If a game reports that it has run out of video memory, lower texture quality first, then test other demanding graphics settings. If the game stutters without showing that warning, do not assume VRAM is the cause: shader compilation, the GPU in use, and other system resources can also matter. Work through the checks below before deciding whether you need different hardware.
What the warning and stutter can mean
Video memory, or VRAM, is memory the GPU uses for graphics assets such as textures and shaders. Higher texture settings can increase the amount needed. AMD explains how VRAM supports game and application rendering in its Radeon VRAM overview.

An “out of video memory” warning and a stutter are not interchangeable diagnoses. A warning may point to graphics-memory demand, but a hitch by itself does not prove the GPU has run out of VRAM. NVIDIA identifies shader compilation as a common cause of gameplay stuttering in its Manage 3D Settings reference.
Try these troubleshooting steps in order
-
Lower texture quality, then retest
Reduce texture quality in the game’s graphics settings and play the same scene or repeat the action that triggered the warning. If the problem continues, lower other demanding options one at a time, such as resolution or ray tracing if enabled. Changing one setting at a time helps show whether graphics-memory demand affects the symptom; it is not a guaranteed fix.

Check Windows resource use and close unused apps
Close programs you do not need while playing. Open Task Manager and observe resource use while the game is running, particularly when the hitch or warning occurs. Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance also recommends checking for Windows updates and monitoring resources. These are general performance checks, not proof that a background app caused a particular game’s stutter.
-
Make sure the game is using the intended GPU
On a Windows 11 system with multiple GPUs, check whether the game has an app-specific graphics preference and, if appropriate, select the high-performance option. Microsoft documents this option in its Windows 11 graphics guidance. Availability and behavior depend on the device and Windows configuration. Save the preference and restart the game before testing.

Account for shared memory on integrated graphics
Integrated graphics use system memory shared with the graphics controller, rather than relying only on a discrete GPU’s dedicated VRAM. AMD describes this unified memory architecture (UMA) in its guidance on UMA frame-buffer size on desktop systems with integrated graphics. In some situations, shared-memory graphics can be associated with missing or low-resolution textures or a GPU-requirements warning.

Consider whether stutter followed a driver update
NVIDIA says shader compilation commonly happens as a game runs and can cause stutter. Its control-panel reference also notes that installing a driver deletes the shader cache, so the first game run afterward may stutter. That is one possible explanation, not a reason to dismiss persistent or severe stuttering as harmless.
Do not apply an old Windows hotfix to a modern system
Microsoft documented a specific DirectX 11 “out of memory” issue in Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2 when a game ran fullscreen at a non-native resolution. The support article describes a targeted hotfix for that older scenario: Microsoft’s support page for the DirectX 11 error. It is not a general fix for current Windows 10 or Windows 11 gaming problems.

When a GPU upgrade may make sense
Consider an upgrade only after testing settings and checking which GPU the game uses. If lower settings resolve the problem but you want to play at higher textures, resolution, or ray tracing settings, a GPU with more suitable dedicated VRAM may be worth considering. VRAM capacity alone does not determine overall performance or compatibility, and there is no universal amount that fits every game and settings combination.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCompare cards against the game and resolution you actually use, your target settings, dedicated VRAM capacity, overall GPU performance, system compatibility, and budget. AMD reports that its performance labs measured a peak of 11.7 GB VRAM usage in Far Cry 6 at native 1440p with maximum settings and ray tracing enabled. AMD gives the test date as June 28, 2023, and lists a Ryzen 9 7900X, 32 GB DDR5-4800, Windows 10 Pro, Radeon RX 6950 XT, Adrenalin Edition v23.7.1, and Smart Access Memory as the test configuration. This is a specific AMD vendor test, not a general minimum requirement or an independent comparison.

What information helps identify the cause
If the steps do not clarify the problem, record the game title, GPU model, dedicated VRAM, system RAM, resolution, graphics settings, Windows version, driver version, and exact warning or error text. Note whether the issue began after a driver update and whether it happens in one game or several. Those details help distinguish a graphics-memory limit from a configuration issue or another performance bottleneck.
