Apple does not give a fixed amount of storage recovered or a removal time. You can also switch off selected features or manage ChatGPT separately instead of disabling the whole suite.
What changes when you turn it off?
Apple says that turning off Apple Intelligence removes its on-device models from your Mac. The Apple Support article How to get Apple Intelligence does not specify how many gigabytes this frees or how quickly the models are removed. Apple’s listed 7 GB device-storage requirement is a requirement for using Apple Intelligence, not an estimate of the space you will recover by disabling it.

While the suite is off, Apple Intelligence-powered features are unavailable. This does not mean you have to disable every capability: macOS versions that provide individual controls let you turn off selected features while leaving others available.
Turn off Apple Intelligence across the Mac
- Open System Settings.
- Select Apple Intelligence & Siri.
- Click the button next to Apple Intelligence to turn it off.
Apple’s Use Apple Intelligence on your Mac guide says the control shown can depend on your macOS version and whether Apple Intelligence was set up previously. Menu labels and steps may therefore differ on other releases.

Turn off selected features instead
If your goal is to stop a particular capability, use its individual control rather than switching off the full suite. Apple’s Mac guide to turning off and restricting Apple Intelligence features lists controls for Siri AI, Messages summaries, Mail summaries, notification summaries, personalized Smart Replies in Mail, and Journal writing prompts. The names and availability of these controls vary by macOS version and region.
Manage ChatGPT separately
ChatGPT is a separate Apple Intelligence extension. To stop its use, open the Apple Intelligence settings and turn off Use ChatGPT; in newer Siri AI setup, the relevant label may be Use Extension. Apple’s guide to using ChatGPT with Apple Intelligence on Mac also explains that you can turn off ChatGPT and Setup Prompts to stop Siri from suggesting ChatGPT.

Restrict access through Screen Time
Screen Time provides an administrative way to restrict access to Writing Tools, image creation, and intelligence extensions such as ChatGPT. This is distinct from the ordinary system-wide Apple Intelligence switch. The available restrictions can vary with macOS version and region; see Apple’s Screen Time guide to blocking access to Apple Intelligence features.

Check Mac eligibility and feature availability
Apple’s current requirements page says Apple Intelligence requires a compatible Mac with Apple silicon, macOS Sequoia 15.1 or later, 7 GB of device storage, and the device and Siri set to the same supported language. Requirements, supported languages, regions, and features can differ by release and feature, so a feature or setting described in one version’s guide may not appear on another Mac.
