When your personal Microsoft cloud storage is full, OneDrive stops accepting new uploads and syncing or editing new files. Existing OneDrive files become read-only, but you can still download or delete them. The limit is shared across OneDrive and other Microsoft services, so Outlook.com attachments and data from other Microsoft apps can contribute to the warning. If you remain over quota, Microsoft says your account may be frozen after three months and your OneDrive may be deleted after six months.
What stops working when OneDrive is over quota?
Microsoft says that when personal Microsoft storage exceeds its allowance, new uploads stop and OneDrive stops syncing or editing files. Existing files remain accessible as read-only; you can still download or delete them. Changes made to local files may not sync to the cloud while the account is over quota.

The consequences can extend beyond files. Microsoft says Outlook.com mail and Teams messages with attachments may be affected by a full shared cloud quota. For Outlook.com, incoming messages are returned to their senders; they are not held for delivery later. After you are back under quota, the sender must resend the message.

Why a OneDrive warning can involve other Microsoft services
For a personal Microsoft account, the cloud-storage allowance is shared by OneDrive files and photos, Outlook.com attachments and inline images, and data in other Microsoft apps and services. That means the OneDrive file list may not show everything contributing to the usage.

Microsoft lists 5 GB of free shared cloud storage for personal accounts. Outlook.com has a separate mailbox-storage meter: Microsoft lists 15 GB of free email storage and a 100 GB mailbox limit for Microsoft 365 subscribers. Attachments can count toward the shared cloud allowance as well as the mailbox allowance, so the two meters are not interchangeable.
To see what is using space, sign in to the Microsoft account that received the warning and review its storage breakdown. Check both the OneDrive content and the other listed services before deciding what to remove.

What happens if you stay over the limit?
Microsoft says a personal account that remains over its storage allowance may be frozen after three months. If the account remains over quota, Microsoft may delete the OneDrive and its files after six months. This is a risk, not a guarantee that every account will be frozen or deleted on an exact day; Microsoft warns that files deleted this way cannot be recovered.
Act promptly if you see an over-quota warning. Before permanently removing anything important, make sure you have a separate copy you can access. Microsoft says changes after taking recovery steps can take up to 24 hours to affect the quota. If the account is still frozen after 48 hours, contact Microsoft support.

How to free cloud storage safely
- Confirm the account and usage. Sign in to the account that displayed the warning and inspect the Microsoft storage breakdown. Look for large or unnecessary files, photos, and data from other services that count toward the shared quota.
- Remove only content you no longer need. Deleting a file in a synced OneDrive folder can delete its cloud copy too. If you want to keep a local copy but remove the file from OneDrive, move it outside the OneDrive folder. Choose a destination with enough available space.
- Empty the OneDrive recycle bin if you are sure. Deleted OneDrive items can continue to use cloud storage while they are in the recycle bin. Permanently deleting them frees that space, but items removed from the recycle bin cannot be recovered. Microsoft notes that the storage display may take a short time to reflect the change.
- Wait for the quota to update. Microsoft says storage changes can take up to 24 hours to apply. If the account remains frozen after 48 hours, contact Microsoft support.
- Check whether you are eligible for more storage. Microsoft lists buying a subscription or extending eligible storage as options. Availability depends on the account and plan, so check the entitlement shown for your account rather than assuming a particular offer applies.
Cloud storage full or computer disk full?
A Microsoft cloud-quota warning and a computer’s “Disk full” message describe different problems. The first means the account has run out of online storage. The second can mean the computer lacks working space for downloads, moves, or syncing. If the warning is only about local disk space, deleting cloud files is not the fix.
Files On-Demand and selective folder sync can reduce the space synced files use on the computer while retaining their cloud copies. They do not reduce Microsoft cloud-storage usage. Conversely, permanently deleting OneDrive files can free cloud space, but removes those files from the cloud.

Personal accounts and work or school accounts differ
The storage figures and three- and six-month timelines above concern personal Microsoft accounts. A work or school OneDrive quota may be set or adjusted by the organization. If you use a work or school account, remove unneeded content or ask your IT administrator about the quota and available options rather than applying personal-account plan limits or timelines.
