How the two devices fit into a gaming setup
| What matters | Steam Deck OLED | PS5 |
|---|---|---|
| Primary setup | A handheld PC gaming device, with USB-C display output for connecting peripherals or an external screen. Valve lists output up to 4K at 120 Hz or 8K at 60 Hz; that output capability does not guarantee a particular game will perform well at those resolutions. Valve specifications | A home console designed for a TV or monitor. Sony documents 1440p output and VRR on compatible displays. Sony’s PS5 display guidance |
| Built-in screen | 7.4-inch OLED, 1280 × 800, with refresh rates up to 90 Hz. Valve specifications | No built-in screen; play on a connected television or monitor. |
| Portability | Designed for native handheld play, without needing a separate console or network connection to use it as a handheld. | Play locally on the connected display. Remote Play can stream from a PS5 to supported devices, but it still depends on the console and network. Sony Remote Play |
| Storage expansion | microSD card slot. Check current compatibility before choosing a card. Valve specifications | An M.2 SSD expansion connector is listed in Sony’s CFI-21XX manual. Check the manual and current requirements before choosing a drive. Sony M.2 SSD guidance |
Which one suits the way you play?
Choose the PS5 for a TV-first setup
The PS5 is the more natural fit if your main gaming spot is a living-room television or desk monitor and the games you want are in the PlayStation catalog. Its display features may matter if your screen supports them: Sony documents 1440p output and VRR, but VRR requires a compatible HDMI 2.1 TV or monitor, and results vary by display and game. Choose based on the games and display you actually own or plan to use, not on a resolution or refresh-rate number in isolation. The Deck’s built-in screen and the PS5’s external-display features describe different use cases, not a direct performance comparison.

Choose the Steam Deck OLED for portable PC gaming
The Deck is the stronger fit if you want to play PC games away from a fixed TV or monitor. It can also connect to peripherals or an external display, so it can serve as a handheld first and a compact desk setup when you want one. Valve’s Steam Deck OLED announcement
#1 Best Overall
- 1TB NVMe SSD
- 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
- Wi-Fi 6E
- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
- Carrying case with removable liner
That flexibility does not mean every PC game works equally well on the handheld. Steam assigns game-specific compatibility labels, including Verified and Playable. Look up the titles you care about in the Steam Deck compatibility listings rather than assuming the entire Steam library behaves the same way.
Consider both only if each fills a distinct role
Owning both can make sense if you want a PlayStation-centered TV setup and a separate handheld for PC games. The overlap depends on the titles you play, and this comparison establishes no current price or cost-of-ownership advantage for either choice. If you are buying one device, prioritize the platform where your preferred games are available and the place you expect to play most.

What to know about screens, battery, and connections
Deck OLED screen and battery
Valve lists the Steam Deck OLED’s screen as 7.4 inches, 1280 × 800, and up to 90 Hz. Its listed battery capacity is 50 Wh, with manufacturer-stated gameplay battery life of 3–12 hours. That is a broad specification range, not a promise for every game, brightness level, or setting. Valve Steam Deck specifications
Using the Deck with a larger display
Valve lists USB-C DisplayPort output of up to 4K at 120 Hz or 8K at 60 Hz. Those are supported output modes, not a guarantee that a game will render smoothly at either resolution. Actual results depend on the game and setup. Valve Steam Deck specifications
Using Remote Play with a PS5
PS Remote Play streams compatible PS4 or PS5 games from a console to supported devices. Sony states a minimum connection speed of 5 Mbps and recommends 15 Mbps for a better experience; streaming quality depends on the network environment. Remote Play extends access to a PS5—it is not independent handheld play, because the console is still required. Sony Remote Play requirements
Check your games before choosing
For a Steam library
Check the Steam Deck listing for each game you expect to play. Verified and Playable labels are game-specific, and compatibility status can change as titles and software are updated. A library-wide assumption is less useful than checking your actual shortlist. Steam Deck compatibility listings

Storage expansion and setup details
The Steam Deck OLED has a microSD slot, while Sony’s CFI-21XX PS5 manual lists an M.2 SSD expansion connector. They use different expansion approaches.
