1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA launch delay does not always mean a launch is canceled. Controllers may pause the countdown, wait for a condition to clear, and resume or recycle the clock while the launch window remains open. A scrub means that attempt is over: the team puts the vehicle into the required safe condition, completes any needed checks or repairs, and plans for a later opportunity. What happens next depends on the rocket, the cause, and the mission’s constraints.
What “hold,” “recycle” and “scrub” mean
A hold pauses the countdown. Some holds are planned: NASA says they help target a precise launch window and leave time for countdown tasks without changing the overall schedule. If an unexpected issue arises, controllers may also hold while they assess it.

A hold can be followed by a resumed countdown or a recycle, in which the clock returns to an earlier point so teams can repeat required steps. If the issue cannot be cleared within the time and operating constraints available, managers may end the attempt. NASA’s Artemis countdown overview describes countdown and scrub rehearsal activities for the Space Launch System (SLS).

NASA’s historical Apollo mission rules used the term for terminating a launch for rescheduling, and described turnaround as the work involved in recycling and counting down toward a later liftoff. Those records help explain the terminology, but their procedures are not instructions for modern rockets. See the Apollo mission rules and Apollo launch operations manual.

Why a launch may be delayed or scrubbed
Weather outside safe limits
Weather can make conditions unsafe for a launch. NASA’s crew launch reference identifies storms, thick clouds and wind shear among the hazards teams assess. When conditions are outside the required limits, teams may wait for them to improve or stop the attempt. The applicable limits depend on the mission and vehicle. NASA explains these hazards in its crew launch weather reference.
Technical issues
A system or equipment issue can prompt a hold while engineers investigate. If it cannot be resolved and verified in time to meet the mission’s rules, the team may scrub rather than proceed. NASA’s SLS wet dress rehearsal coverage describes practicing countdown recycling and scrub procedures, including a tank-drain exercise.

Other mission constraints
Weather and technical problems are common examples, not an exhaustive list. Each mission has its own requirements and launch window, so other vehicle- or mission-specific constraints can also affect whether the countdown continues.
What the team does after a scrub
The response depends on what happened, when the countdown stopped, the vehicle’s design and the next available launch opportunity. Teams follow procedures to return the vehicle and ground systems to the required safe state, then determine what must be done before another attempt.

- Recycle the countdown: If the plan allows, controllers may reset to an earlier point and repeat steps.
- Service the vehicle: Depending on the rocket and timing, this may include draining propellant, inspecting systems, or carrying out other servicing.
- Repair or retest: An identified issue may need correction and verification before the vehicle is cleared to fly.
- Choose a new opportunity: The team must fit remaining work to a launch window that meets mission constraints.
NASA’s SLS rehearsal included draining tanks to practice scrub procedures; that does not mean every rocket is drained after every scrub. Propellants, vehicle configuration and the point at which the attempt ends all affect the required work. Historical Apollo turnaround records likewise describe processes and timings specific to those missions, not a standard schedule for rockets today.

There is no universal interval. A later attempt depends on the mission’s available launch windows, the cause of the scrub, and how much inspection, repair, retesting, servicing or countdown recycle is required.

For example, NASA reported that a June 2026 weather scrub of a mission to boost the Swift observatory was followed by a target of no earlier than Wednesday, July 1. That was a schedule for that mission, not a general turnaround rule. NASA’s mission update records the planned next opportunity.

A target time is not a guarantee of liftoff. Conditions and operational assessments continue to matter, and the schedule can change again. For the latest status, check the launch operator’s official mission page, blog or status feed rather than relying on an earlier target.
How to read a launch-status update
When an update says a launch is “delayed,” look for whether the countdown is still holding, has been recycled, or has been scrubbed. Then check what reason the operator gave, whether any vehicle work is required, and whether the new time is a firm attempt or a target such as “no earlier than.” Operators do not necessarily use identical terminology or procedures, so the mission’s own update is the best source for its status.
