If YouTube detects a song or other third-party content during your livestream, it may show a warning and replace your live picture with a placeholder. If the material continues, YouTube may temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream. That live response is separate from a Content ID claim on an archived replay—and neither outcome automatically means a copyright strike.
What happens during the broadcast
YouTube says it scans all live streams for matches to third-party content, including another live broadcast. When it identifies a match, it may replace the live picture with a placeholder and warn you to stop using the material. If you remove or otherwise resolve the issue, the stream may continue; if the content remains, YouTube may interrupt or terminate it. YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams

The response is not guaranteed to be a mute-only action or to follow a fixed sequence in every case. YouTube’s guidance does not specify a universal song-duration threshold, detection delay, number of warnings, or guarantee of interruption rather than termination. Check the notices for your broadcast in YouTube Studio.

A live interruption, an archive claim, and a strike are different
| Outcome | When it can happen | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Warning, placeholder, interruption, or termination | During the live broadcast | YouTube has detected third-party content and may require you to stop using it. The broadcast may continue if you address the warning; otherwise it may be interrupted or terminated. YouTube Help |
| Content ID claim on the archived video | After the stream ends, if you choose to archive it | YouTube says Content ID claims are made after the live stream ends, if it is archived. A mid-stream match does not by itself mean an immediate claim has been placed on the replay. YouTube Help |
| Copyright strike or loss of live access | As a separate enforcement consequence | A strike is not another name for a Content ID match or a live interruption. YouTube says a strike on an active or archived live stream may disable live-stream access. YouTube Help: Community Guidelines strikes basics |
What to do if YouTube warns you
- Stop transmitting the matched material. Remove the song or other third-party content from the broadcast and check YouTube Studio for the notice and any instructions. Addressing the warning may let the live stream continue. YouTube Help
- If you have a licence, contact the rights owner. Ask them to add your channel to their Content ID allowlist. YouTube warns that a licensed broadcast may still be interrupted if the channel has not been allowlisted. YouTube Help
- If the stream stops, check Studio for account notices. Look for a strike or listed restriction and follow the resolution shown there. YouTube says live access may be restored once the listed issues are fixed; a strike may disable live streaming. YouTube Help
If the archived livestream receives a claim
Review the claim in YouTube Studio. If the available controls are appropriate for your video, YouTube may let you trim the claimed segment, replace the song with music from the YouTube Audio Library, or erase or mute the claimed audio. The claim clears only if the edit successfully removes the claimed material. YouTube Help: Remove claimed content from videos

Why licensed music can still trigger a live interruption
A licence and a Content ID allowlist address different parts of the problem. You may have permission to use a track, yet YouTube can still match it during the broadcast if the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel. Contact the rights owner to request allowlisting, and check the broadcast notices rather than assuming the licence prevented an interruption. YouTube Help

Ordinary song detection is not the partner live-matching tool
YouTube also documents a separate Content ID matching feature for certain rights-holder partners using YouTube Studio Content Manager. It helps eligible partners find copies of their own live streams on other live streams; it is not the ordinary creator-side process for a song detected in a broadcast. YouTube describes access criteria including an operational record, time-sensitive content, a high likelihood of restreaming, globally owned rights to the stream, and no third-party content in it. Its documented sequence warns the streamer using the content; continued matches may replace the stream with a static image without sound and then terminate it. YouTube says this specialized process creates no claims during the matching process. YouTube Help
