If your Claude API requests stop working, “out of credits” is only one possible explanation. Check the HTTP status and error type first: Anthropic documents 402 billing_error for billing or payment problems, 400 for a configured organization or workspace spending limit, and 429 rate_limit_error for rate limiting or certain spend caps. Each points to a different next step.
Diagnose the error before changing billing
Capture the HTTP status, error type, message, and request ID from the failed response. A generic message in your application is not enough to identify a depleted balance. Anthropic’s API error reference distinguishes these common cases:

The status code narrows the diagnosis, but a 429 alone does not tell you whether to slow requests or address an account-level cap.
What to do for each type of block
402: check billing and payment details
Open Claude Console and review the payment details and billing configuration for the organization associated with the API key. Correct any payment issue, then make a controlled test request and inspect its response. Anthropic’s reviewed documentation does not promise a universal delay before access returns after a billing change.

400: inspect the organization or workspace spending limit
Check the organization or workspace settings that apply to the key. Anthropic says the API can return 400 when usage reaches a spending limit configured for an organization or workspace. Claude Code workspace limits are an exception and may instead return 429.
429: distinguish throttling from a spending cap
An ordinary request-rate limit calls for request pacing and appropriate rate-limit handling. A usage-tier monthly spending-cap error is different: Anthropic says it has no retry-after header and continues until access resumes. Repeated short-interval retries will not resolve that cap. A Claude Code workspace spending limit may also use 429, so read the error message and check the relevant workspace settings.

How to check usage and the account involved
Use Claude Console’s usage tracking to investigate spend and identify the organization or workload associated with the requests. Anthropic’s pricing documentation describes monthly billing based on actual usage, USD payments, Console usage tracking, and usage tiers that affect rate limits. Its indexed copy is stale, however, so it should not be treated as confirmation of current prices or every account’s credit and prepayment rules.

Will adding billing or waiting restore access?
That depends on the failure. Correcting payment details is the relevant action for a 402; changing the applicable cap is relevant when a configured limit blocks requests. A request-rate limit is instead about request behavior. Anthropic’s reviewed documentation does not establish a universal current credit-recharge flow, whether credits expire, whether every account uses prepaid credits, or a guaranteed restoration time after a payment or limit change. Verify the options and status shown for your account in the live Console. If access remains blocked after you address the indicated cause, contact Anthropic support and provide the request ID.
When the error names a model
A model availability error is separate from a billing or spending-limit failure. Requests to retired models fail; check Anthropic’s model deprecation documentation for current status and an active replacement, then migrate if needed. Switching models is not a general fix for payment errors or spending caps.
