If your income rises more slowly than the prices you face, your purchasing power falls. But the national inflation rate is an average—not a measurement of what happened to every household’s bills.
What inflation means for your budget
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) defines the Consumer Price Index (CPI) as the average change over time in prices paid for a representative basket of consumer goods and services. Inflation is the rate of that price change. When the rate is positive, prices are still rising; a lower rate means they are rising more slowly, not that prices have returned to an earlier level. Falling prices across the relevant goods and services would be deflation. BLS explains CPI and its use in measuring real income.

Purchasing power is what a given amount of money can buy. As prices rise, the same dollars buy fewer goods and services. BLS puts it this way: “The purchasing power of the consumer’s dollar measures the change in the value to the consumer of goods and services that a dollar will buy at different dates.” See the BLS CPI FAQ.

Your nominal income is the dollar amount you receive. Your real income adjusts that amount for price changes. If your income grows more slowly than prices, your real income—and the amount your pay can buy—declines. If income keeps pace with the prices relevant to your spending, purchasing power may be broadly maintained, though individual expenses still vary. BLS describes the distinction between nominal and real income.

A real-income example
In a BLS illustration, nominal income stays at $50,000 while CPI-U rises 2.7% from December 2024 to December 2025. After adjusting for that price increase, the income is equivalent to $48,696.36 in the earlier period’s dollars. This is an illustration of how the adjustment works, not a wage forecast or a calculation of any particular household’s finances. BLS provides the example in its purchasing-power factsheet.
A historical purchasing-power example
BLS illustrates the change between 2021 and 2022 by showing that a basket costing $500 in December 2021 would have cost $532.50 in December 2022, a period in which the dollar’s purchasing power declined about 7.4%. These are historical figures, not current prices. See the BLS factsheet.

Why the national inflation rate may not match your experience
CPI-U measures price changes for a target population of urban consumers; it is not a personal cost-of-living index. No single published rate captures every household’s particular mix of housing, food, energy, transportation, health care, and other spending. If your household spends a larger-than-average share on a category whose prices are rising quickly, your own costs may rise faster than the headline average; a different spending mix can produce a different result. BLS explains the CPI population and household-basket limits.

The Bureau of Economic Analysis reported a 3.4% increase over the year through August 2026 on its September 30, 2026 release page. CPI and PCE are distinct measures with different scope and methods, so their figures should not be treated as interchangeable or as a household-specific rate. See the BEA release.

- Gather several months of records. Review bank and credit-card statements, receipts, or a spending log to see what you actually paid in major categories. CFPB budgeting guidance suggests tracking spending with records, receipts, or a notebook.
- Make a monthly plan using take-home income. Write down income and expenses, including irregular costs and savings contributions. Consumer.gov describes a budget as a written monthly plan and offers a worksheet. Use the consumer.gov budget guide.
- Compare spending by category. Look at actual amounts against the prior period or your plan. Start with the categories taking the largest share of your budget; a national index may not reveal your biggest pressure point.
- Track a regular household basket if you want a personal comparison. Record the prices or amounts paid for the goods and services your household routinely buys, using a notebook, receipts, bank history, or a spending tool. This can show how your own costs change over time, but it is not an official CPI statistic. CFPB offers spending trackers, bill calendars, cash-flow worksheets, and savings-plan tools in its Your Money, Your Goals toolkit.
- Compare income changes with expense changes. Looking at both sides of the household budget helps distinguish a squeeze caused by prices rising faster than income from other changes in earnings or spending.
