In an October 2026 Reddit AMA, IBM Security’s Jeff Crume and Guido Crucq discussed breach response times, defensive uses of AI, access to breach data, and skills for AI security careers. Their replies offer useful perspectives, but the thread is not a reproduction of IBM’s Cost of a Data Breach Report: it does not identify the report edition or provide its headline cost, methodology, or tables.
What did the guests say about breach response times?
Jeff Crume said that, over roughly the preceding decade, mean time to identify a breach had generally been about 200 days, while mean time to contain it had been more than 60 days. These are approximate figures from Crume’s October 2026 AMA reply, not independently verified current benchmarks or figures presented with the report’s methodology. He also said he did not have data breaking the timelines out by breach vector.

The two measures describe different stages: identifying a breach is not the same as containing it. Crume’s comments suggest that both stages can take substantial time, but the AMA does not provide enough detail to compare particular attack vectors or establish why the delays occur.

Potential defensive uses
Guido Crucq described AI as useful for fast, consistent analysis at scale in security tools and security operations center (SOC) work. Crume offered an example of an AI agent researching indicators of compromise and recommending a response. These were descriptions of potential uses, not measured results: the thread provides no effectiveness data or evidence that a particular deployment reduces breach costs or response times.

Why autonomous response needs safeguards
Crume warned that an agent could be hijacked through prompt injection and turned against the defenders. He cautioned against letting agents automate response without care. The practical distinction is between using AI to analyze evidence or propose actions and allowing it to make consequential changes on its own. The AMA does not specify a control design, but the risk he identifies makes human review and tightly bounded permissions important considerations before granting an agent authority over security systems.
Does the AMA provide a public dataset of breaches?
No raw breach dataset is identified in the replies. Crucq said, “I am not aware of such datasets,” adding that data prepared for publication would need to be scrubbed and anonymized. That is a statement about his knowledge in the AMA, not proof that no public dataset exists. The thread also does not describe what data IBM used for its report beyond the introduction’s broad reference to hundreds of real-world breaches; it gives no exact count, sample period, or edition.
What skills should someone build for a career in AI security?
Understand the system before looking for failure modes
Crume’s advice was to understand how AI systems are meant to work, then examine how they can fail. He also pointed to the confidentiality, integrity, and availability triad—the familiar security goals of protecting information from unauthorized disclosure, preserving its accuracy and trustworthiness, and keeping systems and data usable when needed. Applied to AI security, that means learning the system’s intended behavior and data flows before assessing how weaknesses could affect those goals.
Connect technical controls to business risk
Crucq emphasized architecture, controls, governance, and understanding cyber risk and investment in business context. This broadens the work beyond identifying a technical weakness: practitioners also need to understand what the system supports, which risks matter to the organization, and how governance and controls address them.

Together, the guests’ advice pairs technical understanding with organizational judgment. Neither named a specific course, certification, or credential, so the AMA should not be read as endorsing one.

The event description says the Cost of a Data Breach Report examines what drives breach costs, how attack trends evolve, and which investments may make a difference. The thread itself does not state which annual edition was being discussed or reproduce its headline cost, methods, or findings. Its value is in the guests’ attributed comments and perspectives, not as a substitute for the report or a complete analysis of cybersecurity trends.
