The backup goalie becomes the team’s starting goaltender for that game, while the usual starter gets the night off. Coaches may make that choice to manage workload, split a back-to-back, respond to a health concern or recent form, or keep both goalies ready. It does not, by itself, mean the starter has lost the job or that the team is more likely to lose.
What changes when the backup starts?
The backup takes the crease and faces the opponent’s shots. The usual starter is not in the game unless the team makes a goalie change or an injury requires one. The backup’s performance contributes to the result, but so do the defense, the opponent and the team’s scoring.

A start is an opportunity to play, not necessarily a judgment about the starter. NHL goalie coach David Marcoux has described decisions as involving standings, travel, schedule, workload and injuries, among other considerations. His NHL.com explanation also notes that a goalie’s physical health and mental state, and the backup’s need to stay in rhythm, can matter.
Why might a coach choose the backup?
There is no universal rotation rule. Coaches weigh the circumstances of the team, the schedule and the two goalies rather than applying a single formula.

- Workload and rest: A starter coming off a heavy run may get a planned night off. In a back-to-back, coaches may choose which game each goalie plays based on the opponent and how recently each has played.
- Health and readiness: An injury or other health concern can affect availability. A backup who is prepared gives the team another credible option.
- Schedule and travel: Travel, rest between games and the broader schedule can shape when a goalie plays.
- Standings and recent performance: The stakes of a game and how each goalie has been playing can influence the choice.
- Keeping both goalies sharp: A backup needs game opportunities, while a team may want to preserve the starter’s energy over a long season.
The Seattle Kraken’s 2022 goalie-workload explainer discusses how teams consider workload and consecutive-night starts. It also cautions against treating an older estimate of a second-night save-percentage drop as settled: later analyses suggested the effect may be smaller.
Does starting the backup mean the starter has been demoted?
Not on its own. A single backup start can be routine rest or a schedule decision, rather than a change in the team’s depth chart. To understand a particular start, consider the announced lineup alongside recent workload, the schedule and any reported health issue. Unless the coach or team says otherwise, the start alone does not establish the reason or signal that the starter has lost the role.

What does the backup face after a long gap between starts?
Limited playing time can make it harder to maintain timing and game rhythm. In NHL.com’s 2025 report on backup goalies, Winnipeg’s Eric Comrie described the challenge: “The hardest part is definitely finding that game rhythm.” Coaches may help with video discussions and game-like practice to prepare a backup between appearances. The report says NHL teams have increasingly leaned toward tandems and shared workloads; its observation that top goalies play close to 60 games rather than 70 describes a trend, not a league rule or target. Read the NHL.com report on backup goalies and game rhythm.
Does resting the starter improve playoff performance?
It is not established that regular-season workload reliably predicts a goalie’s postseason performance. A 2024 retrospective cohort study examined 51 goalies across 111 goalie-seasons, covering 29 of 31 teams. Its main model found no statistically significant association between regular-season workload and postseason goals saved above average per 60 minutes (R²=.068, P=.26); its save-percentage, quality-start and goals-against models were also not statistically significant. The study is observational, so it does not prove that rest never matters. It also notes that counting starts alone does not capture differences in how long goalies play or how many shots they face.

That study concerns workload and postseason results across goalie-seasons. It does not tell us whether a particular backup start changes the outcome of an individual game. The available evidence here does not justify predicting that a rested starter will play better next time or that a backup start makes a loss more likely.

An emergency backup goalie (EBUG) is a contingency role, not simply the team’s regular second goalie. NHL.com’s article for the 2026–27 season says teams are required to have an EBUG, subject to eligibility limits, and that the EBUG dresses, practices and travels with the team. That policy and role description is specific to the season covered in the article. See NHL.com’s 2026–27 EBUG list and details.
