A dependent app or workflow may stop working as expected. In some cases, Windows may need a restart; if feature files were removed, restoring them may also require a download or another source.
What does “turn off a Windows feature” mean?
Windows has optional capabilities that are not included by default but can be added later. Microsoft Learn describes optional features such as language resources, including language packs and handwriting support. For Windows 10 and Windows 11, you can add or remove optional features in Settings, although menu names and locations vary by version and update. The phrase “turn off” can describe different operations. Removing an optional feature through Settings, disabling one with PowerShell or DISM, removing its files from the Windows image, and hiding the controls that let users manage features are not interchangeable. Hiding the controls does not itself disable a specific feature.

Use Settings to remove an optional feature through Windows’ normal client interface. The exact navigation varies across Windows releases, so search Settings for “Optional features” if the label is not where expected. Windows may need to obtain or remove feature content as part of the change.

Disabling a feature with PowerShell or DISM
Administrators can disable a specific feature with PowerShell or DISM. Microsoft documents Disable-WindowsOptionalFeature for either the running operating system, using -Online, or a mounted offline image, using -Path. These commands are servicing tools; most users do not need them just to change an optional feature in Settings.
Removing the feature files
DISM’s -Remove option does more than disable a feature: it removes the feature’s payload files while leaving its manifest. That can reduce the contents stored in an image, but the files may need to be obtained again before the feature can be enabled.

Hiding the management controls
Organizations can use Group Policy or mobile device management (MDM) to hide the optional-features interface. Hiding that interface prevents users from managing features there; it is not the documented method for disabling a particular feature.

The feature’s capability becomes unavailable. What that means in practice depends on its purpose: software, settings, or workflows that rely on it may no longer behave as expected until it is enabled again. The general Windows guidance does not list every feature’s dependencies, so check documentation for the specific feature, Windows edition, and version before disabling it on a device you depend on.

Do not assume that turning off an arbitrary feature will make Windows noticeably faster, safer, more private, or smaller. Those outcomes are not established for optional features as a category. Removing payload files is a distinct operation from disabling a feature, and its storage effect depends on the feature and image.
Will Windows need to restart?
Not necessarily. Windows can indicate when a restart is needed, and the PowerShell Get-WindowsOptionalFeature command reports a feature’s state and whether a restart might be required. In DISM, a feature marked DisablePending is not fully disabled until the image has been booted. Follow Windows’ prompt or check the named feature’s state rather than assuming every change needs a restart.

Can you turn the feature back on?
Generally, yes. You can add optional features through Settings or use the PowerShell Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature cmdlet. Windows may obtain the required content through Windows Update. If the feature’s payload files were removed, they must be restored from an available source before the feature can be fully enabled; Microsoft documents Windows Update and a network share as possible sources.

Restoration may take extra steps on managed or offline devices when the expected source is unavailable. Optional content is not necessarily included in the base Windows image. Microsoft’s guidance on migrating and acquiring optional Windows content also explains that an in-place upgrade can leave optional content missing if Setup cannot locate the needed packages.

Before you switch one off
- Identify the exact feature and what capability it provides.
- Check whether apps or workflows you rely on depend on it.
- Use the normal Settings control unless you specifically need an administrative servicing command.
- Notice whether Windows requests a restart, and allow for one if the feature state is pending.
- If disabling through DISM, distinguish a normal disable from using
-Remove, which removes payload files. - On a managed or offline device, confirm that you can access the source needed to restore optional content.
