In a server room or data center, HVAC does more than keep a room comfortable. It removes heat from IT equipment, delivers conditioned air to server inlets, controls inlet temperature and humidity, separates hot exhaust from cold supply, and manages the energy and capacity needed to keep cooling reliable. The right approach depends on equipment, room design, load density, climate, and operating requirements.

What does HVAC do in a server room?

Servers and other IT equipment convert much of their electrical power into heat. Cooling systems must carry that heat away from equipment and reject it outside the room or facility. The practical objective is to keep conditions at equipment air inlets within the limits appropriate to the hardware—not simply to make the room feel cool to people.

ASHRAE explains that, for energy efficiency and equipment reliability and longevity, facilities should be designed so ambient equipment inlet conditions fall within its recommended temperature and humidity ranges under normal circumstances. That guidance appears in ASHRAE’s 2023 ASHRAE Handbook—HVAC Applications, Chapter 20, “Data Centers and Telecommunication Facilities.” The applicable range depends on equipment class and manufacturer limits, so there is no single temperature or humidity setpoint that fits every server room.

How do data centers keep servers cool?

Cooling is a path, not just a machine: conditioned air must reach equipment intakes in sufficient quantity, warmed exhaust must return to cooling equipment, and the system must remove the heat without letting supply and exhaust air mix unnecessarily.

1. Remove heat from IT equipment

CRAC (computer room air conditioner) and CRAH (computer room air handler) systems are common room-level cooling equipment. They cool or condition air and move it through the room; the cooling system then rejects the captured heat. Their capacity and configuration must match the facility’s heat load, airflow paths, and operating design. Cooling designed only around human comfort may not adequately address concentrated rack loads.

2. Deliver cooling air to equipment intakes

Air distribution may use raised-floor supply, overhead delivery, or centralized air handling. Whatever the arrangement, sufficient airflow must reach the actual rack load. The return path carries warmed exhaust back to cooling equipment. If supply air reaches a return opening without passing through IT equipment, it is bypass air: the system spends energy cooling air that is not doing useful work.

Floor openings, overhead ducts, cable penetrations, rack layout, and other obstructions all affect delivery. Check whether the distribution path can supply the airflow the installed load requires, and prevent short-circuiting between supply and return. ENERGY STAR’s airflow and HVAC guidance and airflow-management guidance describe measures such as sealing unwanted openings and using blanking panels in empty rack spaces.

3. Control temperature and humidity at equipment inlets

Sensors and controls help maintain conditions within the envelope appropriate to the installed equipment and facility design. Measure at rack inlets, where equipment draws air, rather than relying only on a room-level reading. Sensor placement matters: a sensor must represent conditions the equipment actually experiences for the control system to respond usefully.

Use the equipment manufacturer’s limits and applicable facility guidance to establish operating targets. ASHRAE’s Chapter 20 and its AI Data Center Energy Performance Framework address inlet conditions, monitoring, and control. A room thermostat reading alone cannot establish that every rack inlet is within its suitable range.

4. Separate hot exhaust from cold supply

In a hot-aisle/cold-aisle layout, racks are arranged so equipment intakes face a cold aisle and exhausts face a hot aisle. Blanking panels close unused rack spaces; seals limit leaks around racks and openings; and containment can further separate the two air streams. These measures reduce hot-air recirculation into equipment intakes and cold-air bypass into returns.

In this layout, hot-aisle return air is intentionally warm. Cooling controls should therefore be based on meaningful server inlet conditions rather than relying uncritically on return-air temperature. ENERGY STAR’s hot-aisle/cold-aisle layout guidance warns that a retrofit can require downtime, changes to cable and power paths, and HVAC retuning. Reorienting racks without evaluating the cooling system can create hot spots.

5. Manage cooling capacity and energy

Fans, cooling equipment, economizers, setpoints, and airflow controls all affect electricity use. ENERGY STAR notes that HVAC accounts for 40% of energy in an average data center; the page does not specify a year, and the figure is not a prediction for a particular facility. Its guidance also reports that containment in data centers with hot/cold aisles can reduce energy expense by 5% to 10%, and that in-rack or in-row cooling can use three times less energy than conventional cooling in a high-energy-density server rack. Those figures have different comparison contexts and are not guaranteed savings for a specific installation.

Treat these as published estimates for the stated combination, not as values to add to other savings figures or as a facility-specific forecast. The figures and their contexts are presented in ENERGY STAR’s airflow and HVAC guidance and containment guidance.

Which cooling approach fits a server room?

No cooling layout is best for every room. Compare options against the heat load and rack density, the ability to control inlet conditions, airflow separation, reliability and failure response, energy and water use, local climate, retrofit disruption, and maintenance needs.

Approach What it does Key considerations
Room-based CRAC/CRAH Conditions and circulates air for a room or zone. Performance depends on capacity, distribution paths, rack arrangement, and control strategy.
Central air handling with underfloor or overhead delivery Moves conditioned air from centralized equipment to racks through a distribution system. Check airflow capacity, obstructions, and whether supply reaches the rack load and return captures exhaust.
Hot/cold aisles, with or without containment Organizes racks to separate equipment intake air from exhaust. Blanking, sealing, and containment can improve separation; retrofits may disrupt operations and require HVAC retuning.
In-row or in-rack cooling Places cooling closer to the rack or row. ENERGY STAR reports lower energy use than conventional cooling for a high-energy-density rack, but site results depend on design and conditions.
Air-side or water-side economizer Uses suitable outdoor conditions or water-side heat rejection to reduce mechanical cooling. Benefit depends on climate, humidity targets, operating hours, filtration, water availability, and system design.

Economizers are not universally “free” cooling: they have operating and design constraints, and water-side approaches involve water considerations. DOE FEMP’s cooling water efficiency guidance for federal data centers discusses water and cooling opportunities; ENERGY STAR’s HVAC guidance also covers economizers.

How can I improve server room cooling efficiency?

  1. Map the air path. Identify where supply air enters, how it reaches rack intakes, and how exhaust returns. Check raised-floor or overhead capacity and look for obstructions or short paths from supply to return.
  2. Measure where the equipment breathes. Place temperature sensors at representative rack inlets and use those readings to assess conditions and guide controls. A room-level average can conceal localized hot spots.
  3. Close avoidable gaps. Install rack-compatible blanking panels in unused rack spaces and seal unintended openings that let air bypass equipment or mix hot and cold streams. Check the rack size and compatibility before selecting panels; no fixed energy saving follows from a panel alone.
  4. Improve separation before lowering setpoints. Align rack airflow direction with the hot/cold aisle arrangement, and assess whether seals or containment can reduce recirculation and bypass. Do not reorient racks without checking cable and power paths, cooling controls, and expected disruption.
  5. Tune airflow to the IT load. Adjust fan speed and delivery so airflow matches demand rather than oversupplying air. Confirm that changes maintain suitable inlet conditions across racks, including during changing loads.
  6. Evaluate economizers against local constraints. Consider climate, humidity, filtration, water supply, operating hours, and equipment envelopes before choosing air-side or water-side operation.
  7. Review reliability and maintenance alongside efficiency. Assess cooling capacity, monitoring, failure response, and maintenance needs as part of any change; a lower energy target is not useful if equipment inlet conditions become unsuitable.

DOE’s data-center toolkit announcement describes the value of focusing on inlet temperature and airflow modeling. ASHRAE’s AI Data Center Energy Performance Framework likewise addresses airflow, sensing, controls, and economizers.

Why an office air conditioner is not a drop-in solution

A server room’s cooling requirements are governed by IT equipment, concentrated heat loads, airflow paths, inlet conditions, and the facility’s reliability needs—not by occupant comfort alone. Consumer air conditioning is not established here as a replacement for engineered cooling. Cooling equipment and distribution should be selected as part of a design that accounts for the installed load, operating conditions, and the consequences of a cooling interruption.
