Amazon’s published baseline for 4K Ultra HD streaming on Fire TV is a high-speed internet connection of at least 15 Mbps. Netflix also specifies a stable connection of at least 15 Mbps for Ultra HD on Fire TV, while Amazon notes that some apps, including Netflix, recommend at least 20 Mbps. These are published thresholds, not guarantees: your Fire TV model, display, HDMI path, subscription and connection stability also affect whether you can watch in 4K.
How much speed does 4K streaming need?
Amazon’s Fire TV guidance says 4K Ultra HD requires at least 15 Mbps. It also says some video apps recommend at least 20 Mbps; that is an app recommendation, not Amazon’s general Fire TV minimum. Amazon Fire TV Help

Netflix’s Fire TV Ultra HD requirements state that a stable connection of at least 15 Mbps is required. Because the two pages frame the figures differently, treat 15 Mbps as the published baseline and check the specific app’s requirements rather than assuming one speed applies to every streaming service. A speed-test result above a threshold does not ensure uninterrupted 4K playback. Netflix explicitly calls for a stable connection, and neither source promises that a particular speed will prevent buffering in every home.

What else must be compatible?
Fire TV Stick model
Not every device called a Fire TV Stick supports 4K. Netflix lists Fire TV Stick 4K as Ultra HD capable, and Amazon’s device comparison includes both 4K and non-4K generations. Check the exact model before troubleshooting speed. Netflix Help Center · Amazon device comparison
TV and HDMI path
You need an Ultra HD television. Amazon also requires HDCP 2.2 support on the relevant HDMI-connected home-theater devices. If the Fire TV Stick runs through a receiver or soundbar, that part of the HDMI path matters too; a compatible TV alone may not be enough. Amazon says Fire TV may notify you if it does not detect HDCP 2.2. Amazon Fire TV Help

App plan and playback setting
For Netflix Ultra HD, the account must have a subscription plan that includes Ultra HD, and Netflix recommends setting playback quality to Auto or High. Requirements can differ by service, so check the app you are using rather than applying Netflix’s plan requirement to every app. Netflix Help Center

- Review the app’s quality setting. Netflix directs users to choose Auto or High quality for Ultra HD playback.
- Check connection stability at the Fire TV Stick. A speed test elsewhere in the home may not establish that the device itself has a stable connection.
- Set Fire TV resolution to Auto. Amazon directs users to use Auto resolution when troubleshooting Ultra HD compatibility.
Amazon’s and Netflix’s setup requirements are detailed in their respective help pages: Amazon Fire TV Help and Netflix Help Center.

A Fire TV Stick 4K is relevant if your current stick does not support Ultra HD, but a new stick cannot raise your broadband speed or fix an unstable Wi-Fi connection by itself. It also cannot make a non-Ultra-HD TV or incompatible HDMI equipment meet the 4K requirements. Check the device, display, HDMI path, account and connection before replacing hardware.
