For one HD live-soccer stream, aim for at least 13 Mbps of stable download speed available to the TV or streaming device. That is a conservative planning target based on provider guidance—not a universal soccer requirement or a guarantee against buffering. Netflix, Hulu, and YouTube TV publish different thresholds, and the speed that matters is what reaches your viewing device while the match is playing.
How much internet speed should you plan for?
Use 13 Mbps as a practical HD target if other devices may be using your home network. YouTube TV lists 7 Mbps for one HD stream but recommends 13 Mbps for reliable HD when other devices are using the network. Hulu’s US guidance recommends 8 Mbps for live streams. These are service-specific recommendations, not a single standard for live soccer.

The right figure depends on the service, resolution, and what else is happening on your network. The numbers below come from the providers’ help pages, accessed October 7, 2026; those pages do not state publication years.

|---|---|---|
| Netflix, 720p HD | 3 Mbps or higher | Netflix-specific baseline; not a general live-sports target. |
| Netflix, 1080p Full HD | 5 Mbps or higher | Netflix-specific guidance. |
| Netflix, 4K UHD | 15 Mbps or higher | Applies to 4K content on Netflix; it does not mean a soccer match is available in 4K. |
| YouTube TV, one HD stream | 7 Mbps or higher | Platform estimate for one HD stream. |
| YouTube TV, reliable HD with other device use | 13 Mbps or higher | A more useful planning benchmark for a busy household. |
| YouTube TV, available 4K programming | 25 Mbps or higher | For 4K Plus subscribers and eligible programming. |
| Hulu, live streams in the US | 8 Mbps | Hulu’s live-stream recommendation; additional activity may require more. |
| Hulu, 4K | 16 Mbps | Hulu’s stated 4K recommendation. |
The 13 Mbps HD target synthesizes these service-specific recommendations; it is not an independent test result. For 4K, YouTube TV recommends 25 Mbps for eligible programming, while Netflix lists 15 Mbps and Hulu 16 Mbps for their own 4K content. Check whether the particular match, subscription, and device support the resolution you want.

Why your advertised plan speed may not be enough
A broadband plan’s advertised maximum is not necessarily the speed available at the TV during a match. Other household traffic can compete for capacity, and Wi-Fi interference or a weak, unstable connection can disrupt playback even when the plan’s headline speed seems sufficient.
Google’s YouTube TV Help notes: “Internet congestion, Wi-Fi interference, and other factors may also cause live programming issues, which can delay the stream.” Netflix likewise identifies a weak or unstable connection as a possible cause of buffering. Neither service’s recommendation guarantees uninterrupted viewing under every network or service condition.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
There is no established universal speed margin, latency target, or upload-speed requirement for ordinary one-way soccer viewing in the cited provider guidance. Focus on the service’s requirements and the actual, stable download speed reaching the viewing device.
What to do if the match keeps buffering
- Check speed where the problem occurs. Run a speed check while playback is affected, on or near the TV’s network connection. A phone tested elsewhere in the home may have different Wi-Fi conditions. Netflix provides a connection check in its app and recommends checking speed.
- Reduce competing network activity. Pause large downloads and other streams during the match, then check whether playback improves. YouTube TV identifies simultaneous network use as a possible cause of buffering.
- Improve the Wi-Fi signal. Move the router and streaming device closer together, place the router in an open location off the floor, and reduce nearby interference. These are among Netflix’s suggested signal-improvement steps.
- Try Ethernet if your device supports it. A direct wired connection may help; YouTube says hardwiring can improve connectivity. An Ethernet cable is optional and only useful if the TV or streaming device has a compatible port and the cable can reach the router. It does not raise your subscribed broadband speed.
- Restart and update. Restart the streaming device and home network, then check for device software updates. If several devices have trouble or measured speed is consistently below the service’s recommendation, contact your internet provider.
When a speed test does not explain the problem
If the measured speed at the TV meets the provider’s recommendation but buffering continues, the test alone cannot rule out an unstable connection, device problem, network congestion, or a streaming-service fault. Try the connection and device steps above; if the issue persists, check the service’s support guidance and whether other devices or services are affected.
