What Happens When Google Ends Updates for a Chromebook?

A Chromebook does not stop working when updates end, but it no longer receives Google’s software and security updates. Check its model-specific date and understand the Android app trade-off before opting in to extended updates.

When a Chromebook reaches its model-specific final automatic update date, it stops receiving ChromeOS and browser updates—including security fixes, bug fixes, and new features. It does not automatically stop working: Google says you can continue using a Chromebook that works well, but apps requiring newer ChromeOS or browser versions may eventually lose support. The exact date and any extended-update options depend on the device.

What stops—and what keeps working

After the final automatic update, Google no longer provides that Chromebook with subsequent software updates. Google describes updates as covering ChromeOS and the browser and including security updates, bug fixes, and new features. The computer may still start and run, but it will not receive those later improvements or patches.

Some apps require particular ChromeOS or browser versions, so compatibility can decline over time. Google does not publish a universal list of affected websites and apps or a fixed grace period before support changes. There is no basis for assuming every site will stop working immediately—or that an out-of-date device remains safe for a particular number of years.

Verified boot can still check the device at startup and repair it if it detects tampering or corruption. That feature does not supply missing security patches. Google’s Auto Update policy explains the post-update implications for managed devices as well.

Find the date for your Chromebook

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select About ChromeOS, then Additional details.
  3. Open Update schedule and note the date shown for your device.

Google says ChromeOS devices receive 10 years of updates, measured from the platform’s first release. Some older models need an opt-in to receive the full period; the 10-year policy does not mean every Chromebook has the same end date. Use the model-specific update schedule as the guide, and check the replacement model’s schedule before buying it.

If the device says updates are controlled by an administrator, it is managed. Work or school users should ask their administrator before opting in, upgrading, or deciding how to reuse it. Google warns that after a managed device’s final automatic update, existing and future policies may not work as intended and technical support will not be provided.

Decide whether to opt in to extended updates

Some older Chromebook models are eligible for extended updates. Google says models released in 2021 or later automatically receive them; a subset of earlier devices requires an opt-in. Eligibility and instructions differ for personally owned and organization-managed devices, so check Google’s extended updates guidance and follow the instructions for your situation.

For eligible older devices, opting in has a significant trade-off: Google says it removes Android apps and the Google Play Store from that Chromebook and erases on-device Android app data. The choice cannot be reversed under Google’s Chromebook Help guidance. Other ChromeOS and Android devices are unaffected, and Play subscriptions can be managed on the web.

Opt in Continues updates through the period listed for the device. Removed; local Android app data is erased.
Do not opt in Stops at the prior scheduled date. Remain installed, though app developers may stop supporting the device over time.

Weigh continued ChromeOS security, performance, and stability updates against keeping Android apps and their local data on this Chromebook. If it is managed by an organization, check with the administrator rather than treating the consumer settings instructions as applicable.

Choose what to do after updates end

  • Keep using it: Google says a Chromebook that is working well can continue to be used, with the understanding that software updates have ended. Check whether the apps and services you rely on still support its versions.
  • Replace it: Google lists upgrading to a new Chromebook as an option. Before choosing a model, look up its specific update-through date in the official schedule.
  • Recycle it: Google points US users to recycling facilities for old or unused devices. Availability depends on location; check current local guidance. See Google’s guidance on using or upgrading an old Chromebook.

Google’s example warning captures the distinction: “This device will no longer receive software updates. You can continue using your computer but should consider upgrading.” That is Google’s advice, not a guarantee that every app, website, or device will continue to work in the same way.
