HPE’s Spaceborne Computer is a computing payload designed to test data-center-style processing aboard the International Space Station. The third iteration launched in January 2024 on a SpaceX Falcon 9 as part of a Northrop Grumman cargo mission contracted by NASA. HPE supplied the computer; SpaceX supplied the rocket; Northrop Grumman operated the cargo mission; and NASA contracted the resupply flight and supports research on the station.
What is the Spaceborne Computer?
HPE’s Spaceborne Computer program puts commercial server hardware on the ISS to explore how computing performs in space. NASA describes SBC-2 as a high-performance experiment using commercial off-the-shelf computers. The work includes testing onboard processing and artificial intelligence, as well as ways to recover from or mitigate errors associated with solar and galactic cosmic radiation. NASA’s SBC-2 overview described a 24-to-36-month mission expectation in 2021; that estimate concerns the earlier iteration and does not establish how long the 2024 hardware will operate.

What flew in 2024?
HPE said the third iteration launched on January 30, 2024, aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 on a Northrop Grumman Commercial Resupply Services flight contracted by NASA. HPE described the configuration as based on Edgeline and ProLiant servers and equipped with more than 130 TB of flash-based storage—its largest storage amount sent to the station on a single mission. The company said the capacity was intended to support larger data sets and more applications. These are HPE’s descriptions of the hardware and goals, not independent confirmation that every capability was validated in orbit. HPE’s January 2024 announcement
Why process data on the space station?
In the conventional workflow, an experiment produces data aboard the station, the data are sent to Earth, and ground systems process them before results are returned to investigators. That round trip can delay decisions. Processing some data in orbit could shorten the time to results, reduce reliance on sending every large data file down, and let researchers consider changes while an experiment is still operating in space.

| Approach | Time to results | Communications and data transfer | Opportunity to adjust an experiment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Downlink data for ground processing | Results depend on the downlink, ground analysis, and return of findings. | Requires sending the relevant data to Earth and returning results. | May be limited by the time needed to complete that exchange. |
| Process data onboard | Can provide results sooner when analysis happens on station. | May reduce the need to downlink all raw data, though communications are still needed to share results. | Can give investigators a chance to respond while equipment or samples remain in orbit. |
NASA has also explained the broader motivation for space-based computing: as missions travel farther from Earth, communication delays and constraints make dependence on ground-based computing less practical. The ISS experiment explores onboard computing; it does not demonstrate that deep-space communication challenges have been solved. NASA’s Spaceborne Computer podcast
What has the ISS computer actually done?
A reported result returned within eight hours
The ISS National Laboratory reported that an experiment’s data were analyzed onboard using SBC-2 together with an edge-computing solution created and managed by IBM. The resulting file reached NASA investigators within eight hours. That is a specific reported use case; it should not be read as a universal processing time for every experiment or as an HPE-only system result. ISS National Laboratory’s account of the experiment

Earlier program experiments
HPE says 24 research experiments were completed on station in 2022 through the program. The company lists applications including healthcare, image processing, natural-disaster recovery, 3D printing, and 5G. Those examples describe HPE’s program history, not a claim that the 2024 iteration completed all of those experiments. HPE’s Spaceborne Computer program page

The launch establishes that the third iteration was sent to the ISS in January 2024. It does not establish that it remains operational now: the public mission and experiment information cited here does not provide a current status update for that iteration. Nor does the launch alone prove that every planned AI, high-performance-computing, or radiation-mitigation objective succeeded. The firm takeaway is that the program is testing commercial computing and onboard data processing in the station’s space environment, with at least one reported experiment returning results to investigators within hours.
