What Identity Agents Do and How They Authenticate AI Workflows

AI agents should use distinct workload identities and narrowly scoped credentials. Here’s how authentication, authorization, delegation, and audit fit together—and what current standards do and don’t establish.

An AI agent should have its own workload identity, not your password or an anonymous application credential. When it calls a tool, the receiving service needs to establish which workload is making the request, decide what that workload may do, and—if it is acting for a person—record the delegation that authorizes the action. In practice, that means combining workload identity, suitable credentials, authorization policy, and audit rather than relying on a shared secret.

What “identity” means for an AI agent

An agent is not simply the model that produced its response. A model’s identity does not automatically identify a deployed agent running in a cloud service, container, local computer, or managed platform. The agent workload needs an identity of its own so services can distinguish it from other workloads and from the people who operate or delegate to it.

  • Identity names or represents the workload or principal that is making a request.
  • Authentication gives the receiving service evidence that the requester is the identity it claims to be.
  • Authorization determines whether that identity may perform a particular action on a particular resource.
  • Delegation records that an agent is acting under a user’s or organization’s authority, rather than silently inheriting a person’s credentials.
  • Audit preserves a trace of what happened, including the agent and the relevant user or organizational principal.

These functions are related but not interchangeable. A valid credential can authenticate an agent without granting it permission to use every tool. A policy can limit an action, but it cannot by itself establish which workload sent the request.

How an agent authenticates to a tool

Authentication happens at a trust boundary: for example, when an agent runtime calls an API, database, or other tool. The runtime obtains a credential or assertion it is permitted to use; the resource service checks it against an identity provider or other trust arrangement; and an authorization policy evaluates the requested operation and resource. If the request is delegated, the system should be able to relate the agent’s action to the user or organization whose authority it is exercising.

  1. Identify the running workload. Establish which deployed agent instance or service is making the call. The identity should represent the workload, not merely the underlying model or a shared application.
  2. Provide evidence for that identity. The runtime presents a cryptographic credential or assertion accepted by the receiving service. The appropriate mechanism depends on the deployment and the trust boundary.
  3. Evaluate the requested action. The service checks the principal, operation, resource, and applicable policy. Authentication is not a grant of permission.
  4. Represent delegated authority explicitly. If the agent is acting for a person, the authorization flow should express that relationship and limit the resulting authority to what is needed.
  5. Record the event. Logs and related audit data should make it possible to connect the action to the agent and, where relevant, the delegating user or organization.

The practical answer to “How do I give an AI agent access to tools without handing it my credentials?” is to give the workload a distinct identity and have the tool accept a narrowly authorized credential or delegated grant for that identity. Do not copy a person’s password, session token, or broad API key into the agent’s configuration or prompt.

Which identity and authorization mechanisms do what?

Several mechanisms can appear in one workflow because they address different parts of the problem. NIST’s February 2026 concept paper describes OAuth as an authorization standard for generating, protecting, and delivering authorization tokens. It describes OpenID Connect (OIDC) as an interoperable authentication protocol based on OAuth 2.0 that can express authentication, consent, and authorization information through identity tokens. The paper says OAuth is integrated into MCP as its primary method for authorizing agentic access and that the referenced MCP specification follows draft OAuth 2.1; that describes the status covered by the paper, not uniform behavior across every MCP server. Read the NIST NCCoE concept paper.

Mechanism Role in an agent workflow What it does not settle on its own
SPIFFE Provides a framework for cryptographic workload identity, including X.509-SVID and JWT-SVID profiles exposed through the SPIFFE Workload API. It does not decide which tools or operations the workload is authorized to use; policy must make that decision.
SPIRE An implementation that provides APIs for workload attestation, helping establish workload identity in a running environment. Attestation and identity do not replace resource-side authorization or audit.
OAuth Conveys authorization grants and delegated access through tokens; it is not authentication alone. A token’s existence does not mean every resource or operation should accept it.
OIDC Provides authentication information through identity tokens in an OAuth 2.0-based protocol. An identity assertion is not a substitute for a policy decision about the requested action.
Policy and audit systems Constrain permitted actions and preserve records that help explain which principal acted and under what authority. They need trustworthy identity and request context to evaluate and record meaningfully.

The SPIFFE Workload API describes the X.509-SVID and JWT-SVID profiles, which implementations must support, although an operator may disable a profile administratively. The SPIFFE Workload API specification and SPIFFE Workload Endpoint specification also make runtime access and bootstrap part of the security design. The endpoint specification recommends a local endpoint, says the same endpoint instance should not be exposed to more than one host, specifies gRPC, and prefers Unix Domain Socket transport; TCP use is subject to conditions in the specification. Those are operational boundary considerations, not just format choices.

Design access without sharing a person’s credentials

A robust design treats credentials as limited, replaceable evidence of authority rather than permanent passwords embedded in an agent. NIST warns that long-lived API keys and bearer tokens may be used by anyone who obtains them, can grant overly broad access, and may be left in configuration files, Markdown files, or logs. Possession of a bearer token alone does not prove that the presenter is the intended agent.

  • Prefer short-lived credentials over secrets that remain valid indefinitely, where the platform supports them.
  • Restrict scope and audience. Limit a credential to the resources and operations it needs, and to the intended recipient service.
  • Make credentials revocable and plan how access will be removed when an agent or deployment is retired.
  • Protect secrets from prompts, configuration, and logs. Do not place long-lived keys where an agent can expose or reproduce them.
  • Consider proof of possession. Sender-constrained approaches such as DPoP may be appropriate in supported systems; unlike an unconstrained bearer token, they are intended to bind use to a key.
  • Keep user delegation distinct from workload identity. The agent should remain identifiable as the actor even when a user’s permissions are part of the authorization context.

NIST’s summary of comments discusses a possible broader stack connecting workload identity, OAuth, policy decisions, metadata, and provenance. It describes combinations that may include WIMSE/SPIFFE workload authentication, OAuth client authentication, mutual TLS, HTTP signatures, and attestation. Its discussion of OAuth identity chaining, token exchange, and attenuated-token proposals supports a design principle—make delegation explicit, scoped, and traceable—but these comments and proposals are not a settled mandatory architecture. See the NIST NCCoE summary of comments.

Use human approval selectively

Human approval can be useful when an action is consequential or difficult to reverse, but it is not a replacement for authentication or authorization policy. NIST warns that agents that ask too often can condition people to click “allow” reflexively, reducing the value of approval and weakening accountability. A request should make the action and affected resource understandable to the reviewer. There is no universal prompt frequency established by the cited guidance; approval design depends on the product, deployment, and risks involved.

Compare identity architectures against the actual deployment

A design that works for a hosted cloud agent may not fit an agent running on a local computer or across a hybrid environment. NIST notes that infrastructure choices affect how an agent can be identified, authenticated, and authorized, and that local deployments will persist alongside cloud deployments. Use these questions to compare options:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Does each agent workload have a distinct identity, separate from users and neighboring workloads?
  • How long do credentials last, what scope and audience do they have, and can use be bound to proof of possession?
  • Can grants be revoked, and is cleanup included when an agent or runtime is decommissioned?
  • Can the system express user delegation explicitly and trace the resulting action back to the relevant principal?
  • Does the runtime support suitable attestation, and where are its bootstrap and credential-delivery boundaries?
  • Can policy constrain the exact operation and resource rather than granting broad tool access?
  • Do audit and provenance records preserve enough context to explain which agent acted and under whose authority?
  • Does the approach work across the actual cloud, local, or hybrid environments in use?

Product examples are implementation-specific

Google Cloud documents a managed Agent Identity implementation in which an agent has a unique SPIFFE ID tied to its hosted resource. Its documented credentials include X.509 certificates, Google Cloud access tokens, and OIDC ID tokens. The overview describes default mutual TLS to Google Cloud APIs, DPoP for interactions through its Agent Gateway, OAuth delegation through an auth manager, and audit integration. These are Google Cloud product details, not requirements of SPIFFE or a universal agent architecture. Google also warns that deleting an agent does not automatically remove IAM bindings that refer to its identity, so administrators need to clean up those grants during decommissioning. Agent identity standards are still developing

The National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (NCCoE) says its project is exploring standards-based ways to identify, manage, and authorize software and AI agents and to provide practical implementation guidance. Its project description states: “The NCCoE is interested in exploring standards-based approaches to identify, manage, and authorize access and actions taken by software agents, including AI agents, and provide practical guidelines for organizations to securely implement AI agents and benefit from their improved productivity, efficiency, and decision-making.” The project page says feedback will inform subsequent planning. NIST’s concept paper was published in February 2026. In an August 27, 2026 blog post, NIST describes established standards such as OAuth 2.0 and SPIFFE as a starting point while emerging work, including WIMSE and agent-related authorization work, develops. The comments summary includes drafts and proposals; these should not be treated as final standards. The cited sources do not establish a single finalized, universal standard for AI agent identity.
