If you only want to reset preferences while keeping your files, choose Reset All Settings instead.
What a factory restore erases—and what it does not
Erase All Content and Settings removes personal information and settings from the device. When the process finishes, the Hello screen appears. Apple’s factory-reset instructions describe the device erase and recommend backing up first.

The erase applies to the device, not to copies of content stored in iCloud. To recover device data afterward, restore from a backup; only items included in a usable backup can be expected to return. Apple explains backup and restore options in its backup and factory-reset guide.
Choose the right kind of reset
| Choice | What it changes or erases | System software | eSIM handling |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reset All Settings | Returns settings to their defaults while preserving photos, apps, messages, documents, and other data or media. | Does not reinstall iOS or iPadOS. | Not stated in Apple’s Reset All Settings instructions. |
| Erase All Content and Settings | Erases personal content and settings on the device. | Returns the device to factory settings; Apple’s Settings erase instructions do not describe a separate computer-style software reinstall. | When erasing in Settings, you can choose to keep or erase the eSIM. |
| Restore using a computer | Erases the device. | Installs the latest applicable iOS or iPadOS software. | Apple says computer restoration does not delete an iPhone’s eSIM. |
Apple’s Reset All Settings article states that the settings reset preserves data and media. For a full wipe, use Erase All Content and Settings; for an erase with a software reinstall, use the computer Restore workflow.

Before you erase
- Decide whether you need the data. If you might need it, make an iCloud or computer backup before erasing. Check that you can access the account credentials you will need during setup.
- For troubleshooting, consider the less destructive option. Reset All Settings changes preferences without removing personal files and media.
- If using a computer, prepare the connection. Use an updated Mac or PC and a compatible USB data cable whose connectors fit your device and computer. You do not need a cable to erase from Settings.
- If transferring the device, plan for the eSIM. Decide whether to keep or erase it when prompted. If it is erased, contact your carrier to reactivate the cellular plan.
Erase directly from iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset [device] > Erase All Content and Settings. The wording in brackets refers to your iPhone or iPad.
- Follow the prompts. Enter the device passcode or Apple Account password if requested.
- Choose whether to keep or erase the eSIM, then confirm the erase.
- Wait for the erase to finish. The device returns to the Hello screen, where you can set it up again and restore from a backup if you have one.
See Apple’s step-by-step erase instructions for the process.
Restore using a Mac or PC
A computer restore erases the device and installs the latest applicable system software. Apple directs users to Finder on a Mac or Apple Devices on Windows; iTunes is used in specified legacy or when-app-unavailable situations. Follow Apple’s computer restore instructions for the workflow and the applicable app for your computer.

If you suspect someone accessed or tampered with your device
For a suspected compromise, Apple’s personal-safety guidance advises using Safety Check’s Manage Sharing & Access first. Apple specifically cautions against restoring from a backup in this situation because it could reinstall the malicious software you are trying to address. This is guidance for suspected compromise, not a general rule for routine erasing.
