Meditation vs. Exercise for Focus and Stress: Which Works Better?

Meditation may help some stress symptoms and cognitive measures; exercise may also affect stress. Evidence does not establish one universal winner.

Neither meditation nor exercise is a proven universal winner for both focus and stress. Mindfulness meditation may help reduce some stress symptoms and has evidence for modest gains across several attention and cognitive measures. Exercise has broad health benefits, while the evidence specifically about stress and anxiety is more limited. The better choice depends on what you want to improve, what you can sustain, and whether movement or stillness suits you.

What the evidence says about stress

Meditation may ease some stress symptoms

The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) says current evidence suggests mindfulness meditation may help reduce symptoms of stress, including anxiety and depression, and may help improve sleep. Mindfulness practice includes cultivating focused attention and awareness of the present. These findings do not guarantee that every meditation style or individual will experience the same result. NCCIH’s stress overview was updated on October 3, 2026.

Exercise has a smaller stress-specific evidence base

NCCIH’s January 2024 summary says research has examined exercise and depression, while a much smaller body of research suggests exercise may also affect stress and anxiety symptoms. That qualification is about the amount of stress-specific research; it does not mean exercise is ineffective for stress or lacks broader health benefits. NCCIH’s review of mind-body approaches for stress and anxiety provides that distinction.

A direct comparison does not establish a winner

A 2018 randomized trial assigned 413 community-recruited adults to mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), moderate-intensity exercise, or a wait-list control. The indexed abstract highlights mindfulness self-efficacy as a mediator of program effects, but the available summary does not establish that meditation or exercise performed better than the other. It is not a basis for claiming a head-to-head winner or a precise effect size. The trial record on PubMed describes the study.

What the evidence says about focus

A 2023 meta-analysis of 111 randomized controlled trials found small-to-moderate effects of mindfulness-based interventions across several cognitive outcomes, including executive attention, sustained attention, working memory accuracy, inhibition accuracy, shifting accuracy, global cognition, and subjective cognitive functioning.

Reported standardized effects ranged from g = 0.257 to 0.643 in comparisons with wait-list or no-treatment controls, and from g = 0.192 to 0.394 against active controls. The smaller effects in active-control comparisons matter: meditation’s results were less pronounced when compared with another activity or intervention than when compared with doing nothing. These outcomes are not a definitive test of everyday work focus, and the meta-analysis does not show that meditation outperforms exercise. The 2023 meta-analysis record on PubMed reports the findings.

How to choose between them

The evidence does not prove that one option is best on every practical dimension. Use your goal and circumstances to make a reasonable choice rather than treating this as a contest with one answer.

  • If attention training is your main goal: Mindfulness practice is a reasonable option to try because research has found effects across attention and other cognitive measures. Those results do not guarantee a noticeable change in your daily concentration.
  • If you prefer moving: Choose an exercise activity you can realistically continue. Exercise may affect stress and anxiety, although NCCIH describes the stress-specific research as relatively small.
  • If stress is your main concern: Either may suit you. Consider whether a deliberate attention practice or movement feels more approachable and sustainable; the evidence here does not establish a universal stress winner.
  • If access, physical limitations, or preference shape your choice: Take those constraints seriously. These are practical decision factors, not proof that one approach works better for a particular group.
  • If both appeal: You can combine meditation and exercise if that fits your routine. The evidence available here does not establish that combining them is more effective than either alone.

There is no precise session length established by these sources as optimal. An older systematic review of 47 trials involving 3,515 participants, published in 2014, found moderate evidence that mindfulness meditation programs produced small improvements in anxiety, depression, and pain, but low evidence for stress or distress and mental-health-related quality of life. It found no evidence that meditation programs were better than active treatments such as exercise and other therapies. Because that review searched studies through November 2012, it should be read as an older evidence summary, not the final word on current findings. The review in JAMA Internal Medicine gives its scope and conclusions.

Safety and when to seek support

Meditation is usually considered to have few risks, but potential harms have not been studied enough to support definite safety conclusions. NCCIH notes that some people report increased anxiety, intrusive thoughts, or fear of losing control. It also describes rare reports of symptoms worsening in some people with epilepsy or certain psychiatric conditions, or with trauma histories. If a practice makes you feel worse, stop and consider discussing it with a qualified professional. NCCIH’s stress guidance covers these cautions.

NCCIH advises: “If you are struggling to cope, or if the symptoms of your stress won’t go away, it may be time to talk to a professional.” Meditation and exercise are not substitutes for individualized care when you need it.
