You do not need one specific amount of RAM or a particular chipset to run diffusion models on Android: the requirements depend on the model, its precision and resolution, and whether the app can use the phone’s CPU, GPU or NPU. Official demonstrations show Stable Diffusion 1.5 running on Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 hardware after optimization, but that does not guarantee support or similar performance in another app. Before choosing a phone, check compatibility with the exact app, model and accelerator path you plan to use.
There is no universal minimum specification
A model file’s size is not the same as the phone’s total memory requirement. The app also needs memory for inference and other runtime work, while Android and other open apps consume memory too. Model architecture, precision or quantization, output resolution, inference steps and software implementation can all affect whether generation works and how long it takes.
For that reason, a processor name or RAM figure alone cannot establish compatibility. A phone might have capable hardware but lack support for the model format or accelerator path required by a particular app.
What published Android examples demonstrate
Xiaomi’s QNN implementation
Xiaomi’s StableDiffusionOnDevice project is based on Stable Diffusion v1.5 and says it does not support other Stable Diffusion architectures. Its listed target platforms are Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and 8 Gen 3. Xiaomi Mobile Phone Team’s October 2023 test notes describe measurements on Xiaomi 13 and Xiaomi 14 series phones.

These are figures from Xiaomi’s implementation and tests, not minimum phone specifications. The CPU and NPU rows are not a controlled comparison of the processors alone: they use different precision, memory requests and output resolution. Xiaomi also notes that performance depends on hardware, system load and thermal status.
Qualcomm’s Snapdragon demonstration
Qualcomm described taking the FP32 Stable Diffusion 1.5 model and applying quantization, compilation and hardware acceleration to run it on an Android phone powered by Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. The company characterized Stable Diffusion as having more than one billion parameters. This shows that on-device generation is feasible with a tuned software stack; it does not establish a minimum specification for other apps.

In a February 23, 2023 article, Qualcomm authors Ziad Asghar and Dr. Jilei Hou wrote: “For Stable Diffusion, we started with the FP32 version 1-5 open-source model from Hugging Face and made optimizations through quantization, compilation, and hardware acceleration to run it on a phone powered by Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform.”
Research measurements are configuration-specific
The MobileDiffusion paper identifies model size, memory and inference speed as central challenges for mobile diffusion. A separate GPU-aware optimization paper reports under 12 seconds for Stable Diffusion 1.4 at 512×512 with 20 iterations on a Samsung S23 Ultra in its tested GPU setup. That is a research result for its stated configuration, not a timing to compare directly with Xiaomi’s different NPU and CPU tests.

CPU, GPU and NPU: what matters
Android inference frameworks can offer CPU, GPU and NPU execution routes, but the app must be built to use the relevant runtime, delegate and model format on the device. Google’s LiteRT Android documentation describes Android inference options; its overview covers on-device inference and development. Having an accelerator in the phone does not mean every app can use it.
CPU execution is another possible route, but it may be much slower in a particular implementation. Xiaomi’s CPU figures above are substantially longer than its NPU figures, but because the reported settings differ, they should not be read as a universal CPU-versus-NPU speed ratio. For performance-sensitive development, Android’s NNAPI documentation discusses distributing computation across available processors and provides forward-looking guidance.

How to compare Android phones for local generation
Use the app’s current documentation and test the exact model and settings you intend to use. Compare candidates on these points:
- App and device support: Does the app list your Android version and chipset as supported? Does it support the selected model architecture?
- Accelerator path: Will the app run on CPU, GPU or NPU on that phone, and does its runtime or delegate support the device?
- Memory headroom: Check the app’s stated memory needs and leave room for Android and other running apps. Do not treat the model file size as the full RAM requirement.
- Model build and precision: Confirm whether the app uses FP16, INT8 or another format and whether that build is supported by its execution path.
- Output workload: Compare resolution and inference steps, since timings at different settings are not equivalent.
- Sustained behavior: Repeated generation can behave differently as system load and temperature change; a single short run does not establish sustained performance.
- Storage: Allow space for model files and generated images. The published examples do not establish a universal storage minimum.
What this means when buying or developing
If you are choosing a phone
Start with the specific Android diffusion app, then verify its currently supported chips, Android versions, model formats and output settings. A Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 or 8 Gen 3 is evidence of compatibility with Xiaomi’s named QNN project, not a guarantee that a different app will support that phone or achieve Xiaomi’s timings.

If you are building an Android app
Plan around the complete deployment stack, not just model parameters: conversion or quantization, runtime and delegate support, memory headroom, accelerator availability and thermal behavior all affect the result. LiteRT’s Android resources describe available inference paths, while Xiaomi’s project illustrates how a particular model and Qualcomm platform can be paired in one implementation.
