Recover a 24/7 YouTube stream by checking the VPS first, then the encoder process, its internet connection and YouTube’s ingest status—in that order. A power cut can interrupt more than the encoder, and YouTube does not guarantee that restarting it will resume the same broadcast or watch page. Use the Live Control Room to confirm what YouTube is receiving before treating the stream as restored.
1. Check whether the VPS is reachable
- Try SSH. Use the normal address and account for your VPS. If the connection works, log in and continue to the encoder checks below.
- If SSH fails, inspect the host dashboard. Check whether the VPS is powered on and whether the provider reports an incident affecting its region. Use the provider’s browser, serial or recovery console if one is offered. Console names and recovery options differ by host.
- Use provider-specific recovery instructions. DigitalOcean, for example, documents a Recovery Console for cases where a VM has lost network connectivity or its SSH service has failed (DigitalOcean Recovery Console). That is an example for DigitalOcean, not a procedure to assume on another Indian VPS.
If the server is powered off, stuck during boot or unavailable on the provider’s network, resolve that host-level problem before changing YouTube settings. A stream key change cannot repair a VPS that has not booted.

2. Check and restart the encoder
Once logged in, identify the encoder command or service actually used in this installation. Check whether it is running and review recent system logs for the time of the power cut. Restart the existing service or command if it has stopped, following the setup’s own instructions.
- Do not assume a universal systemd unit name or copy a guessed restart command; service names and launch methods depend on how the server was configured.
- Do not post stream keys, passwords or unredacted logs in public screenshots or support requests.
- If the encoder is already running, avoid starting a second copy until you know how the installation handles duplicate processes and connections.
3. Verify the outbound connection and encoder settings
A running process is not proof that video is reaching YouTube. Confirm that the VPS has working outbound internet access and that the encoder is using the intended YouTube Live server URL and the channel’s current stream key. YouTube’s setup guidance says, “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.” Find those values in the channel’s Live Control Room setup, rather than substituting an ingest address from memory.

YouTube’s live streaming troubleshooting guidance also points creators to check the stream key, encoder software and outbound internet connection. If you recently changed the key, update the encoder with the value shown in Live Control Room; otherwise, do not rotate it simply because a power cut occurred.
4. Confirm that YouTube is receiving the stream
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room for the stream.
- Check the preview and stream health indicator. Review any error message and its timestamp; the timestamp can help distinguish a host outage from a later encoder or ingest problem.
- Confirm that the public watch page is actually showing the intended live output. Do not assume that a process restart alone restores the viewer-facing stream.
- If YouTube reports a configuration problem, check the encoder’s video and audio formats. YouTube’s error guidance specifies H.264 video and AAC audio for the documented configuration issue (YouTube stream errors).
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived when the encoder output stops, but that statement does not guarantee that a 24/7 stream will continue on the same broadcast or watch page after an outage. Check the current Live Control Room and watch page to establish the status of this particular stream.

5. Check RTMPS only when that is the configured connection
If your encoder is set up for RTMPS, verify the exact server URL and protocol shown in Live Control Room. YouTube says the URL must use the rtmps protocol; its guidance also recommends checking port 443 where needed and confirming encoder support (YouTube RTMPS guidance). Do not replace the configured address with a guessed URL. If the encoder does not support the selected connection method, use a supported configuration rather than repeatedly retrying the same failed connection.

If the VM remains inaccessible after a power cut, or the filesystem appears damaged, use the host’s recovery process and contact its support team if necessary. DigitalOcean documents booting to a Recovery ISO and using tools such as fsck for filesystem recovery after abrupt shutdown-related corruption (DigitalOcean Recovery ISO). Those steps are specific to DigitalOcean. On any other provider, follow that provider’s recovery and filesystem guidance rather than applying commands intended for a different platform.

7. Reduce the chance of manual recovery next time
For a Linux system using systemd, an operator can configure the encoder service to start at boot and restart after failure. The exact unit, dependencies and retry behavior must fit the installed encoder and Linux distribution; validate them during a planned maintenance window. Do not treat an untested service file as a universal fix. Automatic process restarts also cannot repair a VPS that is powered off, cannot reach the network or has a damaged filesystem.
