Choose an analytics tool by first deciding what you need to measure: website traffic, behavior inside your product, or broader business performance. For product analytics, PostHog and Amplitude are two options to evaluate, but the available information does not establish a universal winner. Compare their current terms against your expected usage, required features, and capacity to implement and maintain analytics.
Start with the measurement job
Website analytics
Website analytics focuses on traffic and activity on a website. If your main questions concern how people arrive at your site and what they do there, start with a website-measurement tool. A product analytics comparison is not a substitute for evaluating website analytics.

Product analytics
Product analytics focuses on behavior inside a digital product, such as the events and journeys your team chooses to measure. It is a better fit when you need to understand how people use an app or service after they enter it.

Business reporting
Broader business reporting answers a different set of questions, such as how operational or financial measures relate to product activity. The options below are discussed as product analytics tools; the available vendor information does not establish them as replacements for every web analytics or business-intelligence need. A startup may need one measurement category or a combination.

Compare the documented product analytics options
The table separates published details from what remains unestablished. Vendor pages describe their own products and terms; they are not an independent, like-for-like performance test.
| Option | Documented fit or offer | Published usage terms | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| PostHog | Product analytics, with separate product areas listed for session replay, feature flags, experiments, and other tools. | Its product analytics pricing page lists 1,000,000 analytics events per month free, then a starting listed rate of $0.0000500 per event, with lower listed per-event rates at higher volumes. These are vendor-published terms, not a cost estimate for your startup. Accessed October 7, 2026. | Check the current event bands, how the allowance and billing apply to your use, and the separate allowances and billing interactions for any other product areas you plan to use. |
| Amplitude | Its startup page describes an offer and an application route through a free account. | The page states startup-offer thresholds of 200,000 monthly tracked users or 100 million events per month. These are offer thresholds, not general plan limits or a guarantee of acceptance. Accessed October 7, 2026. | Confirm current eligibility, terms, and whether the offer suits your expected usage before relying on it. |
PostHog also lists monthly free allowances across analytics and other product areas on its broader pricing page. Allowances and billing can differ by product, so do not assume that a free analytics allowance covers session replay, feature flags, experiments, or other tools.
PostHog’s pricing page says, “More than 90% of companies use PostHog for free.” That is the vendor’s statement; the consulted page excerpt does not provide a survey methodology, so it should not be treated as an independently verified industry statistic.

Estimate economics using your own activity
Do not compare a headline free tier in isolation. Estimate the activity your team expects to send, identify the unit each vendor charges for, and check how usage beyond an allowance is billed. The available figures are not directly comparable: PostHog lists an event allowance and per-event rates, while Amplitude’s cited startup page gives eligibility thresholds rather than a comparable price schedule.
Rank #3
- Define the workload. List the product events and approximate monthly activity you expect to analyze. Use your own forecast rather than assuming a vendor’s published threshold describes your likely bill.
- Match the billing unit. Record whether the relevant vendor term is based on events, tracked users, or another unit. Do not treat different units as equivalent.
- Check what is included. Review each product allowance separately, including any adjacent tools the team intends to use.
- Confirm the current terms. Before choosing, verify rates, free allowances, packaging, and eligibility on the official pages linked above. Pricing and startup offers can change.
Check feature scope and team capacity
Decide whether the startup needs core event analysis alone or a wider toolkit that may include session replay, feature flags, or experimentation. PostHog lists these as distinct product areas, but their inclusion and allowances should be checked individually. The cited material does not provide a like-for-like comparison of implementation effort between PostHog and Amplitude.
- Confirm that the vendor has an SDK or integration path suitable for your product and development environment.
- Identify which events the team will instrument, who owns the event definitions, and how they will be maintained as the product changes.
- Review data governance needs, including which user or product data may be collected and who should have access.
- Test the workflow with a representative use case before committing to a larger rollout; evaluate the work required to instrument and maintain it rather than assuming implementation is effortless.
Make a shortlist without assuming a winner
Use the task and constraints to decide what to evaluate first:
Rank #4
- If the primary need is website traffic: evaluate website analytics specifically rather than treating a product analytics comparison as decisive.
- If the primary need is in-product behavior: compare product analytics options against the events, user journeys, and reporting questions your team needs to answer.
- If adjacent product tools matter: examine each tool’s scope and pricing separately; a broad product page does not mean every feature is included in the same allowance.
- If an offer is central to the decision: verify eligibility and terms directly with the vendor before building a budget around it.
Amplitude’s 2026 product analytics comparison is vendor-authored, so treat its comparisons as the company’s own material, not independent rankings. The cited information does not provide an independent performance benchmark for these options or establish a universal best platform. The better choice depends on the startup’s measurement job, expected usage, feature needs, and ability to implement and operate the tool.
