To add category browsing, text search, pagination, and related-video suggestions to a PHP YouTube app, treat each as a distinct YouTube Data API workflow and preserve its filters as users move between pages. The SitePoint tutorial behind this title was published in 2015 and updated in 2024; its Laravel-era code is a useful architectural example, not current drop-in code.
What the SitePoint tutorial demonstrates
The tutorial extends an earlier app that lists popular YouTube videos. Its additions are category browsing, query-based search, pagination, and suggestions related to a selected video. The original article is dated May 18, 2015, with an update dated November 11, 2024: SitePoint’s tutorial. A matching SitePoint Community thread preserves the title and tutorial discussion.

The examples use Laravel routes, Blade templates, and a YouTube client library in the style of the period. When adapting the approach, check the current framework and library documentation for method signatures and request-building conventions rather than copying old snippets unchanged.

| Feature | Request approach | State to preserve |
|---|---|---|
| Browse videos by category | Get the available video categories for a region, then request videos using the selected category ID. | Region, category ID, and page token. |
| Search by text | Call search.list with the query; constrain results with type=video when the interface is specifically for videos. |
Query, filters, and page token. |
| Show related suggestions | The historical tutorial calls search.list with type=video and relatedToVideoId. |
Selected video ID and any other supported filters. |
These are different requests, not one combined “videos” endpoint. The current search.list reference describes search-result resources, supported result types, pagination, and filters. Its current extract does not establish that relatedToVideoId is still supported, so verify the live parameter reference before building a feature around that historical suggestion method.

Implement category browsing and pagination
Load categories for the intended region
The tutorial first requests video categories using a region code. Region matters because the available category list is associated with the requested location. Populate the category selector from the API response rather than assuming a fixed set of IDs.
Request videos for the selected category
When the user selects a category, include its category ID in the video-list request. Keep that selection when generating pagination links; otherwise, moving to the next page can discard the category and show a different set of results. Likewise, retain the region if it affects the category or listing request.

Implement text search
For a text search, send the user’s query to search.list. Set type=video when the product needs videos rather than a mix that may include channels or playlists. The current reference supports up to 50 results per page and page tokens for subsequent results. Keep the query and any filters alongside the token so each page continues the same search. Video category filtering is documented when results are constrained to video results; consult the reference for the exact supported parameters and combinations.

The API workflow does not guarantee that every query or category will return a non-empty page.
Handle related-video suggestions carefully
The SitePoint example uses a video ID with search.list, type=video, and relatedToVideoId to seek related results. Because the current API-reference extract does not confirm this parameter’s availability, do not assume the 2015 example still works. Before implementing it, check the live parameter documentation and test the currently supported behavior in your project. If the parameter is unavailable, the cited material does not establish a replacement method.
Set up the API and plan for quota
- Create or use a Google Account and a project in Google Cloud Console, then enable the YouTube Data API. Google’s getting-started overview lists these prerequisites.
- Build requests using the current API reference and the current version of your PHP client library. Avoid treating the historical Laravel code as a current SDK specification.
- Monitor quota in the project’s Google Cloud Console and recheck limits before launch. Google’s current overview documents default allocations of 100
search.listcalls per day and 10,000 units per day combined for other endpoints; these are documented defaults, not a guarantee for every project. - Account for request costs in the correct quota bucket. The current search.list reference lists 1 unit per call in the Search Queries quota bucket. The videos.list reference lists 1 unit for that method.
Google’s revision history records a move to granular quota buckets, which is why older quota figures should not guide a current design. The 2015 article’s claims of 50,000,000 units per day and 100 units per search request are obsolete. Quota allocations and policy can change, so confirm the current project limits rather than relying on published defaults alone.

Keep a popular-video chart distinct from trending
The tutorial also demonstrates videos.list for video details. Google’s revision history records a change effective July 21, 2025 to content returned by the mostPopular chart. Do not describe that chart as equivalent to an earlier “Trending Now” list; consult the current videos.list reference and revision history for the present behavior.

Quick Recap
Practical design checklist
- Choose whether the screen is for category browsing, free-text search, or related results; each has different request inputs.
- Decide which region and language settings apply to the experience, and preserve relevant filters when paginating.
- Keep category ID or query, result type, and page token together so a next-page request represents the same user request.
- Use
type=videowhen the feature should return videos specifically, and verify supported filters against the live reference. - Provide an empty-results state and a way to revise the request.
- Track quota use and verify project-specific limits in Google Cloud Console.
