Yes, it can—but the benefit depends on what you do with the phone. A higher resolution can show finer detail, while a high refresh rate can make supported games and scrolling look smoother. Neither number guarantees a visibly better experience, and the exact “2K” resolution matters: the term is used inconsistently for phones. A higher refresh rate may also use more power, but the battery impact depends on adaptive refresh, brightness, hardware, software and workload.
What do “2K” and 185Hz mean on a phone?
Resolution: how much detail the display can show
Resolution is the number of pixels used to form the image. The label “2K” is not used consistently in phone specifications, so check the exact pixel dimensions or pixel density rather than relying on the label alone. Pixel density also depends on screen size: the same resolution spread across a larger display produces fewer pixels per inch.

For example, Nothing Phone (2) is listed with a 6.7-inch LTPO AMOLED screen at 2412 × 1080 pixels. That is a useful example of why exact dimensions are more informative than a broad “2K” label; it is not a controlled sharpness comparison.

A 185Hz refresh rate means the panel can refresh up to 185 times per second when that mode is available and in use. It does not mean every app or video runs at 185 frames per second. The app, game, processor and display settings all affect the frame rate you actually see, and a phone may use a lower rate when the maximum is unnecessary.

ASUS lists the ROG Phone 9 as supporting refresh rates up to 185Hz through Game Genie. Its cited product page lists a 6.78-inch E6 AMOLED display, but does not establish a 2K resolution. It therefore verifies an example of a phone advertising up to 185Hz—not a confirmed 2K/185Hz combination.
When can a higher refresh rate make a difference?
Scrolling and everyday movement
Menus, feeds and other motion can look smoother at a higher refresh rate, particularly if you notice judder at lower rates. The difference is less relevant when viewing still photos or text, and it depends on the screen actually using the higher rate. A maximum specification alone does not show how often the phone uses it.

Games
A high refresh rate can benefit games that support higher frame rates, provided the phone can render those frames and the relevant display mode is enabled. If a game is capped at a lower frame rate, a 185Hz panel cannot make that game output 185 frames per second. The ROG Phone 9 page’s “up to 185Hz via Game Genie” specification describes a supported maximum; it does not establish that all games or apps run at that rate.
When does higher resolution matter?
More pixels can render finer detail, but how noticeable that is depends on display size, viewing distance, content and the viewer. On a phone, small text, detailed images and close viewing may make sharpness more apparent; ordinary content may not make the difference obvious to everyone. The cited product specifications do not include perception tests or a controlled comparison of different resolutions.

Will a 2K 185Hz display drain the battery faster?
Running a display at a higher refresh rate can consume more power, but the two headline specifications are not enough to calculate the battery penalty. Brightness, panel and chipset behavior, software, adaptive refresh and what you are doing all affect power use.
Adaptive displays can reduce the refresh rate when the content does not call for the maximum. Nothing says its Phone (2)’s LTPO display can adapt between 1Hz and 120Hz and describes that behavior as intended to preserve power. That is a manufacturer claim, not an independent measurement of the savings. ASUS describes the ROG Phone 9 display as adaptive, but its cited page does not provide a controlled battery test isolating refresh rate.

The manufacturer figures for these phones should not be treated as a direct battery comparison:

| ASUS ROG Phone 9 | 6.78-inch E6 AMOLED; up to 185Hz via Game Genie; 2500 nits peak brightness | 5800mAh. ASUS reports at least 4.5 hours of heavy gaming, 22.1 hours of video streaming and 23.4 hours of Instagram scrolling. These are manufacturer-reported usage figures, not independent or directly comparable benchmarks. |
| Nothing Phone (2), Middle East product page | 6.7-inch LTPO AMOLED; 2412 × 1080 pixels; adaptive 1–120Hz | 4700mAh. The product page says LTPO can adapt refresh to preserve power; no controlled comparison isolating refresh-rate effects is provided. |
| Nothing Phone (3a) Pro, UK product page | 6.77-inch FHD+ AMOLED; adaptive refresh up to 120Hz | 5000mAh. Nothing reports 26 hours of YouTube, 11 hours of BGMI gaming, 24 hours of Instagram scrolling and 45 hours of voice calls. These are manufacturer claims, not a controlled comparison with a 2K/185Hz phone. |
Battery capacities and usage claims alone cannot show how much power a given refresh rate uses. A fair comparison would need comparable independent endurance tests with settings and workloads controlled; the cited product pages do not provide a test that isolates the display’s refresh rate.

How to judge a phone’s display specifications
Use the exact model and the apps you care about. Check the following before treating “2K” or “185Hz” as a practical advantage:
- Resolution: compare the manufacturer’s exact pixel dimensions or stated pixel density, not just its “2K” label.
- Refresh behavior: check the supported rates, whether they are adaptive, and whether the maximum requires a particular mode or feature.
- App support: verify that the games or other apps you use can take advantage of higher frame rates.
- Screen and brightness: consider display size and brightness alongside resolution; neither headline number captures the whole viewing experience.
- Battery evidence: look for credible endurance tests under comparable brightness, refresh and workload settings, rather than inferring battery life from capacity or a manufacturer’s isolated usage claim.
There is no universal winner in the specifications cited here: they document selected manufacturer claims, not a controlled comparison of visual quality or battery life. The ASUS page establishes an up-to-185Hz example but not a 2K resolution, so confirm both specifications on the exact phone before assuming the combination is real.
