Uninstalling OneDrive removes its Windows app where Windows allows it, but it does not by itself delete your OneDrive cloud files. The important risk is not the uninstall button: it is mistaking online-only placeholders for saved local copies, or deleting files from a folder that is still syncing.
What uninstalling OneDrive changes—and what it does not
Microsoft Support says, “You won’t lose files or data by uninstalling OneDrive from your computer.” Files stored in the cloud remain available at OneDrive.com when you sign in. Uninstalling removes the app where supported; it is not the same as deleting the cloud account or its contents.

That reassurance does not mean every file is necessarily a complete copy on the PC. OneDrive Files On-Demand can show files in File Explorer without downloading their contents. Before uninstalling, check whether important files are available offline or make sure you can access them online.

| Unlink this PC | Disconnects this computer from the OneDrive account. | Cloud files remain online; local availability depends on whether a file was downloaded. Microsoft Support and Microsoft Support. |
| Uninstall OneDrive | Removes the Windows app where supported. | Uninstalling alone does not delete OneDrive data. Microsoft Support. |
| Stop folder backup | Stops backing up selected Windows folders. | Previously backed-up files may stay in OneDrive and need to be moved back. Microsoft Support. |
| Delete inside a synced folder | Removes a synced item. | Deletion can affect both the PC and OneDrive. Microsoft Support. |
| Delete cloud content and empty the recycle bin | Deletes OneDrive cloud content and its recycle-bin recovery path. | This is a separate, destructive process—not part of uninstalling. Microsoft Support. |
Check whether your files are actually on the PC
In File Explorer, inspect the availability status of files in the OneDrive folder before disconnecting or removing the app. A file marked “Available on this device” has a local copy. A file marked “Available when online” is an online-only placeholder; after unlinking, Microsoft says it can be reached through OneDrive on the web, but it is not a complete local copy.

If you need a file on the computer without relying on internet access or the cloud account, download it first or move a downloaded copy to a location outside the OneDrive folder. Files On-Demand is designed to let you access files without downloading everything; online-only files do not use hard-drive space for their full contents. Microsoft Support explains Files On-Demand.
Choose the right way to stop using OneDrive
If you only want to stop syncing this PC
Unlinking disconnects the computer from the account without deleting cloud data. Use the OneDrive notification-area icon, then Settings > Account > Unlink this PC. You can sign in again later if you want to reconnect. Microsoft’s unlink instructions.

If you want to remove the Windows app
- Open Start and search for Add or remove programs, or open Windows Settings and go to Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft OneDrive in the app list.
- Select its menu or entry and choose Uninstall, then follow any confirmation or administrator prompt.
Microsoft also documents the Start route through Add or remove programs > Microsoft OneDrive > Uninstall. On some Windows versions OneDrive is built in and cannot be uninstalled; Microsoft’s alternative is to unlink it, turn off its settings, quit it, and hide its File Explorer entry. The documentation does not establish that every Windows 11 edition or managed PC behaves the same way. See Microsoft’s supported options.
Understand what happens to Desktop and other backed-up folders
OneDrive folder backup can place Desktop, Documents, or other familiar folders under OneDrive protection. Stopping backup does not necessarily put those files back in their original device folders. Microsoft says files already backed up remain in the OneDrive folder and may need to be moved manually; new files saved in a folder after backup stops are no longer backed up by OneDrive.

Before stopping backup or uninstalling, check the folders’ current locations. If you want the files back in the usual device folder, move them there yourself after confirming they are available locally. Microsoft’s folder-backup guide.
Be careful when deleting files or the OneDrive folder
Deleting a file from a synced OneDrive folder can delete it from both the computer and OneDrive. If you want to keep a PC copy while removing the cloud copy, first move the file outside the OneDrive folder; do not simply delete it from inside the synced location. Microsoft explains deletion and moving behavior.

Do not remove the OneDrive folder as a cleanup step until you have checked which items are downloaded and which are online-only placeholders. Removing the app and erasing cloud content are separate decisions.
Permanently deleting OneDrive cloud files is a separate process
If your goal is to erase cloud content, Microsoft’s instructions describe a separate sequence: unlink the computer, delete the files from OneDrive online, then empty the OneDrive recycle bin only if you are certain. Microsoft warns that files deleted from that recycle bin cannot be recovered from it. Uninstalling OneDrive does not perform these steps. Read Microsoft’s permanent-deletion instructions.

What “completely” can—and cannot—mean
For most people, “completely” means stopping sync, removing the app, or hiding its Explorer entry—not performing a forensic cleanup. Microsoft’s support documentation covers app removal, unlinking, and hiding options; it does not establish that uninstalling removes every local file, account token, registry entry, or operating-system integration on every Windows 11 device.
