Intel Foundry is Intel’s manufacturing and related-services business. It makes chips for Intel’s own product groups and is building a business serving outside customers with wafer manufacturing and advanced packaging. For buyers, that can influence which chips reach products, when they arrive, and the manufacturing and supply-chain tradeoffs behind them—but a foundry name or process-node label alone does not tell you how well a particular laptop or processor will perform.
What does Intel Foundry do?
Intel’s manufacturing organization produces silicon for Intel products while also seeking external customers. Intel calls its operating approach an “internal foundry” model: product groups inside Intel are meant to engage with manufacturing much as an outside chip designer would engage with a contract foundry. The aim is to make manufacturing costs, performance, and accountability more visible to those product groups and to external customers.

For outside customers, the offer is broader than making a wafer. Intel describes a “systems foundry” combining process technology, advanced packaging, design enablement, intellectual-property support, electronic-design-automation (EDA) tools and ecosystem support, and manufacturing. A customer can therefore work with Intel on multiple stages of getting a chip designed and produced, although the specific services and readiness depend on the project and process.
What is Intel 18A, and what is its status?
Intel 18A is a manufacturing process in Intel’s roadmap. Intel reported in June 2026 that 18A entered production in 2025 and that Intel 18A-P had entered risk production. Intel describes 18A-P as a compatible performance enhancement to the 18A family. “Risk production” is a development and manufacturing milestone; it should not be read as evidence that a process is already shipping at broad commercial scale.

In its June 2026 technical announcement, Intel reported the following comparisons for 18A-P versus 18A. These are Intel’s claims, not independent comparative test results:
| Intel-reported 18A-P comparison | What Intel said | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Performance or power | 9% higher performance at iso-power, or 18% lower power at iso-performance | Intel’s June 2026 comparison with Intel 18A; not an independent benchmark |
| Thermal resistance | 20–40% improved | Intel’s June 2026 technical announcement |
| Via resistance | 10–30% improved | Intel’s June 2026 technical announcement |
In comments on Intel’s fourth-quarter 2025 earnings call, the company said it was shipping its first 18A products, yields were improving, and more work remained to ramp supply. Those statements describe Intel’s position at that time; they do not establish current yield, available capacity, or delivery timing for a particular customer.

Does Intel make chips for other companies?
Intel has announced outside-customer plans, but an announced design or customer relationship is not the same as proof of volume production.

- Microsoft: Intel announced that Microsoft had chosen a chip design it planned to produce on Intel 18A.
- Amazon Web Services (AWS): Intel announced plans for an AI fabric chip on 18A and a custom Xeon 6 chip on Intel 3. Intel described the AWS arrangement as a multi-year, multi-billion-dollar framework covering products and wafers.
Intel’s 2024 announcement also said it expected more than $15 billion in lifetime deal value across wafer manufacturing and advanced packaging. That was Intel’s forecast at the time—not booked revenue or a current audited figure.

Intel’s fourth-quarter 2025 call comments described active engagement with potential external customers for Intel 14A and said supplier decisions might occur across the second half of 2026 and first half of 2027. That is a window Intel discussed, not confirmation that customers selected the process. The same call addressed ongoing work to improve packaging quality and yield.
Why does Intel’s foundry business matter to chip buyers?
Most buyers do not choose a foundry directly. Its effects reach them through the finished chips and devices available to buy, and through the timing, packaging, capacity, and supply-chain options behind those products.

- Product capability: Process technology and packaging can shape the design options available to a chip maker. They do not, on their own, establish a finished processor’s speed, battery life, or value.
- Availability and timing: Manufacturing capacity and yield affect how quickly a design can become a product in meaningful volume. Intel’s statements about improving yields and ramping supply show why a process milestone alone cannot answer whether a product will be readily available.
- More manufacturing options: Intel is trying to serve both its internal product groups and outside chip designers. If that model works, customers may have another manufacturing and packaging supplier to consider. The announcements above establish plans and engagement, not the eventual scale or results of that business.
- Supply-chain geography: Intel presents U.S. manufacturing and government programs as part of its supply-chain offer. Intel also described U.S. defense-industry access to 18A and packaging through the RAMP-C and Secure Enclave initiatives; those programs are relevant context, but do not guarantee consumer-product delivery.
Intel says Core Ultra Series 3 processors were its first products manufactured using Intel 18A. That makes the processor family a concrete example of 18A reaching a product, but buyers should verify the processor and manufacturing details for the exact laptop model they are considering rather than assume every Intel laptop uses 18A.

For businesses evaluating foundries, useful questions include whether the process is in demonstrated production, what evidence exists for yield and capacity, whether design tools and IP are ready, what packaging options are available, how firm customer commitments are, where manufacturing is located, and what the total economics are. The Intel statements cited here do not provide a balanced cross-foundry comparison of yield, pricing, or performance, so they cannot establish that Intel is ahead of or cheaper than an alternative.
Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan summarized the company’s stated customer focus at Foundry Direct Connect on April 29, 2025: “Our No. 1 job is to listen to our customers and earn their trust by creating solutions to enable their success.” That is Intel’s ambition; buyers and chip designers will ultimately judge it by production results, supply, and the products those capabilities enable.
