoder and bitrate guidance for your chosen resolution and frame rate. |
| Unstable Wi-Fi | Signal quality, interference, congestion, and a wired comparison. | Try Ethernet first if practical; otherwise improve router placement and reduce competing wireless activity. |
Openreach’s 2024 UK-facing consumer guide lists 3 Mbps download and 0.5 Mbps upload for Xbox, and 5 Mbps or higher for PS5. These are figures from that guide, not guaranteed current requirements set by either console platform. Check the relevant platform or game’s current guidance for a specific setup.

How to troubleshoot lag before upgrading your plan
- Measure the connection near the gaming device. Run a connection test and note download, upload, and ping. If possible, compare an idle test with one taken while another device streams or downloads. HP recommends checking these measures before upgrading.
- Check the game’s server region. If the game lets you choose, select a nearby region. Intel explains that a shorter route can reduce the distance data travels and may lower ping.
- Pause competing traffic. Stop large downloads, backups, or streams temporarily and see whether play becomes steadier. If it does, congestion or competing use may be contributing to the problem.
- Test with Ethernet. Connect the gaming device to the router with a cable, then compare the experience. Bungie says, “For the best Destiny experience, Bungie recommends players use a wired internet connection instead of WiFi.” This is Bungie’s advice for Destiny; a cable can improve the device-to-router link but cannot guarantee lower latency on the wider internet path or to a game server.
- Compare at different times. If problems persist, repeat tests at different times and contact your ISP or game support as appropriate. A speed plan cannot guarantee routing quality, low server load, or stable latency.
If Ethernet is impractical, try moving closer to the router, repositioning it in an open central area, or reducing competing wireless traffic. A router with quality-of-service (QoS) controls may help prioritize traffic on some busy home networks, but it is conditional—not a necessary purchase or guaranteed gaming-speed upgrade.

Consider more capacity if several people regularly use bandwidth-heavy services at once, if large downloads disrupt other household activity, or if cloud gaming needs more sustained throughput than your current connection provides. For ordinary multiplayer, first identify whether the problem is low capacity, Wi-Fi instability, or latency beyond your home network: those problems call for different fixes.

When comparing plans, look at advertised download and upload speeds and assess whether the plan can handle your household’s simultaneous use. Also test the connection under the conditions in which you play. More Mbps can relieve a capacity bottleneck, but it cannot ensure a short route to a server, fix a distant or overloaded server, or eliminate every source of packet loss.
