No. Incognito mode mainly limits what your browser keeps on your device after you close the private window; it does not make you anonymous or stop a website from collecting information that can help identify your browser. Fingerprinting uses details about your browser and device, not just cookies, so clearing session data is not enough to prevent it.
What Incognito mode protects—and what it does not
Private browsing is useful when you want to reduce traces left on a shared device. Chrome and Firefox private modes erase local session information after the private window closes, according to the Tor Project’s comparison of Tor Browser and private browsing. It does not erase information a website has already received.

As the Tor Project puts it, “While the names may imply otherwise, ‘Incognito mode’ and ‘private tabs’ do not make you anonymous on the Internet.” Websites can still observe activity during a session. An employer or school managing the network, or your internet provider, may also be able to see network activity. If you sign in to an account, activity can be associated with that account. Mozilla explains these limits in its private browsing guidance.

- Private window: reduces the browsing history and session data retained locally after you close it.
- Website: may still receive browser and device signals while you visit.
- Network: private mode alone does not conceal your activity from the network operator or internet provider.
How browser fingerprinting works
A fingerprint is a combination of characteristics that can help distinguish one browser and its environment from others. MDN lists examples such as browser version, timezone, preferred language, available audio and video codecs, installed fonts, browser settings, and display size or resolution. Websites can use JavaScript and CSS to collect some of these details and combine them into a fingerprint. See MDN’s explanation of fingerprinting.

WebKit describes fingerprinting, also called stateless tracking, as tracking based on properties of a person’s behavior and computing environment without explicit client-side storage. Its examples include fonts, the user-agent string, GPU and CPU details, IP address, and TLS connection. That is why a site may be able to recognize a browser without relying on a cookie. WebKit outlines this tracking category in its tracking-prevention guidance.
Why deleting cookies does not remove a fingerprint
Cookies are stored identifiers; fingerprinting combines characteristics that a site can observe. Deleting cookies can remove cookie-based identifiers, but it does not automatically change browser version, fonts, display settings, or other signals. EFF distinguishes these mechanisms in its Cover Your Tracks guidance.

Changing one setting is not a guaranteed fix. A combination of uncommon settings can make a browser stand out more rather than blend in. Fingerprinting is about the combined pattern, so there is no universal “spoof this one value” solution.
Private-browsing protections vary by browser
Incognito and private browsing are not standardized promises to block trackers. According to EFF’s current guidance, Firefox Private Browsing blocks known trackers on its protection list, as well as known fingerprinters and cryptominers; this cannot guarantee protection from new or unlisted trackers. EFF says Chrome Incognito does not itself protect against trackers or fingerprinters. These are browser-specific descriptions, and behavior can change with browser versions; check the current settings and documentation for the browser you use.

What you can do to reduce tracking
Use built-in tracking protections
Enable the protections available in your browser and understand their scope: blocking known tracker sources is not the same as preventing every fingerprinting technique. Review the browser’s current privacy settings, since features and defaults vary.
Consider a browser designed to reduce fingerprintability
EFF describes Tor Browser as designed to help users blend into a larger group, while Brave randomizes certain fingerprint characteristics. The Tor Project says Tor Browser includes protections that ordinary private tabs do not. Neither approach should be treated as a guarantee of perfect anonymity; see the Tor Project’s comparison and EFF’s guidance for their descriptions.

Do not mistake a VPN for an anti-fingerprinting tool
A VPN changes the network route and the IP context visible to a site. Fingerprinting can also rely on browser and device properties, so changing the network route does not by itself make those signals disappear. MDN and WebKit describe network and browser/device properties as distinct possible inputs to tracking.
Weigh the cost of disabling JavaScript
Disabling JavaScript can reduce some information available to a site, but EFF cautions that it can break or limit many websites. Forms, shopping features, video, and other interactive functions may not work as expected. Mozilla also notes that aggressive blocking can interfere with legitimate features such as calendars and conferencing that rely on an accurate time zone.

What Mozilla’s 2025 Firefox finding means
On November 10, 2025, Mozilla wrote: “Our research shows these improvements cut the percentage of users seen as unique by almost half.” The statement describes Mozilla’s research on Firefox’s expanded defenses, which debuted in Private Browsing and Enhanced Tracking Protection Strict mode. It is not a universal guarantee that Firefox users cannot be fingerprinted, nor a cross-browser measurement of any individual reader’s risk. Read Mozilla’s Firefox fingerprinting protections announcement.
Choose protections by the problem they solve
There is no single privacy switch that covers every kind of exposure. Consider what you want to limit and what each measure actually changes:
Quick Recap
| Protection or choice | What it addresses | What it does not guarantee |
|---|---|---|
| Incognito or private window | Reduces locally retained session data after closure. | Does not by itself hide activity from websites, network operators, or an internet provider. |
| Tracker protection | Can block known tracker sources; coverage depends on the browser and its lists. | Does not guarantee blocking new or unlisted trackers or every fingerprinting method. |
| Fingerprinting defenses | May reduce distinctive signals or make users less distinguishable. | Do not establish perfect anonymity; aggressive settings can disrupt legitimate features. |
| VPN | Changes the network route and visible IP context. | Does not by itself remove browser or device fingerprint signals. |
